OLIVER!: Small selection of signed pieces and cards etc., by the main cast members and writer, composer and lyricist of the British musical drama film Oliver! (1968) comprising Mark Lester (Oliver), Ron Moody (Fagin), Jack Wild (Artful Dodger) and Lionel Bart (writer, composer & lyricist; vintage signed and inscribed postcard photograph of Bart in a profile head and shoulders pose). Each of the signatures and photograph are matted together in pink and pale blue alongside a promotional image for the film and the verso of the matt features an unsigned colour image of Lester, Moody and Wild in costume together. Framed and glazed in a plain silver metallic frame to an overall size of 11 x 13.5. VGOliver! premiered on the London stage in 1960, where it enjoyed a long run, followed by successful long runs on Broadway, as well as tours and revivals. It was made into a musical film in 1968, winning six Academy Awards including the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director.

ANNIE GET YOUR GUN: Small selection of signed pieces, photograph and programme by the composer and lyricist and various actresses associated with the American musical Annie Get Your Gun comprising Irving Berlin (Composer & Lyricist), Ethel Merman (Annie Oakley; signed front cover of a Playbill programme for Annie Get Your Gun at the Imperial Theatre), Betty Hutton (Annie Oakley; colour photograph) and Dolores Gray (Annie Oakley; vintage black fountain pen ink signature, also adding Annie in her hand beneath her signature). Each of the autographs are matted alongside each other in black and red alongside a promotional image and United States flag and with small gold star stickers neatly affixed to the matt. Framed and glazed in a wooden frame to an overall size of 14 x 17. Together with a signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph by Jerry Herman (1931- , American Composer & Lyricist) depicting him in a head and shoulders pose. Signed in bold black ink to a clear area at the base of the image. Matted in red and lilac above three small promotional images for various musicals including Mame and Hello Dolly, accompanied by a black ink signature of Carol Channing on a white card and a signed printed 4to page from a programme for Mame by Angela Lansbury, matted together in yellow and red to the verso. WALLER FATS: (1904-1943) American Jazz Pianist. Vintage signed postcard photograph depicting Waller seated in a full length pose at his piano. Signed, with his scarcer full signature, 'Best Wishes Thomas “Fats” Waller', in bold green fountain pen ink to a clear area of the image. Some slight surface and corner creasing, otherwise about VG Provenance: The present signed photograph was obtained by a relation of the vendor when they were invited back stage to meet Waller following a performance at the Grand Theatre at Clapham Junction. A later newspaper article relating to, and illustrating, the present signed photograph published by the Dorset Evening Echo on 18th October 1988 is included in the lot.
ARMSTRONG LOUIS: (1901-1971) American Jazz Trumpeter. Vintage signed and inscribed 10 x 8 photograph depicting Armstrong in a head and shoulders pose playing his trumpet. The promotional image is signed in bold green fountain pen ink by Armstrong with both forms of his signature ('Louis Armstrong' and 'Satchmo') to clear areas of the image. Some surface and corner creasing, none of which significantly detracts from the overall appearance of the photograph, about VG
BREL JACQUES: (1929-1978) Belgian Singer. Vintage signed colour 6 x 8 postcard photograph of Brel in a head and shoulders pose. Photograph by Sam Levin. Signed ('J. Brel') in bold black ink with his name alone to a clear area of the background. Some slight creasing and small pinholes and minor tape stains to the corners. Together with two unsigned vintage French publications relating to Brel, one being a programme for a performance by the singer at Bruno Coquatrix's L'Olympia in 1966. Some slight age wear. HUMPERDINCK ENGELBERT: (1854 - 1921) German Composer. An excellent, vintage colour picture postcard, depicting Hansel and Gretel at the confectionary house, the witch at the door. Signed ('EH') in black fountain pen ink to a clear area at the foot of the picture. To the left his signature, Humperdinck has added an autograph musical quotation of two bars from his composition 'Hansel and Gretel', together with a short inscription. An annotation in French is written to clear area that borders the image, in the hand of another. To the verso, the same hand has addressed the card to 'Mademoiselle L. Breval'. With an unfranked postage stamp. VGLucienne Breval (1869-1935) Swiss Opera Singer. Breval spent most of her career performing with the Opéra National de Paris where she became a greatly admired interpreter of French grand opera roles and Wagner heroines.
