ELIZABETH THE QUEEN MOTHER: (1900-2002) Queen Consort of King George VI. A most unusual vintage signed 11 x 10 photograph, the image showing the coffin of the late King George VI , draped in a Royal Standard, with a Crown resting on a cushion to the top, being carried by eight pallbearers, proceeded and followed by two other Royal Guardsmen, as they move the coffin from Sandringham before travelling to London by train. Signed in bold black fountain pen ink by Queen Elizabeth to the lower white border, with an extremely rare form of her signature, 'From Elizabeth R, The Queen Mother' and dated 15th February 1952, the day of the King's funeral, in her hand. Framed and glazed in a modern frame to an overall size of 13 x 11.5. Together with a piece of thick white twisted rope measuring 6 inches in length, being a piece of the rope used by British Naval officers to pull the gun carriage upon which King George VI's coffin rested during the funeral cortege. The rope is contained in an attractive wooden and partially glazed presentation case, bearing a metal plaque engraved with the words From the last journey of His Majesty King George VI, Admiral of the Fleet and Patron of the Royal Naval Association. May He be granted safe anchorage. Also including an original vintage unsigned 6 x 8 photograph of King George VI by Soper of London, showing the King standing in a formal three quarter length pose in the uniform of the Coldstream Guards. Framed and glazed in a plain black frame to an overall size of 7.5 x 10.5. Further including two folio pages removed from a photograph album bearing various photographs and newsclippings relating to King George VI's funeral and Royal Naval officer James, one of the pallbearers at the funeral, and to whom this collection previously belonged. Generally VG, 4 On the morning of 6th February 1952 King George VI was discovered dead in his bed at Sandringham House, Norfolk, and from 9th February his coffin rested at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham before lying in state at Westminster Hall from 11th February. His funeral took place at St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, on 15th February. In 2002, the remains of his widow, Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, were interred in the Chapel alongside him. A piece of rope was presented to each warship that King George VI, as Admiral of the Fleet, had commanded. The presentation case of the rope included in this lot is marked to the verso with the name of HMS Diana.
