An unusual 14ct yellow gold white metal tipped diamond and emerald ring, the eight claw set raised principal round brilliant cut stone approx 2cts, now set within a horseshoe of rose cut diamonds and emeralds with pierced frame, size J 1/2, approx 10g.Condition Report: The piece has clearly been made up, presumably from a brooch or stick pin, the central stone is drawing slightly in colour, and has several small flaws which are visible only with a naked eye, general surface wear throughout.

An 18ct yellow gold sapphire and diamond boat shaped ring centred with three sapphires within a framework of twenty-two diamonds, size S, approx 5g.N.B. Length of ring setting approx 23mm. Condition Report: The ring dates to the first half of the 20 th century. Sapphires are a good rich colour and the diamonds are well matched. Overall the ring is in very good condition.
An 18ct yellow gold and diamond flower head ring, the central raised round brilliant cut stone approx 1ct, within a border of eight further diamonds, each approx 0.15cts, size M 1/2, approx 5g.N.B. Ring head diameter approx 14mm. Condition Report: The diamonds are well matched and facing up nicely white. Inclusions visible with a loupe. Tips of a few claws are worn. 2 of the outer diamonds have tiny chips to the rim.

Robert William Piper was commissioned Ensign in the 46th Regiment of Foot on 28 May 1842, and was promoted Lieutenant by purchase on 11 July 1845, and Captain by purchase on 23 April 1852.

Penny, Surgeon) engraved naming, lacquered, nearly extremely fine £240-£280 --- Importation Duty This lot is subject to importation duty of 5% on the hammer price unless exported outside the UK --- --- Francis Penny, ‘formerly House Surgeon at the North Devon Infirmary, has received speedy promotion since he took the appointment of civil surgeon in the South African Field Force twelve months ago. In a letter to a friend at Barnstaple, Mr. Penny says: “I was coming home this month but have now been taken on as senior medical officer of Steinaeker’s Horse, so shall not be home for a year or so, as I hear it is to be a permanent corps, even after the War is over. I am to rig up in all the trappings and decorations of a captain in His Majesty’s Army, with the special tabs of the Medical Corps.” Captain Penny has latterly been stationed at Kaapsche Hoop (where, he says, he dug up enough gold to make a ring), but is now transferred to Komati Poort.’ (The North Devon Journal, 6 February 1902 refers).