SOUSA JOHN PHILIP: (1854-1932) American Composer. An excellent vintage black and white picture postcard depicting 'Blue Room, White House, Washington, D.C.'. Signed ('John Philip Sousa') to a clear area of the picture. Above his signature, Sousa has added an autograph musical quotation of four bars from his composition 'The Washington Post'. The composer has added the date, 1912, in his hand. To the verso, in Sousa's hand is written, 'John Philip Sousa, 'The March King', New York, Dec. 27. 1912'. Postally unused, but addressed in Sousa's hand to his correspondent. EXThe Washington Post is a march composed by Sousa in 1889.
SINATRA FRANK: (1915-1998) American Singer & Actor, Academy Award winner. Vintage blue ink signature and inscription ('Hi Reg - Frank Sinatra') on a page removed from an autograph album, matted in two shades of blue beneath a photograph of Sinatra seated in his car and framed and glazed in a plain metallic frame to an overall size of 13 x 11. VG
PAVLOVA ANNA: (1881-1931) Russian Prima Ballerina. Vintage signed postcard photograph, an elegant image of Pavlova standing en pointe in a full length pose in costume from The Dying Swan. Signed with her name alone in fountain pen ink across a largely clear area at the centre of the image. Some slight silvering to the corners of the image and with a few very minor traces of former mounting to the verso. About VGPavlova is most famous for having created the role of The Dying Swan, a solo choreographed by Mikhail Fokine in 1905 to Camille Saint-Saen's Le Cygne from Le Carnaval des animaux. The ballerina performed the four-minute piece around 4,000 times.
MILLER GLENN: (1904-1944) American Big Band Musician of World War II. Bold vintage fountain pen ink signature ('Glenn Miller') on a small, slightly irregularly clipped 12mo feint lined piece, neatly laid down to an attractive card bearing printed musical notes and two gold stars. Matted in two shades of brown beneath a photograph of Miller with his trombone and framed and glazed in a plain gold coloured metallic frame to an overall size of 10 x 14. About VG
ARMSTRONG LOUIS: (1901-1971) American Jazz Trumpeter. Bold vintage fountain pen ink signature ('Louis Armstrong') on a portion of a page removed from an autograph album, very slightly irregularly trimmed to the left edge. Mounted alongside a small white card bearing printed musical notes and a gold star and matted in two shades of brown beneath a photograph of Armstrong playing his trumpet and framed and glazed in a plain gold coloured metallic frame to an overall size of 9.5 x 14. About VG
FOUGASSE: (1887 - 1965) Pseudonym of Cyril Kenneth Bird. British Cartoonist. A vintage, signed and inscribed colour 9 x 14 road safety print. As issued in support of the Ministry of War transport's road safety campaign by The Tilling Group of Companies, c.1942. The cartoon drawn images depicting adults and children at play in a road. The caption reading 'We don't play games in the road: So why do we let our children?'. Signed ('Fougasse') in brown fountain pen ink to the foot and inscribed 'To Arthur Dennis. A souvenir of a very pleasant partnership. Kenneth Bird', to a clear area at the head. EX
GILES CARL: (1916-1995) British Cartoonist. A vintage, signed and inscribed black and white 9½ x 7 print. As drawn for the Sunday Express for 12th November 1961. The cartoon drawn images depicting two drunk Welshmen being confronted by their wives, the men returning from Merthyr where Sunday Licensing laws had changed. The caption stating. 'Here they come, Morgan. Don't forget - sorry we are to be so late, minister's sermon was twice as long this morning'. Signed ('Giles') in black fountain pen ink, which has slightly faded, and inscribed 'To Charles Dennis, best wishes' to a clear area below the image. EXSponsored by prominent Welsh nonconformists in the Liberal party, such as future Prime Minister David Lloyd George, the Sunday Closing (Wales) Act 1881 banned the sale of alcohol in Welsh pubs on the Sabbath. It would not be repealed until 1961, when each county was charged with holding a referendum on Sunday opening, to gauge support in their particular area. While urban districts such as Swansea, Cardiff and Merthyr ditched the ban at the earliest possible opportunity, many rural and Welsh-speaking counties held on to "dry" Sundays.
