[LISZT FRANZ]: (1811-1886) Austrian-Hungarian Composer. A good unsigned vintage 7 x 11 photograph by Louis Held of Weimar, the image depicting the composer standing in a three quarter length pose. Photographer’s blindstamp to the lower mount and with a contemporary ink annotation and date, in German, referring to Liszt, to the lower mount. One very small chip to the lower left corner of the mount, otherwise about EX Louis Held (1851-1927) German Photographer, a pioneer of photojournalism. Held established a studio at Weimar in 1882, becoming a protégée of Liszt.

Photographer's imprint to the lower mount. Some minor, light overall foxing to the mount and a couple of very slight surface creases, otherwise about EX The present image was most likely captured by Edmond Bacot (1814-1875) in Hugo's residence, Hauteville House, in 1862. Hugo was living in exile at Saint Peter Port in Guernsey from 1855-70.

[TWAIN MARK]: (1835-1910) American Writer. An excellent unsigned vintage 10 x 13 sepia photograph by A. F. Bradley of New York, the wonderful sepia image depicting Twain seated in a three quarter length pose, wearing a white flannel suit, 1907. Signed by Bradley in pencil to the lower border and also bearing his circular blindstamp in the lower left corner. Some slight surface creasing to the lower edge, not affecting the image or Bradley's signature, otherwise EX The present image was one of a series captured by Bradley in New York. The photographer erected a revolving stand in order to allow Twain, who had taken a certain dislike to photographer's studios in his later life, the most comfort while posing before the camera. It is stated that Twain regarded four of the images taken by Bradley to have been the finest taken during his life.

Vintage unsigned 2.5 x 2.5 photograph by Hirsch, the engaging image depicting Saint-Exupery seated outdoors in a full length pose, with several large buildings (reminiscent of New York) in the immediate background. Photographer's credit stamp and date, 13th July 1939, to the verso. VG Saint-Exupery went into exile in North America following France's armistice with Germany and lived in New York for several years during World War II.

Small selection of vintage unsigned photographs of various sizes (3.5 x 3 and slightly smaller and slightly larger and by an unidentified photographer), the images depicting London in candid poses with his second wife, Charmian Kittredge, standing and seated together on the outdoor steps of the old Winery Cottage, their home at Beauty Ranch, on board a boat, presumably the yacht Snark, and one image showing Kittredge alone at the wheel of the yacht. IMPERIAL RUSSIAN FAMILY: An excellent collection of twenty four vintage unsigned sepia cabinet photographs depicting various members of the Imperial Russian family and foreign royalty, the subjects include Emperor Alexander III (1845-1894), his wife Maria Feodorovna (1847-1928; the image depicting her with her young son, the future Tsar Nicholas II), Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna (1890-1958), Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich (1850-1908), Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich (1831-1891), Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich (1847-1909; 2, one image ), Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich (1857-1905), Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich (1860-1919), Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich (1827-1892), Grand showing him with his young child, and a third photograph of his three young children together), Duchess Anastasia Mikhailovna (1860-1922), Grand Duchess Olga Constantinovna (1851-1926, later Queen Olga of the Hellenes), Maria Christina of Austria (1858-1929, Queen of Spain; 2, one of the images depicting her in 1879 and the other, in 1887, with her young son, the future King Alfonso XIII of Spain) etc. Many of the images are by Bergamasco of St. Petersburg and other photographers include Adele of Vienna, Gunther of Brussels, Fernando Debas of Madrid etc. Most of the photographs are identified in the neat hand of a collector to the versos and all are loosely inserted into a contemporary brown morocco bound album, the cover of which features a vacant escutcheon shaped brass plaque and with a brass clasp. With decorative borders and all edges gilt. A couple of photographs with some foxing, the majority with just light age wear, generally VG.

