A pair of Flight and Barr Worcester jardinières, circa 1800Of tapering cylindrical form, finely painted with panels of shells and colourful seaweed arranged on a stone shelf, possibly by Samuel Smith, reserved on an orange ground with fine neoclassical gilding, a wide band of triangular 'Greek key' gilding below the rims, the moulded ring handles also picked out in gold, 15.8cm high, incised B mark (2)Footnotes:ProvenanceWith Otto M Wasserman, 1969With Earle D Vandekar of Knightsbridge, Inc.Twinight CollectionIllustrated by Henry Sandon, Flight and Barr Worcester Porcelain (1978), p.62, pl.47.The shell painting and the arrangement of the fine filaments of the seaweed is very similar to that on the documentary shell-painted jug by Samuel Smith, signed and dated 'S.S. 1807' and sold by Phillips, 16 December 1998, lot 360. See John Sandon, The Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain (1993), colour plate 77. It is most useful to compare these jardinières with the cabinet cup sold by Bonhams on 17 May 2017, lot 371. Not only is the purple shell almost identical to that on the present lot but the thick seaweed with dabs of white enamel to create surface texture is a distinctive and effective trait in each case. Both lots exhibit similar neoclassical 'Greek key' gilding at the rims.A single jardinière of this form, painted with a monochrome view of Worcester from The Barbara Cavenagh Collection was sold by Bonhams on 13 December 2006, lot 248.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