KINGSLEY CHARLES: (1819-1875) English Clergyman, Novelist & Historian. Vintage signed carte-de-visite photograph, the sepia albumen image by Elliott & Fry of Baker Street, London, depicting Kingsley in a close-up head and shoulders pose. Signed ('Charles Kingsley') in fountain pen ink with his name alone to a clear area at the base of the image. Photographer's imprint to the verso. Rare in this form. Some very minor ink feathering to the surname and some light age wear to the image and with some slight traces of former mounting to the edges of the verso. About VGProvanance: The verso of the present photograph bears the small circular label of the Rawlins Collection and the image (illustrated without the signature) appears in The Guinness Book of World Autographs (1977). The photograph was offered by Sotheby's in their auction of the Rawlins Collection, 2nd - 4th June 1980 (Lot 1153, estimate £30/40, hammer price £16).
WILDE OSCAR: (1854-1900) Irish Playwright, Novelist & Poet. A very fine, rare vintage signed sepia cabinet photograph by Wilde, the engaging image depicting the dapper writer seated in a three quarter length pose in an ornately carved chair and holding a pair of gloves in his hands. Photograph by W & D Downey of London and bearing their imprint to the lower mount and verso. Signed by Wilde in bold fountain pen ink to the lower photographer’s mount, with his inscription commencing to a largely clear area at the base of the image, ‘Stuart Merrill from his friend Oscar Wilde’. An elegant and desirable signed portrait, with an interesting association. Some very minor traces of former mounting to the verso, some light uniform age toning and a very slight, indiscriminate thin mark running horizontally across a darker area of the image, otherwise VG Stuart Merrill (1863-1915) American Poet who wrote mainly in the French language. As the inscription on the present photograph suggests, Wilde would certainly have considered Merrill a friend; when the playwright George Bernard Shaw attempted to circulate a petition in London calling for Wilde’s release (whilst imprisoned for homosexuality) Merrill made a similar attempt to obtain the signatures of notable artists and intellectuals on a similar petition in the United States.
COCTEAU JEAN: (1889-1963) French Writer, Designer, Playwright, Artist & Filmmaker. Vintage blue fountain pen ink signature ('Jean Cocteau *') at the centre of a small 8vo card also featuring the four signatures of the cast members of Les Parents Terribles who performed at the Theatre du Gymnase in Paris in 1946, comprising Yvonne de Bray, Gabrielle Dorziat, Marcel Andre and Josette Day. All have signed in bold fountain pen inks with their names alone. Neatly annotated in ink in the hand of a collector at the head of the card with the name, venue and date of the play. SHAW GEORGE BERNARD: (1856-1950) Irish Playwright, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1925. A vintage colour picture postcard, depicting an autumnal glen entitled 'Eagle's Nest, Killarney'. Signed (G. Bernard Shaw) to a light area of the image and dated 1915. Postally used, with a New York times press cutting adhered to the verso regarding the first production in America of 'Major Barbara'. G
