22 Kt. Gold, farbiges Maleremail. Konisch, auf leicht ausgezogener und zwölffach gefalteter unterer Wandung. Die Ansätze der Falten belegt mit reliefierten und naturalistisch emaillierten Zapfen (das Email etwas bestoßen). Unter dem Lippenrand drei große Reliefmaskarons: Ein Faunkopf im Profil nach rechts, mit Xylofon und Efeuranken, ein Frauenkopf (Bacchantin) mit wehendem Haar und Mistelzweig, ein Pantherkopf en face, umwunden von einer Banderole, oben Kastanien-, unten Weinblätter und eine Traubendolde. Die Köpfe verbunden mit einer breiten Banderole, in den Zwischenräumen drei Figurenfriese, äußerst fein in Email gemalte bacchantische Szenen. Auf dem Boden graviert "JULES BRATEAU" und "PAUL GRANDHOMME". Marken: Pariser Garantie für Werke mit Email seit 1838 (Tardy, S. 161) am oberen Rand, MZ für Jules Brateau auf dem Boden. H 11,3, D 9,3 cm, Gewicht 404 g.Paris, Goldschmied Jules-Paul Brateau, Emailleur Paul Grandhomme, 1893.Der Goldschmied Jules Brateau (1844 - 1923) und der Emailleur Paul-Victor Grandhomme (1851 - 1944) entwarfen diesen Becher für die Weltausstellung in Chicago 1893. Die World´s Columbian Exposition fand vom 1. Mai bis zum 30. Oktober statt und hatte als Thema das 400. Jubiläum der Entdeckung Amerikas durch Christoph Kolumbus. Frankreich war u.a. mit der berühmten Skulptur „Der Kuss“ (Le Baiser) von Auguste Rodin vertreten - einer Darstellung, die wegen ihres intimen Charakters nur von Männern und hinter einem Vorhang besichtigt werden durfte. Der prachtvolle, aus purem Gold bestehende Art Nouveau-Becher sorgte gleichfalls für die öffentliche Aufmerksamkeit. Die beiden Designer und Handwerker Brateau und Grandhomme schufen einige äußerst preziöse Objekte als gemeinsame Auftragsarbeiten. Das Musée des Arts Décoratifs besitzt z.B. den fantastischen kleinen, mit Goldbelägen und farbigen Emailplatten bestückten Elfenbeinkoffer (Inv.Nr. 17461), der für Georges Berger hergestellt wurde, der von 1891 bis 1910 Präsident der Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs war. Für den Salon de la Société nationale des beaux-arts in Paris 1897 konnte er sich kurzfristig von dem schönen Stück wieder trennen, bis es dann 1910 dem Pariser Museum vermacht wurde. Das Musée des Arts Décoratifs besitzt ein weiteres, besonders emotionales Objekt des Goldschmieds Jules Brateau, nämlich den bedeutenden Ring „Le Calvaire“ aus Gold, Kupfer und einem in Herzform geschnittenen Rubin (Inv.Nr. 2002.173.6). Brateau widmete ihn dem Andenken seines zwanzigjährigen Sohnes, der am 22. August 1914 als eines der ersten Opfer auf dem Schlachtfeld des Ersten Weltkriegs gefallen war. Der Ring war ihm so wichtig, dass er Kardinal Amette vorschlug, ihn bei der Weihe der Basilika Sacré-CÅ“ur zu tragen, was dieser aber nicht tat.Jules Brateau war auch Zinngießer und wurde von seinen Zeitgenossen als der Meister gefeiert, der der Zinnkunst in Frankreich neue Impulse gegeben hatte. Auf der Pariser Weltausstellung 1889 gewann die bedeutende Kanne „Les Arts“ und das dazu gehörige Becken eine Goldmedaille (heute MAD, Inv.Nr. 5829a,b). Die französische Renaissance inspirierte ihn zu dem Modell. Auf dem Korpus der Kanne ist Pallas Athene von Poesie und Wissenschaft umgeben, unter der Tülle hält Inspiration eine Urne, aus der die ewige Quelle der Schönheit sprudelt, die Figur am Henkel stellt die Wahrheit dar. In der Mitte des Tabletts hält der Ruhm einen Palmzweig und eine Trompete. Vier weibliche Figuren symbolisieren die wichtigsten Künste: Malerei, Bildhauerei, Architektur und Musik.Die Pariser Museen besitzen zudem einige sensationelle Emailarbeiten von Paul-Victor Grandhomme. Im MAD befinden sich ein Armband, eine Brosche und eine Uhrkette im Stil der Renaissance, von 1878 - 1883 (Inv.Nr. 14851) nach einem Entwurf von Alphonse Fouquet und plastischen Elementen von Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse.
