PUCCINI GIACOMO: (1858-1924) Italian composer. A good, large vintage signed and inscribed 13 x 15 photograph, incorporating a musical quotation, the fine image depicting the composer seated behind his desk within the omnibus room on the ground floor of his villa at Torre del Lago, with the Forster piano upon which he created many of his immortal melodies visible in the background. Photograph by Alfred Ornano and with his small, attractive circular stamp to the mount beneath the image. Signed by Puccini in dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer’s mount, with an inscription in Italian, ‘Alla gentile Signorina Giulietta Berti, ricordo di Giacomo Puccini’, and dated at Torre del Lago, 3rd October 1903, in his hand. To the left of his signature Puccini has added a musical quotation of three bars which he identifies as being from his opera La Boheme, and represents the opening of the aria Si, Mi chiamano Mimi (‘Yes, they call me Mimi’) from the first act of the opera. Signed by Renoir in blue fountain pen ink with his name alone at the base of the image. FRANCE ANATOLE: (1844-1924) French poet and novelist, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1921. A vintage colour picture postcard featuring an image of Anthony Vandyck’s painting La Figlia di Carlo I D’Enghilterra, depicting King James II of England as a small child, signed by France to the lower white border, adding a few additional words and the place and date, Rome, 15th May, in his hand in French. Together with a second vintage picture postcard depicting the Pavillon de Bellescize at Saint-Brieuc, signed by France in dark ink to the lower border and with one additional word in French in his hand. Both postcards are hand addressed to Victor Proute in Paris by France to the versos and dated 16th September 1903 and 15th May 1904. DIETRICH JOSEF ‘SEPP’: (1892-1966) German politician and SS-Oberst-Gruppenfuhrer and Generaloberst of the Waffen-SS during World War II. Knight’s Cross winner with Diamonds. Dietrich was convicted of war crimes at the Malmedy massacre trial. A rare vintage signed 2.75 x 3.5 deckle edged photograph, the image depicting Dietrich seated in a full-length pose in his cell, reading a newspaper, whilst awaiting sentencing at the Malmedy massacre trial held in the former Dachau concentration camp from May to July 1946. Signed in blue fountain pen ink with his name alone to the base of the image, his surname running across a dark area. One small, light circular stain to the left edge, otherwise VG

About EXIn 1956 Hamilton appeared on stage in the role of Mrs. Zero in an off-Broadway production of Elmer Rice’s play The Adding Machine (1923) at the Phoenix Theatre. The play ran for just six performances from 9th – 12th February 1956.

HARLOW JEAN: (1911-1937) American actress & sex symbol. An exceptionally exquisite vintage signed and inscribed sepia 9.5 x 12 photograph of the platinum blonde in a full-length study, alluringly posing in a figure-hugging plain white gown and with one arm positioned behind her head. Signed in bold, dark fountain pen ink to a light area of the image with an inscription to Clark Gable, incorporating a quote from their film Red Dust, ‘ “E’s” in the port cabin, Just Jean’. Authentic autographs of Harlow are extremely rare in any form and it is hard to imagine a more desirable example than the present photograph, not least in regards to the quality of the image and the association. Some very light, minor thin bands of silvering to the extreme edges of the image, otherwise EX Clark Gable (1901-1960) American actor, Academy Award winner. Jean Harlow starred alongside Gable in a total of six films, including the box office successes Red Dust (1932; Gable also later starring in John Ford’s remake of the film, Mogambo) and Hold Your Man (1933). Gable was Harlow’s co-star in her final film, Saratoga, which was completed using doubles and released on 23rd July 1937, less than two months after her death. It was to be MGM’s most successful film of the year, and the highest-grossing film of Harlow’s career. Provenance: Acquired by the present vendor at Christie’s Entertainment Memorabilia sale in New York on 25th July 2003 (lot 71).

BOGART HUMPHREY: (1899-1957) American actor, Academy Award winner. Vintage signed and inscribed 7.5 x 9.5 photograph of the actor seated in a head and shoulders pose. Signed in fountain pen ink to the image, ‘To the crew of “The Ship”, Good sailing, Humphrey Bogart’. The signature and inscription are somewhat faded although legible when viewed at the correct angle. Neatly trimmed to the right border and with some light surface creasing and a few areas of loss to the image at the edges. Together with Lauren Bacall (1924-2014) American actress, the recipient of an Honorary Academy Award. Bacall was married to Bogart from 1945 until the actor’s death in 1957. Signed 8 x 10 photograph of Bacall seated on a desk in a three-quarter length pose, in costume as Vivian Sternwood Rutledge, speaking on a telephone as Bogart, in costume as Philip Marlowe, stands alongside in a scene from the film noir The Big Sleep (1946). Signed by Bacall in bold black ink with her name alone to a light area of the image. About G to VG, 2 The present photograph of Bogart was most likely presented to a pub where it was evidently displayed. Bogart himself was an enthusiastic sailor who had enlisted in the United States Navy during World War I and later spent around thirty weekends a year on the water after acquiring the sailing yacht Santana in 1945.

