A mid Victorian gold and glass hinged locket, circa 1860, the domed glass covers in a hinged gold mount, the outside of the mount engraved `Fanny Sebastopol`, with a plain ring bale, 3.7cm diameter. Interestingly, Frances Isabella Duberly (1829 -1903), known as Fanny Duberly was married to Captain Henry Duberly, the paymaster of the 8th Royal Irish Hussars. She travelled with her husband in the Crimea from 1854 onwards during his tour of duty there. Frances Duberly was the only woman close to the front line, and witnessed the Battle of Balaclava at first hand. Frances Duberly recounted and published her memoirs from the Crimean War in her journal `Journal Kept During the Russian War`. Although she was rebuffed by the Establishment, Francis Duberly was popular with the troops on the frontline, as well as with the public at large. Her published journal sold well, as did a print of a photograph by Roger Fenton. Frances recalled the photograph in a letter to her sister Selina in 1885: `I send you a photograph of Bobs. In his picture he has only 3 legs - which is a libel on the old ruffian, for he has four, but he was taken unbeknown, and we were none of us prepared. I was obliged to be taken on his back, to hide the mange spots about the saddle with my habit skirt. There have been an incredible number of copies struck off and sold, as I hear, at least every man I meet seems to have one, and Fenton would not charge us anything for it, I being the only lady.`
