Sierra Maestra, [June 1962], vintage gelatin silver print, photographer’s studio stamp to image lower right, corner-mounted in card mat mount, titled and signed in by Korda to lower mount, image size 14 x 11 ins (355 x 280mm) Alberto Korda, p. 79. An iconic image and one of Castro’s favourite images of himself and one which he is seen admiring and reminiscing about alongside Korda and other Cuban revolution photographers in the documentary film KordaVision (2005, dir. Hector Cruz Sandoval). ‘In 1959 I was 31 years old and hungry as a wolf for images for my camera. Fidel asked me to join his staff which I did, giving my support by choosing the right moment (a moment suggested by Fidel prophecies) to make the photographs. We were not aware of what we are doing. Corrales and I both worshipped Fidel and Che, our idealism for a new Havana’, (Cuba Si!, p. 28).. (1).

Che Guevara, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, Havana, [February 1960], vintage gelatin silver print, numbered ‘0002/50’, signed and dated [19]98 by the photographer in ink to lower margin left and right, corner creases away from image, image size 7.5 x 11.25 ins (19 x 28.5cm), together with Che ministro (Che addresses the ministry of Industries), Havana, [June 1961], vintage gelatin silver print, photographer’s signatures in purple ink to margin lower right, 9 x 13.25 ins (22.5 x 33.5cm) For negative strip and images from the first occasion see Alberto Korda, pp. 178-80, Cuba by Korda, p. 84 and Cuba Si! p. 34. “While we were travelling by car, Sartre asked Fidel: ‘Fidel, if the people asked you to do the impossible, what will you do?’, Fidel replied: ‘If they ask me, then I’d have to do it.’ That night, near midnight, Che welcomed the two intellectuals to his office in the Ministry of Industry - he worked so much that he often received visitors as late as 4 in the morning. The interview was in French. When they left his office, the duty Sentry was asleep, his cap over his face. Sartre commented to Beauvoir that with the long hair tied back in a ponytail he couldn’t tell if it belonged to a man or a woman “. (Cuba by Korda, p. 84). (2).

Juego de Golf (Game of Golf), Club de Golf de la Habana, [March 1961], a group of four vintage gelatin silver prints, one showing Fidel putting watched on by a group including Che crouching, 9.5 x 13.25 ins (24 x 33.5cm), ink signatures to lower margin right, Che full length leaning on a golf club and smiling, photographer’s blind stamp to image lower left and ink signatures lower right, 13.25 x 9.5 ins (33.5 x 24cm), plus Fidel driving and putting, both with photographer’s blind stamp to lower margin left and ‘Alberto Korda’ wet stamp to verso, images sizes 10 x 9 ins (25.5 x 22cm) These images and the negative strips from the occasion are reproduced variously in all three books cited. “‘Chico, with your cameras around your neck you look like a Yankee!’ Che joked when I started to photograph him playing golf. ‘Do you realise how much we cost the Country for all the films spilling out of your pockets?’ I didn’t reply, but thought to myself: ‘What’s the problem? I paid for all the film myself!’ It was only much later that I understood, when the blockade of Cuba began” (Cuba by Korda, p. 94). (4).
