BEATTY DAVID: (1871-1936) British Admiral of the Fleet during World War I, commanded the 1st Battlecruiser Squadron at the Battle of Jutland in 1916, when he famously remarked 'There seems to be something wrong with our bloody ships today' after two exploded. Vintage signed postcard photograph of Beatty standing in a three quarter length pose wearing his naval uniform. Signed ('Beatty') in bold, dark fountain pen ink with his name alone at the base of the image. Neatly annotated in ink in the small hand of a collector to the lower white border. Together with an A.L.S., Beatty, one page, 8vo, Whitehall, 2nd March 1925, to Granard, on the printed stationery of the Admiralty. Beatty thanks his correspondent for their kind invitation for the following evening although regrets that he will be away as he must visit the Fleets and shall not be back for some time.
