Medieval Gold Seal Ring. Circa, 13th century AD. Gold, 3.9 grams. 21mm, bezel, 16mm. A circular band with large oval bezel set with an intaglio of dark green colouration-possibly chalcedony and likely to be of Roman date and depicting the god Mars walking left holding a spear and trophy. Engraved around the bezel is an inscription in Medieval Latin: (crescent) NVNCIE.VERA.TEGO. This is perhaps translatable as: I hide the true message, probably an allusion to the role of a seal matrix in securing correspondence and attributing it to the seal's owner. Provenance: found Coldharbour, Buckinghamshire, early 1980s. Processed under Treasure Trove-ref. 2019T655. Ring size: UK S.