BLYTON ENID: (1897-1968) English Children's Writer. A.L.S., Enid Blyton, one page, 8vo, Old Thatch, Bourne End, Buckinghamshire, 29th October 1933, to 'Dear Children' [pupils of the Open Air school in Barnsley, Yorkshire]. Blyton thanks her correspondents for their letters and order for twelve more of Bobs' books, remarking 'The printer will send you them this week. Bobs is so pleased you like his books. I keep a few in my study, & he will go and lick the covers, isn't he funny! I suppose he feels very fond of them!' Blyton continues to add 'I am sending you some cards….I hope you will like them. I've written on the back what they are' and concludes 'Bobs sends you a loud bark. Dilly sends you hugs & kisses. I send you much love. Best wishes to your teacher'. Accompanied by the four different vintage postcard photographs referred to by Blyton, two depicting Bobs in different poses, one annotated 'Bobs & the tame baby thrush' and the other 'Bobs & Sandy' by Blyton to the versos in pencil, another showing Blyton seated outdoors in her garden, annotated in pencil to the verso 'Old Thatch. I am on well with Bobs by me', and the fourth showing part of her thatched roof home, annotated by Blyton in pencil to the verso 'The new wing we built on to Old Thatch'. Some very light, extremely minor age wear and with some very slight traces of former mounting to the verso of the letter and some very slight traces of former mounting to the corners of the photographs, generally VG, 5The 'Dilly' Blyton refers to in the present letter is her eldest daughter, Gillian, who had been born in 1931. Blyton also makes references to her fox terrier dog, Bobs, who contributed a weekly letter in Blyton's magazine Sunny Stories. The letters proved so popular that in 1933, the same year as the present letter, they were published in book form as Letters from Bobs, selling 10,000 copies in the first week.
BLYTON ENID: (1897-1968) English Children's Writer. A.L.S., Enid Blyton, one page, 8vo, Green Hedges, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, 17th September 1938, to 'My dear Girls' [pupils of the Open Air school in Barnsley, Yorkshire]. Blyton thanks her correspondents for their lovely letters and remarks 'I think you wrote them beautifully and I was so pleased to hear your news. You had a nice lot to tell me!....I loved the postcard photograph too - what a lovely place the camp is in! It must be fun to look out over all that water.' In concluding Blyton states 'Gillian and Imogen send you hugs & kisses. Bob sends you a bark each'. Together with a vintage postcard photograph of Blyton's young daughter, Gillian, standing outdoors in a full length pose, annotated in pencil by Blyton to the verso, 'Dilly sending you a smile'. A paperclip rust stain appears to the upper and lower edges of the letter, only very slightly affecting the paraph of Blyton's signature, and with some extremely minor foxing and slight traces of former mounting to the verso of both the letter and the photograph, not affecting the annotation. About VG, 2In the present letter, Blyton refers to her young daughters Gillian, born in 1931, and Imogen, born in 1935. She also makes a reference to her fox terrier dog, Bobs, who contributed a weekly letter in Blyton's magazine Sunny Stories. The letters proved so popular that in 1933 they were published in book form as Letters from Bobs, selling 10,000 copies in the first week.

