It was destined to reward Indian Princes and Chiefs as well as British Officers and Civil Administrative who saw their service in India and were signaled for their conspicuous merits. Diplomatically, the first award was done to the heads of the Indian Maharajas and Princes and to the highest British authorities in India.After 1948, no further award was granted. An Order’s miniature jewel in GOLD, enamels, painting and brilliants; suspension ring made ofgold wire of square section.An exceptional and very rare piece of the best quality and exact details of the end of the18th Century, most possibly a work of a jeweller working on behalf of the Danish court.This one-class order, worn as a collar on ceremonial occasions, or wearing the badge suspendedto a pale blue sash and a breast star, is Denmark’s highest chivalric distinction; its history dates back to1464, thus being one of the most ancient and prestigious orders of Europe. In its evolution it was andstill is awarded to foreign sovereigns and heads of states only, and to Danes with exceptionalmerits to the throne. At the death of a Knight, wherever he lived, the decoration of the Elephant isbeing recovered by emissaries of the Order’s Chapter.Provenance: Maréchal Louis Nicolas Davout, Division General, Duc d’Auerstadt, Princed’Eckmühl, 1770-1823. Gold Cross, 1st model, civil, Pattern, in copper gilt, 30 mm, original suspension ring and loop. The order was instituted on July 31st, 1930 by Carol II, in fourclasses, Commander, Officer, Knight and Golden Cross, and awarded to the civilian and military air personnel, in times of peace and in war. The decorationis a cross with a longer vertical arm, in the same design as the Michael the Brave Order and a horizontal arm designed as a stylized wing. The central shieldhas the Romanian eagle on white enamel and the king`s cipher in the middle on blue enamel. The green enameled laurel wreath between the arms of thecross is present only by the first two classes. On the reverse side the year of the introduction “Virtutea Aeronautica”. Of the highest rarity and historical importance, in extremely fine condition! I RR!
