Original vintage movie advertising poster of a double feature with the films The Idol, 1966 and The Skull, 1965. The Idol is a British drama film directed by Daniel Petrie and starring Jennifer Jones, Michael Parks, Jennifer Hilary and Guy Doleman. Set during the Swinging Sixties in London, the plot entails a rebellious student who disrupts the lives of all around him, leading to disastrous consequences. The Idol's poster art work is by famous cinema poster Tom Chantrell (1916-2001), whose notable work include artwork for Brighton Rock (1947), The Sound of Music (1965), Far From The Madding Crowd (1967) and Star Wars (1977). The Skull is a British horror film directed by Freddie Francis for Amicus Productions, and starring the frequently paired horror actors Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, alongside Patrick Wymark, Jill Bennett, Nigel Green, Patrick Magee and Peter Woodthorpe. It was one of a number of British horror films of the sixties to be scored by avant-garde composer Elisabeth Lutyens, including several others for Amicus. The script was written by Milton Subotsky, from a short story by Robert Bloch, "The Skull of the Marquis de Sade". This poster is silk screen printed in heavy luminiscent yellow and green. It features the Odenplatz in the distance, a large square in central Munich which was developed in the 19th century by Leo von Klenze and is at the Southern end of Ludwigstrasse. Two important buildings, the Feldherrnhalle and the Theatinerkirche can be seen. Munich is the capital and most populous city of Bavaria, the second most populous German federal state. This poster published to promote the football Olympic Tournament, features a design by renowned American graphic designer Lance Wyman, showing two stylised football players competiting for the ball against a green background, with the famous Mexico 68 design displayed across the top of the image. The 1968 Summer Olympics (Spanish: Juegos Olímpicos de Verano de 1968), officially known as the Games of the XIX Olympiad, were held in Mexico City, Mexico, from October 12th to the 27th. These were the first Olympic Games to be staged in Latin America and the first to be staged in a Spanish-speaking country. The 1968 Games were the third to be held in the last quarter of the year, after the 1956 Games in Melbourne and the 1964 Games in Tokyo. Lance Wyman (born in 1937) is known for his work under Pedro Ramirez Vazquez, design concept and direction, in developing applications of the Mexico 68 logo in Ramirez Vazquez's personal office in Mexico City. Original vintage travel advertising poster for Lindau island in Bavaria, Germany. Lindau is a major town and island on the eastern side of Lake Constance (Bodensee in German). It is the capital of the county (Landkreis) of Lindau, Bavaria and is near the borders of the Austrian state of Vorarlberg and the Swiss cantons of St. Gallen and Thurgau. The coat of arms of Lindau town is a linden tree, referring to the supposed origin of the town's name (Linde means linden tree in German). The slogan below reads "Die Ferieninsel Im Bodensee", translated as "The Holiday Island in Lake Constance". The poster features two anthropomorphic birds, one of which is wearing a bow tie and tuxedo, holding a cane, and both wearing hats. Don't be deceived by the Tory attempt to use Lord Roberts for party purposes. From the "Westminster Gazette." Fun image of a political satirical cartoon featuring British Victorian era general Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts (1832-1914), affectionately known to his troops and the wider British public as "Bobs" and Robert Gascoyne-Cecil (1830-1903), 3rd Marquess of Salisbury, a member of the Conservative Party and three times prime minister of the United Kingdom. The illustration is by Francis Carruthers Gould, a British caricaturist and political cartoonist, from the Westminster Gazette, an influential Liberal newspaper based in London. The poster features a cartoon of Tory members, led by Lord Robert Cecil, crouching and hiding behind "Bobs", who is dressed in a military uniform and waving a flag which says 'khaki'. In Westminster systems of government, a khaki election is any national election which is heavily influenced by wartime or postwar sentiment. He studied in Paris, at the École des Beaux-Arts, and was much influenced by his friendship with Maurice Denis. He worked principally as a painter, adopting the saturated colors of Henri Matisse in landscapes and figure studies often based on observation of “exotic” cultures, notably Mediterranean and North African. The poster promotes air travel to the Mediterranean, and features a barracuda looking fish and two butterflies against a flat, collage like background of blues and reds. Original vintage World War Two poster by the notable British cartoonist and illustrator Fougasse (Cyril Kenneth Bird; 1887-1965) from the popular Careless Talk Costs Lives wartime propaganda series issued by the Ministry of Information - "Be careful what you say and where you say it!" Image of two men talking at the bar in a pub with Hitler's face on the beer taps and bottles and on the beer froth. Cyril Kenneth Bird CBE (17 December 1887 – 11 June 1965), known by the pen name Fougasse, was a British cartoonist best known for his work in Punch magazine (of which he served as editor from 1949 to 1953) and his World War II warning propaganda posters. He also designed many posters for the London Underground. Bird was born in London on 17 December 1887, the son of Arthur Bird, a company director. He was educated at Cheltenham College and King's College London (B.Sc). While at King's College he attended evening art classes at the Regent Street Polytechnic and at the School of Photo-Engraving in Bolt Court. He was seriously injured