A.L.S., Enid Blyton, to the verso of a postcard with printed text and illustrations advertising Blyton's children's weekly Sunny Stories, Green Hedges, Beaconsfield, n.d. (3rd February 1939), to Master John Thacker, a pupil at the Open Air school in Barnsley, Yorkshire. Blyton thanks her correspondent for their nicely written letter, remarking 'You seem to have had a fine time at Christmas!' and continuing 'Gillian is better now and back at school. She loved being in Hospital. She sends you her love'. Together with a vintage postcard photograph of Blyton's young daughter, Gillian, standing outdoors in a full length pose, annotated in pencil by Blyton to the verso, 'Dilly sending you a smile'. Some slight corner creasing and light overall staining to the letter and two small traces of former mounting to the verso of the photograph, not affecting the annotation. About VG, 2Sunny Stories was edited and written by Blyton, although she was only credited as the editor. As a result of Blyton's increasing popularity during the 1930s the magazine was renamed Enid Blyton's Sunny Stories in January 1937 and served as a vehicle for Blyton's books, which appeared as serials. BRANDEIS LOUIS D.: (1856-1941) American Lawyer, Supreme Court Judge of the United States from 1916 to 1939. A vintage sepia picture postcard, depicting the flag of the United States of America. Signed ('Louis D Brandeis') in bold black fountain pen ink to a clear area to the foot of the image and dated 1916. Postally used, with a press cutting adhered to the verso regarding the oath Justice Brandeis had taken to become a member of the Supreme court. With an annotation written by William Waudby of the Department of Commerce which refers to the postcards image as 'Our big, wonderful rose bush at 616 Lamont Street, N.W. and the flag that flew every day'. VG
[CREAM DR. THOMAS NEILL]: (1850-1892) Scottish-Canadian Serial Killer, known as the Lambeth Poisoner. Unsubstantiated rumours suggested his last words as he was being hanged were a confession that he was Jack the Ripper. Vintage unsigned cabinet by Piercy of London, the image depicting Miss Laura Sabatini (1868- ?) seated in a three-quarter length pose. An extremely rare photograph of the lady Cream was said to be engaged to. VGVery little is known of Sabatini, although her name features prominently in some newspaper reports of Cream's Old Bailey trial in 1892. Jack the Ripper is the best-known name given to an unidentified serial killer generally believed to have been active in the largely impoverished areas in and around the Whitechapel district of London in 1888.
JAMES ROY: (1935-1997) British Formula Two Racing Driver, Silversmith and Criminal, a member of the Great Train Robbery gang of 1963. James was used as a getaway driver in the theft and was also responsible for uncoupling the train carriages. Vintage signed and inscribed Christmas greetings card, the folding small oblong 8vo card featuring a colour illustration to the cover of an oil painting depicting Phil Hill driving his Shelby-Cobra racing car at speed during the 1964 Targa Florio. Apparently inscribed and sent to fellow Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs whilst in Wandsworth Prison, James has signed the card, beneath a printed greeting, in bold blue ink, 'Ron, My sincere best wishes to you. Hoping you're keeping well and family to. (sic) This is the second, so lets hope the next one's a little better. Your friend, Roy'. Some light staining to the edges, only very slightly affecting the paraph of the signature. Together with Buster Edwards (1931-1994) British Barman, Florist and Criminal, a member of the Great Train Robbery gang of 1963. A printed 4to edition of Flicks magazine, November 1988, featuring a colour advertisement for the soundtrack to the film Buster and an image of Phil Collins in costume as Edwards, to the back cover, signed and inscribed by Edwards in bold black ink to a clear area '….Why Me! Signed in bold black fountain pen ink with his name alone to a clear area of the background. Annotated in green ink to the verso by a collector, indicating that the signature was obtained in 1960. EDISON THOMAS: (1847-1931) American Inventor of the phonograph and light bulb among many other items. A vintage colour picture postcard featuring the image of a brick built building entitled 'Thomas A Edison's Birthplace, Milan, near Norwalk, O'. Signed ('Thomas A Edison') to a light area above the image and dated 23rd October 1912 in the hand of another. With an annotation to the clear of the right edge stating 'Science represented and historic Nov. 10. 09'. Postally used.VG
