Lot 13
Emperor Napoleon I of France, an important lock of Napoleon's hair in circular gold locket, the roundel of hair on glass ground within gold floral chased frame, the reverse engraved 'Buonaparte's hair cut from his head by Col.Dodgin 66th Regt. 5th May AD 1821'. 2.5cm diameter with ring mount. Converted in the 19th century from a broochProvenance: Sold by these rooms to the vendor's father in August 1967 for £14. Sold with original press cutting of the sale which states it came from the estate of Colonel P.C. Rooke late of the 11th Batt. Royal Warwickshire Regiment who lived in Lexden Road, Colchester. Also sold with various research confirming that Lt.Colonel Dodgin had a fine record in the Peninsular War, had been awarded the C.B. and the Gold Medal for Victoria with clasps for Pyrenees and Orthes (where he was wounded). He is mentioned in "Events of a military life", by Walter Henry the Surgeon for the 66th Foot both in his recollections of the Peninsular War and at St. Helena which confirms that Dodgin was in St Helena at the time of Napoleon's imprisonment and death. Lt.Colonel Dodgin died in 1837. A fascinating and historical lot with wonderful provenance.
