* The Brackley Archive. A fascinating and important archive of approx. 230 manuscript letters written by Herbert Brackley to his wife, Frida, the first from Kamakura, Japan, dated 6 May 1921, the last from Christiansborg Castle, Accra, Gold Coast, dated 22 October 1948, together with an almost complete run of his pocket diaries from 1922 to 1948 (lacking only 1930), containing meticulous daily detail, mostly in pencil, also approx. 180 vintage b & w photographs of various sizes (some captioned), plus a good group of ninety-eight items of paperwork relating to Brackley’s time in Japan with the British Aviation Mission, c. 1920-23, and a further group of forty-two items of paperwork c. 1933-39 (including many telegrams) relating to his time with Imperial Airways. After the sudden death of her husband, Frida, was persuaded by his many friends and acquaintances to take the matter of his memoirs in hand and eventually, in 1952, she managed to publish a substantial tome entitled Brackles. Memoirs of a Pioneer of Civil Aviation, based mainly on extracts from his letters and diaries, a copy of which is included in this lot. (1)

*Pilkington Brothers. A collection of seventy vintage gelatin silver print photos, c. 1923-30, showing the buildings and glass making at the factories in Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool (?), London, Nottingham, Sheffield, and Southampton, most with wetstamps to versos, some with captions and all with neat captions on card, tipped onto margin versos, 24 x 29cm and similar, plus a contemp. related printed leaflet. Pilkington, the largest glass manufacturer in the United Kingdom, was founded in 1826 as a partnership by the Pilkington and Greenall families, and was based in St. Helens, Lancashire. (70)