at the Battle of Gallipoli during World War I and invalided out of the British Army. Bird first contributed to Punch in 1916, while convalescing, and also contributed to several other British newspapers and magazines, including the Graphic and Tatler. His pen name was based on the fougasse, a type of mine. As one of the best known cartoonists of the time, he was one of 170 authors who created doll-sized books exclusively for Queen Mary's Dolls' House; his illustrated verse tale, written on postage stamp-sized pages, was published as a regular-sized hardback in 2012 by the Royal Collection and Walker Books. In the course of the 1920s and 1930s, his drawings evolved from the traditionally representational to an innovative, spare, style that was both unique and popular, featuring in many advertising campaigns as well as in magazine editorial. He became art editor of Punch from 1937 to 1949, then editor until 1953. He was the only cartoonist ever to edit the magazine. During World War II, he worked unpaid for the Ministry of Information, designing humorous but effective propaganda posters including the famous "Careless Talk Costs Lives" series. For this work he was awarded the honour of Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1946. He illustrated and co-wrote several humorous books with W. D. H. McCullough. These included the very successful Aces Made Easy – or Pons asinorum in a nutshell, on the subject of contract bridge, in 1934, and You Have Been Warned – A Complete Guide to the Road, in 1935. In the mid 1950s, he taught at the Christian Science Sunday School in the Sloane Square church, which has since been converted into the Cadogan Hall concert hall. He died in London, aged 77. Since 2009 his cartoon of a butler carrying a tray has been used to illustrate the front page of British Airways' First Class menus, continuing an association with the airline which goes back to the 1930s when Fougasse penned advertising posters for BA's forerunner, Imperial Airways. Original vintage movie advertising poster for Buck Rogers In the 25th Century, a 1979 American science fiction film directed by Daniel Haller. Starring Gil Gerard in the title role and Erin Gray as Colonel Wilma Deering, it was produced by Glen A. Larson who co-wrote the screenplay with Leslie Stevens, based on the character Buck Rogers which was created by Philip Francis Nowlan in 1928. Originally made as a television movie pilot, Universal Studios opted to release the film theatrically several months before the subsequent television series aired. The realist style artwork is by American artist Victor Gadino. His work has appeared in the promotion of the top clients of the corporate, publishing, and entertainment worlds, and awards received include one from The Hollywood Reporter for his work on prominent movie posters. He has created album covers for various artists, posters for Broadway plays, and collectibles for the Bradford Exchange, and Franklyn Mint. Reminiscent of the Star Wars poster, the graphic sci-fi graphic features Gil Gerard as Captain "William" Buck Rogers holding a laser gun alongside Colonel Wilma Deering. They are surrounded by other characters, a golden humanoid robot and a space craft in the distance, under an exploding star in the galaxy. Original vintage propaganda poster of Mao Zedong, featuring an iconic photograph of the chairman at Yan'an. The Yan'an Rectification Movement was the first ideological mass movement initiated by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), going from 1942 to 1944. The movement took place at the communist base at Yan'an, a remote and isolated mountainous area in northern Shaanxi, after the communists' Long March. Mao was a Chinese communist revolutionary who became the founding father of the People's Republic of China (PRC), which he ruled as the chairman of the Communist Party of China from its establishment in 1949 until his death in 1976. Hand coloured from the original black and white photograph, this poster was published by Sinhua agency, Shanghai. The caption below reads 'Long live our great leader Chairman Mao!' The image features Mao Zedong, giving a speech and counting, wearing a blue suit, and set at the bottom of a canyon. His shadow meets with a stool on which there is an olive coloured cup. Original vintage movie poster for the first UK release of the American drama film Rebel Without a Cause directed by Nicholas Ray and starring James Dean ('...the bad boy from a good family'), Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo. Colourful poster featuring three black and white photographs of James Dean, set against a bright yellow and red background with the title printed in stylised red, black and yellow letters and the tagline reading: Warner Bros' challenging drama of today's teenage violence! Filmed in the then recently introduced CinemaScope format, the film was a groundbreaking attempt to portray the moral decay of American youth, critique parental style, and explore the differences and conflicts between generations. Over the years, the film has achieved landmark status for the acting of cultural icon Dean, fresh from his Oscar nominated role in East of Eden and who died in a car accident, one motnh before the film's release, in his most celebrated role. The Eifel race has a firm place in the calendar of the Nürburgring to this day – until 1974, motorcycles as well as automobiles took part, since then, “only” four-wheelers compete. Original vintage circus advertising poster for the Ringling Circus and Barnum & Bailey, an American traveling circus company billed as The Greatest Show on Earth that ran from 1817-2017. Known as Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Combined Shows, the circus started in 1919 when the Barnum & Bailey's Greatest Show on