A 19th Century Indian gold and chalcedony signet ring of military interest. The rectangular ring with foliate engraved underbezel and shank with bifurcated scroll shoulders. With a letter from the British museum dated May 1968. This ring is inscribed in Persian to Major-General Dugald `Bahadur` Campbell. (The term `Bahadur` - Military Commander, being a title of honour issued to individuals in India who have performed a deed of great service to the Nation.) The dating of the ring to 1803 is significant, coinciding with a critical year in Anglo-Indian military history. The campaign of that year against the Marathas culminating in Wellesley`s famous victory at the Battle of Assaye. Records of the Indian Office from this time noted `The success of Major General Campbell in quelling the Disturbances in the ceded districts of Kurnool, Cuddapah, Bellary, and Anantpur, subsequent distribution of his forces into temporary Cantonments.` For this he is known to have been officially commended, and this presentation ring very probably relates to that event. Size Y, 2.3 x 2cm.
