Abrams, Inc., 2004. Comment(s): Warhol's lifetime Tiffany Christmas cards are rare, and extremely rare signed. The most recent sale price we found of a card, unsigned and without the envelope, was $3,000 at Christie's New York, December 1st, 2014, lot #62. In 1956, in addition to all the work Warhol was getting drawing shoes and bags, he was commissioned to design Christmas cards for Tiffany & Co. on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Warhol's cards were then published by Tiffany's every Christmas up to 1962, the year he started to exhibit his paintings of soup cans. Our example offered here is from the original first printing in 1960. The cards were subsequently reprinted in a slightly larger size in 1980. Artist: Cecil Beaton (English, 1904 - 1980). Title: "Marilyn Monroe 1956 #2". Medium: Original vintage photogravure. Date: Composed 1956. Printed 1968. Dimensions: Image size: 7 7/8 x 7 3/8 in. Edition size unspecified, presumed small. High-grade archival paper. Printed to the edge of the sheet. Fine, quality printing. Very good to fine condition; affixed to very thin and supple archival acid-free support sheet, not mount/board. Comment(s): One from the famous series of photographs taken by Beaton of Monroe at the height of both of their storied careers. Although associated with ‘Vogue’ through most of his career, Beaton’s 'Monroe' portfolio appeared in ‘Harper’s Bazaar’, for which he worked in the mid-1950s. It was while in New York for the rehearsals and premiere of ‘My Fair Lady’ that Beaton photographed Monroe. With a possibility that he would be the designer of Monroe’s dresses for ‘The Prince and The Showgirl’, Beaton arranged a photography sitting in his suite in the Ambassador Hotel in New York City on 22 February 1956. Ed Pfizenmaier, Beaton’s assistant, noted that Monroe did her own make-up and ‘came just by herself, with these two little dresses… it was as simple as that.’ Beaton later recalled ‘She romps, she squeals with delight, she leaps on the sofa. She puts a flower stem in her mouth, puffing on a daisy as though it were a cigarette. It is an artless, impromptu, high-spirited, infectiously gay performance. It will probably end in tears.’ The session produced one of Monroe’s favorite portraits, which hung in her New York apartment that she shared with her third husband, Arthur Miller. Comment(s): According to “Gordon’s Photography Prices” the auction record for a silver print of this scarce/rare image is $305,000 realized at Phillips, New York, 10/8/2015, lot #17. Arbus’s direct, confrontational approach to photography meant that her subjects did not always like their portraits. After seeing his, the writer Norman Mailer famously said, "giving a camera to Diane Arbus is like putting a live grenade in the hands of a child. Image copyright © The Estate of Diane Arbus, LLC. Artist: Frank Lloyd Wright/Taliesin Architects (American, 1869 - 1959). Title: "Vintage Frank Lloyd Wright/Taliesin Architects Designed Rug/Carpet from the Arizona Biltmore Hotel #04 [4 "tiles" - runner. Approximate size: 54" x 216" (4 1/2' x 18') horizontal. Wright rugs in various sizes are featured in all three days of our auctions]". Medium: Original vintage textile. Date: Composed 20th century. Pricing: Starting Price: $1,600 Reserve Price: N.A. Auction Sale Price Estimate: $2,000/2,500Lot Note(s): The semi-low pile rug has been professionally cleaned, joined, and bordered. Very good condition, with no holes, patches, stains, color bleeding, etc. Several minimal, virtually undetectable, professionally repaired tears. Provenance: Arizona Biltmore Hotel, Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.A. Please see the attached image showing the carpet, in place, as an integral part of the Biltmore Hotel’s design. Comment(s): Built in 1929 and known throughout the world as "The Jewel of the Desert," the Biltmore resort was designed by Albert Chase MacArthur with consulting from Frank Lloyd Wright and his Taliesin Architects, particularly on the brick design and general interior design, including the carpeting. Mr. Wright's carpet design was sent to the prestigious Wilton Carpet Manufacturing Company in Axminster, England, which used only the highest quality 100% wool available in its manufacture. The carpet was installed throughout the hotel as an integral part of the overall interior design. On June 21st, 1973, a tragic fire led to the replacement of all the carpeting throughout the resort, of which our example is part. "As classically correct today as the day it was created, Mr. Wright's modern use of line and rich jewel tones make this vintage carpet as modern and enduring as the Biltmore itself." (from the "Arizona Republic"). Included in several important collections, including the Baltimore Museum of Art. Image copyright © Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York. [25151-16-1600-NA]
