BERNSTEIN LEONARD: (1918-1990) American conductor, pianist & composer of the Broadway musical West Side Story. A scarce, early vintage signed postcard photograph of Bernstein in a profile head and shoulders pose at Teatro alla Scala in Milan and bearing the opera house's credit stamp to the verso. Signed by Bernstein in blue ink with his name alone to the lower white border. The signature is a little light in places, although reasonably legible. An historic signed image. VG In 1953 Bernstein became the first American conductor to appear at La Scala, conducting Maria Callas in Cherubini's Medea, directed by Luchino Visconti.

A rare and excellent vintage signed and inscribed 9 x 12.5 photograph of Storchio, the Esommariva image from Milano showing the Italian soprano standing in a full length pose, in costume. Signed in bold black fountain pen ink to the lower matted border `Rosina Storchio´, also dated beneath in her hand, Milano 1936. Inscribed to the upper border `A Marina Scialapen, Fiore di gioventu e bellezza con l´augurio d´ogni bene´("To Maria Chaliapin, Flower of youth and beauty with the wish of all the good´) Very light corner crease and few small stains to the matted border, otherwise VG Maria Chaliapin (1912-2009) was the daughter of Russian opera singer Feodor Chaliapin (1873-1938), widely regarded as one of the best bass singers of the 20th century.

RENOIR PIERRE-AUGUSTE: (1841-1919) French Impressionist artist. A good vintage signed 8.5 x 6.5 photograph, being a reproduction of one of the artist's still life studies featuring a fish and entitled Nature Morte au Poisson. Signed ('Renoir') in black ink with his name alone to the lower white border. Also signed by the Mayor of Cagnes beneath a short statement confirming the authenticity of Renoir's signature, dated 10th January 1911. The lower border also features the Mayor's official purple rubber stamp. Neatly mounted to a 9 x 9.5 page removed from a contemporary album. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG In the later years of his life Renoir suffered from the crippling effects of arthritis which impacted on his work and he turned to subjects which could be executed in the studio, including still-lifes. Such paintings could be finished quickly, illustrated by the sureness of the long, gestural strokes which define the fish in the present image. Nature Morte au Poisson, an oil on canvas, was originally owned by Renoir's cataloguer, the French art dealer Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939). Vollard, in order to avoid any future disputes regarding the authenticity of works by Renoir, had all the original paintings photographed and then asked Renoir to sign each photograph whilst being witnessed by the Mayor of Cagnes.
LEGER FERNAND: (1881-1955) French painter & sculptor. Vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 11 photograph, the image being a reproduction of one of Leger's paintings. Signed ('F Leger') and dated 23rd April 1916 in his hand immediately beneath the image and further annotated to the lower photographer's mount, in French, 'La prevue que l'homme descend du singe' (Translation: 'The proof that man descends from the ape') and signed and inscribed 'A Louis Mangel, Son Ami, F Leger' in fountain pen ink beneath. Scarce in this form. Some surface creasing to the image and some light age wear and one small tear to the edge of the photographer's mount. About VG

A wonderful, large vintage signed 9.5 x 11.5 photograph, the image depicting Picasso standing in a bare-chested full-length pose, wearing a pair of shorts and a pair of alpargatas upon his feet as he poses in a garden with several bushes and tall trees in the immediate background. Signed ('Picasso') in blue ink with his name alone to a clear area of the background at the head of the image. Also signed ('et Jacqueline') to the verso in blue ink by Jacqueline Rogue (1927-1986) French muse and the second wife of Picasso from 1961-73. A striking signed image. CHRYSOSTOMOS II OF ATHENS: (1880-1968) Archbishop of Athens and All Greece 1962-67. Vintage signed 8 x 10 photograph of the Archbishop in a half-length pose alongside Pope Paul VI. Signed ('+ Patriarch Athenagoras') in blue fountain pen ink with his name alone to the lower white border. A couple of very light, extremely minor surface creases, VG Paul VI (1897-1978) Pope of the Catholic Church 1963-78, beatified on 19th October 2014 by Pope Francis. Paul VI fostered improved ecumenical relations with Eastern Orthodox and Protestant churches which resulted in many historic meetings and agreements.
HOOVER J. EDGAR: (1895-1972) American law enforcement administrator, the first Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) 1924-72. Vintage signed 4 x 6 photograph of Hoover seated in a half-length pose. Signed ('J. Edgar Hoover') in blue fountain pen ink with his name alone to the lower photographer's mount. PROFUMO JOHN: (1915-2006) British politician whose sexual relationship with the young model Christine Keeler in 1961 created a scandal known as the Profumo affair. Vintage signed sepia postcard photograph of Profumo in a head and shoulders pose wearing his military uniform. Signed in bold blue fountain pen ink to the lower white border and dated 1945 in his hand. Some heavy traces of former mounting to the verso, otherwise VG Profumo served with the British Army from 1939-50, attaining the rank of Brigadier. He participated in the D-Day landings at Normandy and was engaged in the subsequent fierce fighting to secure that region of France.
JANNINGS EMIL: (1884-1950) German Actor, the first actor to win the Academy Award for Best Actor and the first person to be presented an Oscar. PERON EVA: (1919-1952) First Lady of Argentina 1946-52, second wife of President Juan Peron. Peron was the subject of the musical Evita by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, which was later adapted into a film starring Madonna in the title role. An excellent vintage signed and inscribed 3 x 5 postcard photograph of Evita in a head and shoulders pose. Signed in bold black fountain pen ink to a clear area of the image with a rare and desirable form of her signature ('Evita Duarte') and dated 1939 in her hand. Matted in a pale mottled grey above a brief printed biography and framed and glazed to an overall size of 7.5 x 12. VG At the time of signing the present photograph Evita Duarte, the future wife of Juan Peron, was employed as an actress, starring in popular historical radio dramas portraying Queen Elizabeth I, Sarah Bernhardt and Alexandra Feodorovna, the last Tsarina of Russia.
