Lot 286

A silver and turquoise finger ring, 19th c, with contemporary handwritten label "King Coffey's ring taken off his finger by a solider [signed] H for VHC" Provenance: Presented to Sir Vauncey Harpur Crewe, 10th Baronet (1846-1924) of Calke Abbey, Derbyshire, by Hugo Harpur Crewe (1858-1905). Hugo Harpur Crewe clearly believed this curio would appeal to his elder brother as a relic of a famously exotic and generally considered notorious African leader, Asantehene Kofi Aariaari (c1837-c1884) 10th King of the Ashanti Empire. The present ring is undoubtedly of the period and although perhaps at first implausible on account of being made of silver rather than gold, and the lack of any corroborating evidence, there is no reason to doubt the provenance unless of course Hugo Harpur Crewe was himself duped