West Germany, at the Empire Stadium, 30th July 1966, individually signed to the inside title page by ten members of the England World Cup winning team comprising Martin Peters, Gordon Banks, Alan Ball, Geoff Hurst, Bobby Charlton, Nobby Stiles, George Cohen, Roger Hunt, Jack Charlton and Ray Wilson. All have signed with their names alone in bold blue inks. Some light age wear and very minor damp staining to the edges of the title page, not affecting the signatures, otherwise an attractive set of signatures. About VG

Vintage signed and inscribed 4 x 5.5 photograph depicting Schweitzer seated in a three quarter length profile pose playing an organ. Signed in fountain pen ink to the lower white border and inscribed in French, 'At the organ of the church in Gunsbach, to Mr. Andre Previn with all my gratitude, Albert Schweitzer', and dated Lambarene, 1958 in his hand. Matted in a cream mount to an overall size of 6 x 8. A good association piece. The ink is a little faded, although quite legible. VG Andre Previn (1929- ) German-American Pianist, Conductor & Composer. Albert Schweitzer grew up in Gunsbach and the village is now home to the International Albert Schweitzer Association.

[TITANIC]: CARLISLE ALEXANDER M. (1854-1926) Irish Shipbuilder & Engineer, General Manager to Harland and Wolff who was partly responsible for designing and building the Titanic. A vintage postcard photograph depicting the SS Vaterland on her maiden voyage, signed ('A. M. Carlisle') by Carlisle to a clear area at the base of the image in bold, dark fountain pen ink. Vintage green fountain pen ink signature ('Houdini') on a page removed from an autograph album, with the additional holograph sentiment 'Locks, Bolts and Bars fly asunder' above his signature, further adding 'The Mystery Master, good luck' in his hand beneath his signature, as well as the date, Hull, 27th March 1920 also in his hand. SCOTT ROBERT FALCON: (1868-1912) British Royal Navy Officer & Antarctic Explorer. An attractive vintage postcard issued for the British National Antarctic Expedition 1901, the image depicting an artist's impression of a group of five explorers pulling a sledge through heavy ice and snow, with the printed Latin words Vive Valeque in the upper corner, also with printed captions to the edges indicating that the present card is number 3 (of 4) from Series 3 of Wrench's Links of Empire postcards, and further stating This card was posted from the “Discovery” at the last port of call before sailing for the South Pole, bearing the circular cancellation of the Antarctic Expedition, S. S. Discovery, 1901, hand addressed by Scott in fountain pen ink to the verso to Miss Eleanor Warrender at 87 Eaton Square, London SW, England, and bearing a New Zealand postage stamp and post mark dated 23rd December 1901. Some light age wear and a few minor surface creases, about VG Eleanor Warrender and her family were friends with the Churchill family, Eleanor herself being particularly close to Winston Churchill's mother Jennie, with whom she had served as a nurse on a hospital ship during the Boer War.

Signed ('Oxford') by Asquith in bold black fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount and dated September 1927 in his hand. Neatly mounted and contained in the original 4to photographer's presentation folder. BALDWIN STANLEY: (1867-1947) British Prime Minister 1923-24, 1924- 29 & 1935-37. A.L.S., Baldwin of Bewdley, two pages, 8vo, Astley Hall, Stourport on Severn, 16th March 1940, to ‘My dear Murray’. Baldwin asks his correspondent to give him two or three dates in May to select from and remarks ‘I have to attend a local celebration early in May but I haven’t got the date’ and further adds ‘I find the best connexion from these parts will bring me to Exeter at 4.45pm and return me from Exeter at 10.30am.’ Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Baldwin to The Principal at the University College of the South West in Exeter. Together with two vintage signed magazine photographs (3.5 x 4.5 and 4 x 6) by Baldwin, the first showing him in a head and shoulders pose and the second showing him in a full length pose carrying two chairs on his shoulders following an exhibition match of cricket at Chequers. Both are signed in fountain pen inks with his name alone (slight ink bleeding to the latter). Laid down (2), G to VG, 3

LATHAM HUBERT: (1883-1912) French Aviation Pioneer, the first person to attempt to cross the English Channel in an aeroplane. Due to engine failure on his first of two attempts to cross the Channel, he became the first person to land an aeroplane on a body of water. Vintage signed postcard photograph, an engaging image of Latham in a head and shoulders pose wearing a flat cap and with a cigarette in his mouth. Signed with his name alone in bold fountain pen ink, largely across a clear area at the centre of the image.
