WEST MAE: (1893-1980) American Actress & Sex Symbol. An excellent, unusual vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of West in a glamorous head and shoulders pose. Signed in bold black fountain pen ink across a light area of the image, `For the Marius Risley Collection-Webster International Dictionary: Mae West, (after American actress) a life-saving jacket worn by flyers...Mae West` and dated 28th September 1954 in her hand. A small authentication sticker is affixed in the lowetr right corner. Rare in this form. A couple of very light, minor corner creases, otherwise VG The Mae West was a common nickname for the first inflatable life preserver. The nickname was originated because someone wearing the inflated life preserver often appeared to be as physically endowed as the actress Mae West as well as rhyming slang for breast. It was popular during World War II with American Army Air Forces and Royal Air Force servicemen, who were issued inflatable Mae Wests as part of their flight gear. Air crew members whose lives were saved by use of the Mae West (and other personal flotation devices) were eligible for membership in the Goldfish Club.

The photograph dates from the time of Monroe`s appearance in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953). Signed in bold blue ink across a light area of the image, `Jack-You certainly can-and I`m not mad! Marilyn`. An intriguing inscription, apparently to the choreographer Jack Cole. Signed photographs of this size and quality are rarely encountered. Some very light, extremely minor age wear to the extreme edges, VG Jack Cole (1911-1974) American Dancer and Choreographer, famous for his work in Hollywood with Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell and Rita Hayworth among others. He worked on several of Monroe`s movies including Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953). Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) is a film adaptation of the musical and starred Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell. Monroe appeared in the role of the gold-digging Lorelei Lee and her rendition of the song Diamonds Are a Girl`s Best Friend is considered an iconic performance of the silver screen.

A vintage 8vo printed programme for Nat King Cole`s appearance in The Big Show as part of his Australian Tour of January 1955, signed by Cole to an inside photo page of the musician in a smiling half length pose. Cole has signed his name alone in bold pencil to a light area of the background. Together with a vintage signed 4.5 x 6 photograph by The Platters individually, Herb Reed, Tony Williams, Paul Robi, David Lynch and Zola Taylor. The image depicts the band in a head and shoulders group pose. Signed by each to clear areas of the image, Reed and Taylor with their full signatures and the others with first names only.