MARKHAM ALBERT HASTINGS: (1841-1918) British Explorer, Author, and Officer in the Royal Navy. He is remembered for designing the flag of New Zealand. Vintage signed 12 x 15 photograph, the image depicting Markham in a formal three-quarter length pose, wearing his uniform and medals, with his Dress Hat in one hand, the hilt of his sword in the other. Signed ('R E Peary') in bold, black, fountain pen ink, on a small label adhered to a clear area of the image, with another label to the foot stating 'SS Roosevelt'. Postally unused. Together with a vintage colour picture postcard, depicting a sailing vessel at sea, entitled 'Midst Sea and Sky'. Signed ('R E Peary') in bold, black, fountain pen ink, to a clear area of the image, and dated 23rd October 1912. To the verso is written, in another hand, 'Re-discovered the North Pole, nearly 1 year after Dr. F. A. Cook - April 6, 1909'. Postally unused, with a type written address. A good vintage blue ink signature ('Amelia Earhart'), above the signature of her husband ('G P Putnam'), both to the foot of a plain folio page. Beneath the signatures is written, in the hand of another, the date '4 Juin 1932'. With three file holes to the left edge, not affecting the signatures. VG
MARTIN GLENN: (1886-1955) American Aviation Pioneer and Aircraft Manufacturer. Blue fountain pen ink signature at the base of a 12mo card featuring an original black pen and ink caricature of Martin by an amateur artist. Accompanied by a T.L.S. by Martin's assistant secretary sending the autograph to a collector, 8th July 1947. Together with a fine blue fountain pen ink signature by Martin on a white card. Also including Leslie Frise (1897-1979) British Aircraft Designer of various planes including the Blenheim, Beaufort and Brabazon among others. A good pair of vintage signed 9 x 7 photographs, the first depicting two Beaufort aircraft in flight and the second showing a Bristol Bombay aircraft on a runway. Both have been signed by Firse with his name alone in dark blue fountain pen ink to light areas of the images. Both are neatly annotated in ink by a collector to the lower white border. A couple of light surface creases and a few minor pinholes to the edges and slight corner creasing, about VG, 4
CORRIGAN DOUGLAS: (1907-1995) American Aviator, known as Wrong Way Corrigan following his transcontinental flight from Long Beach, California, to New York in 1938 and return flight from New York to Ireland, even though he was scheduled to return to Long Beach. A.L.S., Douglas Corrigan, one page, 4to, n.p., 28th March 1948, to Herman Klinert, stating, in part, 'Although it will be 10 years ago this summer seems like yesterday because the war years went so fast I guess - was flying in the Army Ferry Command and testing A20's for the Douglas Co.' Corrigan has penned his letter to the verso of his correspondent's letter requesting Corrigan's autograph. A good letter for its reference to the pilot's historic flight. Together with Alan Cobham (1894-1973) English Pioneer Aviator, a specialist in long distance flights. Vintage signed sepia postcard photograph of Cobham seated in a three quarter length pose. Signed ('Alan J Cobham') with his name alone in bold blue fountain pen ink to a light area of the image. Also including a fine signed 5.5 x 8 photograph, a half length image of Cobham. LAURA: Selection of individual signed cards and album pages (a few vintage) by the main cast members and director of the American film noir Laura (1944) comprising Gene Tierney (Laura Hunt), Dana Andrews (Mark McPherson), Clifton Webb (Waldo Lydecker), Vincent Price (Shelby Carpenter), Judith Anderson (Ann Treadwell) and Otto Preminger (Director & Producer). Each of the signatures are attractively matted in maroon alongside each other and above and beneath a colour reproduction front of house still from the film. VANE-TEMPEST-STEWART CHARLES: (1878-1949) 7th Marquess of Londonderry. British Peer who served as Secretary of State for Air 1931-35, during which time he encouraged the planning of new fighter aircraft including the Hurricane and Spitfire. Londonderry is also remembered for his praise of Nazi Germany during the 1930s. A good vintage signed 8.5 x 12 photograph of Londonderry in a formal head and shoulders pose. With 158 victories, no other pilot claimed as many Western Allied aircraft. A good vintage bold, black, fountain pen ink signature ('Hans Joachim Marseille') and inscription , with place and date 'Afrika 4.9.42' in his hand on a 8½ x 5 card piece. EX

Vintage signed cabinet photograph, the sepia image depicting the King in head and shoulders pose (the image having been re-touched with brown ink). Signed ('Albert Edward') in fountain pen ink to a light area to the foot of the image, and dated 14th August 1882 in the Kings hand. Together with ALEXANDRA OF DENMARK (1844-1925) Queen of the United Kingdom 1901-10, consort of King Edward VII.
