A MEDIEVAL GOLD ICONOGRAPHIC FINGER RING OF ST GEORGE, 15TH TO EARLY 16TH CENTURY the octagonal bezel carrying a design of Saint George and the Dragon engraved in shallow relief. Saint George wears plate armour with different segments divided by incised lines and a helmet with an open visor showing his face. The conical top of the helmet maybe be his open visor. With his right hand he spears the mouth of the Dragon, the spear running diagonally from top left to bottom right of the bezel. In his left hand is a small triangular shield with a plain cross (cross of Saint George) on it. Behind his left shoulder is possibly a banner. The Dragon is lying on its back at the feet of Saint George with its tail running up the left edge of the bezel. There are small incised lines on the stomach of the Dragon and it is shown with open jaws and pointed teeth. There is a thin unrecessed border around the sides and the top of the bezel, broken by Saint George's helmet and at the bottom merging into the dragons back. The hoop tapers evenly in width from the shoulders to the narrowest point at the back. It is decorated all the way around the hoop with six diagonal lines of urecessed pellets in recessed lines. In the broad unrecessed bands are recessed foliage motifs of flowers on stems with several petals at the base interspersed with oval fruits or seeds. Adjacent to the bezel on these broad bands are recessed ray motifs with small pieces of white enamel surviving at two points. The inside of the hoop is plain and unmarked. Down one edge on each shoulder, where there is not the row of pellets from the diagonal line, an additional row of pellets has been stamped to make a border. The hoop is slightly damaged and bent out of shape. 21.1mm long, 17.4mm wide (squashed), and 14.9mm in internal diameter, 1.3mm thick at the bezel, weighs 3.5 grams gross. Treasure Act 1996: (SOM-21BA62) 2014 T556 Medieval iconography finger rings have often been reported through the Treasure process. In form and decoration on the hoop in this example is particularly similar to PAS-0FAF62 (2002 T33) of Saint Christopher, CAM-05A915 (2010 T831) of the Virgin and Child and NARC1177 or Saint Barbara all dated to the 15th to early 16th century. Depictions of Saint George seem rare, an example being illustrated in 'Finger Rings from Ancient to Modern' by Scarisbrick and Hening (2003, 43; no.3) and also dated to the 15th to early 16th century. This is also the high point of the cult of Saint George as England's patron saint in terms of pilgrim souvenirs, both in precious materials and lead alloy ('Medieval Finds from Excavations in London, 7: Pilgrim Souvenirs and Secular Badges' by B.Spencer, 1998, London HMSO). A precious metal example, as in this instance, indicates an owner of position, rank and wealth. Please note. If the purchaser of lot 14, the Medieval ring intends taking it out of the UK an export license is required. We would have to apply to the Arts Council of England on behalf of the purchaser for this. If it is deemed to be of cultural or national importance a license will not be granted. The outcome of the decision cannot be guaranteed or predicted.