Earth, a circus created by P. T. Barnum and James Anthony Bailey, was merged with the Ringling Bros. World's Greatest Shows. The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus pushed through many hardships, including the Great Depression, World War II, and the devastating Hartford Circus Fire. With weakening attendance, many animal rights protests, and high operating costs, the circus performed its final show on May 21, 2017, at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum and closed after 146 years. The poster artwork features a hippopotamus in a river, with its mouth stretched wide open. Set against a strong yellow background, bold navy blue text and a globe in at the bottom right corner. It features an artwork by American feminist artis and political activist May Stevens (1924 – 2019) showing one of her recurrent Big Daddy figure drapped into the US flag with a pitbull on his laps and set against a blue background. GEDOK was founded in Hamburg in 1926 by the patron Ida Dehmel (1870-1942) as the “Association of German and Austrian Artists' Associations of All Art Genres”. As a painter, Duval exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in Paris in 1904, the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon des artistes français, and the Salon d'hiver. The Royal Chateau de Blois served as the residence of several French kings, and is also the place where Joan of Arc went in 1429 to be blessed by the Archbishop of Reims before departing with her army to drive the English from Orleans. The film was produced by Darryl F. Zanuck, and features a large international ensemble cast including John Wayne, Kenneth More, Richard Todd, Robert Mitchum, Richard Burton, Steve Forrest, Sean Connery, Henry Fonda, Red Buttons, Peter Lawford, Eddie Albert, Jeffrey Hunter, Stuart Whitman, Tom Tryon, Rod Steiger, Leo Genn, Gert Fröbe, Irina Demick, Bourvil, Curd Jürgens, George Segal, Robert Wagner, Paul Anka, and Arletty. Original vintage advertising poster for a travelling exhibition of Sickert's etchings, organised by the Victoria and Albert Museum's Circulation Department. Until its closure in 1977, the Circulation Department was responsible for loan shows that travelled to two categories of venue – to regional museums, art galleries and public libraries, and to art schools and education colleges; thus disseminating art and design across the UK. At the time, it could be considered the oldest such institution for the preparation of travelling exhibitions of museum material in the world, originating as part of the Design Reform initiative centred on the Government Schools of Design at Marlborough House. The poster features a portrait of Helen Couper-Black, the manager of the D'Oyly Carte Theatre Company, secretary and subsequently second wife to Richard D'Oyly Carte. After Carte's death in 1901 she became the manager of the Savoy theatre where she retained the role until 1909. Walter Sickert, the notable British painter and printmaker submitted an impression of this work as his Diploma print upon his election as Fellow to the Society of Painters-Etchers on 30 March 1887. Original vintage map of the county of Manchester (1610) by John Speed (1552-1629), an English cartographer and historian. Printed in 1976 by the local council most likely to promote tourism. Inscription at the bottom right states that the map was adapted by the Greater Manchester Council Public Relations Office and Cartographic Service. Alongside Christopher Saxton, Speed is one of the best known English mapmakers of the early modern period. His atlas The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine was published in 1611 and 1612, and contained the first set of individual county maps of England and Wales besides maps of Ireland and a general map of Scotland. In July 1915 the PRC became the Parliamentary War Savings Committee and began to publish posters like this one, aimed at civilians, to encourage donations to the war effort. Original vintage advertising poster of the Swiss national exposition of 1964 (French: Exposition nationale suisse de 1964), usually shortened to Expo 64, was a world's fair held in Lausanne, more specifically in Vidy and the neighbouring Vallée de la Jeunesse, between 30 April and 25 October 1964. The slogan at the top reads "Agir en faveur d'une solidarité mondiale", which translates as "Acting for global solidarity." The artwork is a painting by Swiss painter Hans Falk (1918-2002), who lived in New York City, Ireland, England, Switzerland and Stromboli, Italy. Hans Falk was one of the most important modern Swiss painters. This modernist painting features bold, red and expressive brushstrokes. Original vintage travel advertising poster for Lahti, a city and municipality situated on a bay at the southern end of lake Vesijärvi about 100 kilometres (60 mi) north-east of the capital Helsinki, and considered the 'sports capital' of Finland. The name Lahti translates to 'bay' in English. The poster was designed by Finnish graphic designer Martti Mykkänen (1926-2008) and printed by Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Kirjapaino Oy. Maykkanen won the first prize in the competition “Best Book Cover of the Year” for the Finnish cover of Leonid Andrejev’s book The Tale of Seven Hanged Men. Roughly estimated Mykkänen has created 450 book covers for almost all the publishing houses in Finland. He also created corporate logos, for example the T-logo for the publishing house Tammi and the three flashes of lightning still used today by Helsinki Energy. He was also the art director for the magazine Look at Finland, published by the Finnish Tourist Board. The poster features a drawing of balloons, singing bird, boy with a red cap, modern architecture and busy street, against a cerulean blue background.
