Queen Victoria (1819-1901). A pair of Queen Victoria's stockings in cream silk, made in 1850. The stockings are embroidered 'V.R.10' (Victoria Regina) on the welt; they have a ribbon crochet design on the foot and up to the shin. Together with a fine cotton vintage lawn hanky with blue embroidery, photographs of actress Renee Kelly (one showing her wearing the stockings), a letter of thanks addressed to Mrs Garner, a receipt from the Lord Mayor's secretary, and a newspaper clipping relating to the sale of the stockings at auctionProvenance: from an anonymous donor who initially sent the stockings to Renee Kelly, an actress who appeared in a matinee and wore the stockings at the Garrick Theatre, London. After the performance, there was an auction on behalf of the Lord Mayor Treloar, Cripples Fund Hospital and College; many of Queen Victoria's items were sold, and the stockings were purchased by a Mrs Garner who paid 10 Guineas and 24 shillings for them on 17 February 1930
