A fine late 17th Century memento ‘Mori’ rock crystal slide, dated 28th December 1694, made in gold and set with a compartment of Queen Marys woven hair, overlaid with devices of the Royal Crown and two heavenly cherubs, enamelled around the edge of the slide in gilt lettering, ‘Memento Maria REGINA OBIT 22 Decembris 94’, the reverse of the brooch is engraved with the MR Royal cipherand simple verse, “Virtue and Goodness”, 1” x ¾” Notes: It is unusual to see such a Royal slide outside of the Royal family; the Victoria and Albert Museum commented the slide would probably have been given in January 1695 to members of the Royal Court or a Woman of the Bedchamber. The slide would have originally been worn on a silk ribbon, and it has been later adapted to a brooch. The quality of such a jewel would have been reserved for the very noblest of individuals. Queen Mary II in December 1694 succumbed to smallpox and died at the age of 32; four mournful trumpeters played a slow march leading her elaborate funeral possession to Westminster Abbey, following which the nation underwent a period of long and deep mourning. Her husband, King William III, was grief stricken and wrote at the time “From being the happiest of men I shall now be the most miserable creature on earth”.After his death, the King was found to have kept a lock of Mary’s hair, together with her wedding ring, next to his heart.
