Hine, Lewis W. -- People of the Balkans. Circa 1919. 7 vintage gelatin silver prints. Each circa 16 x 12 cm. Each flush-mounted to board, annotated in pencil on mount verso. After WWI as of mid-1915 the American Red Cross had started providing aid for the Balkan countries. In Belgrade there was a large central warehouse for food, medicine and clothes. In 1919, the organization sent the American photographer Lewis Hine, who a decade earlier had created a moving series on child labor in the U.S., to make an extraordinary record of life in the Balkans during some of its darkest moments. Hine took photos in Albania, Romania, Serbia and Bulgaria and was the only Red Cross photographer working in the Balkans at the time. The pictures, with their original captions, offer insight into the various people of the Balkans, as well as the sometimes patronizing perspective of a Western observer of the time. Hine’s survey is ethnographic in nature, like the colonial photo essays of National Geographic at the time. – Corners slightly bumped, some with silver mirroring, a few spots, otherwise in good condition.Lit.: Daile Kaplan.
