This precious gemstone, set against the backdrop of polished gold, creates a visual symphony that dances between the organic and the refined. Faustina Junior, the subject of the intaglio, was a prominent figure in Roman history. She was born Annia Galeria Faustina in the year 128 AD, and she held the title of Augusta as the wife of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Faustina Junior played an influential role as the Empress of Rome, and her image on the intaglio highlights her significance and power during the Roman Empire. The left-facing portrait of Faustina Junior depicted on the intaglio reflects the artistic style and attention to detail prevalent during the Roman period. The intaglio, meticulously carved into the garnet gemstone, captures the Empress's likeness, showcasing her facial features, hairstyle, and likely even her attire. Such intaglios were highly prized and served as both personal adornments and symbols of status and allegiance. Ca. 1st century AD.A gold finger ring of open type. The shank, a round testament to proportion, gently deviates from perfect circularity, affording it a subtle flattened quality that exudes modernity even within its classical frame. A symphony of details emerges as one's gaze traverses the ring's circumference. These serpentine visages, with recessed eyes that hint at enigmatic depths, are emblematic of the ancient Roman fascination with the mystical and the mythical. Size: D: 14.07mm / US: 2 7/8 / UK: F; 1.26g Provenance: Private London collection, pre-2000s.