PAHLAVI MOHAMMAD REZA: (1919-1980) Shah of the Imperial State of Iran 1941-79. A fine vintage signed and inscribed 7 x 9 photograph of the young, handsome Shah in a half-length pose wearing his ceremonial uniform and decorations. Signed at the foot of the image in fountain pen ink with a warm inscription to his wife, Princess Fawzia, in French, ‘Avec tout l’amour de mon Coeur……Fawzia, cherie, Mohammad Reza’, and dated 31st January 1942 in his hand. The inscription and signature partially run across a darker area of the image. A rare signed presentation photograph with an excellent association. Some very light, minor silvering to the upper edge and a few minimal traces of former mounting to the verso, VGFawzia Fuad of Egypt (1921-2013) Egyptian princess who became Queen of Iran (1941-48) as the first wife of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Pahlavi and Fawzia were engaged in May 1938, however the union was largely regarded as a political move and the couple only saw each other once before their wedding at the Abdeen Palace in Cairo on 15th March 1939. It was not a love-match and Fawzia obtained an Egyptian divorce in 1945, which was not recognised in Iran until three years later.

WILKINS MAURICE: (1916-2004) New Zealand-born British biophysicist who shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1962 with James Watson and Francis Crick in recognition of their discovery of the structure of DNA. A good vintage signed 6 x 9 photograph showing Wilkins standing in a full-length pose at the feet of some aircraft steps, accompanied by his second wife, Patricia, and two young children, Sarah and George, whilst in Stockholm to accept the Nobel Prize. With various Swedish press credit stamps etc. to the verso. Signed by Wilkins in bold black ink with his name alone to the head of the image. The image of Wilkins’s eldest child has been neatly cut and applied using sellotape to the verso. Rare in this form. About VG

Vintage signed 6.5 x 8.5 magazine image of Vincent seated in a half-length pose, with a printed caption to the base, ‘Everyone calls him Vince. He owns a radio station in California, and he’s been to the ballet at the Royal Festival Hall with…hold it…Wee Willie Harris!’. Signed by Vincent in blue ink to the image, the conclusion of his surname running into a dark area. Neatly laid down to card, otherwise about VG

CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. A very fine, extremely rare vintage signed colour 10 x 13.5 portrait of Churchill, the image (approx. 8.25 x 10.75”) being a colour transfer print from a 1945 photograph by David Waddington, printed in the United States of America in 1946 and depicting Churchill in a head and shoulders pose wearing the uniform of Air Commodore, Royal Air Force. Signed (‘Winston S. Churchill’) by Churchill in fountain pen ink to the lower border, which also features the facsimile signature of Waddington. Mounted to a contemporary stiff card, presumably for the purposes of framing, and with very slight evidence of a former tear to the lower right area of the image (just touching one letter of the signature) which has been professionally restored to an exceptional standard. A highly attractive signed image of Churchill, and of the utmost rarity. About VG The present image of Great Britain’s wartime Prime Minister is believed to be one of only five signed copies in existence. We have only been able to locate one other example as having previously sold at auction (Sotheby’s, Churchill in Charge – 80th Anniversary auction, New York, 20th May 2020, lot 64, sold for $22,500). David Waddington was serving as an airman with the Royal Air Force when he was released from duty to photograph Churchill in 1945 as part of the RAF colour portrait project. Waddington’s work would be used to raise money for the joint benefit of the United States Army Air Forces Aid Society and Royal Air Force charities. Churchill was so delighted with the results of Waddington’s photographs that he later requested and signed five direct-colour transfer prints for presentation – the present example understood to be one of those five. Near identical transfer prints were produced in large quantities for fundraising purposes with Waddington’s facsimile signature but, of course, without that of Churchill himself.

RUSSIAN COSMONAUTS: An excellent vintage signed 7.5 x 5.5 photograph by each of the first eleven Russian cosmonauts in space comprising Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968; the first human to journey into outer space, travelling on Vostok 1, 12th April 1961), Gherman Titov (1935-2000; Vostok 2, 6th – 7th August 1961), Andriyan Nikolayev (1929-2004; Vostok 3, 11th – 15th August 1962), Pavel Popovich (1930-2009; Vostok 4, 12th -15th August 1962), Valery Bykovsky (1934-2019; Vostok 5, 14th – 19th June 1963), Valentina Tereshkova (1937- , the first woman ever to fly in space, travelling on Vostok 6, 16th – 19th June 1963), Vladimir Komarov (1927-1967; Voskhod 1, 12th October 1964), Konstantin Feokistov (1926-2009; Voskhod 1, 12th October 1964), Boris Yegorov (1937-1994; Voskhod 1, 12th October 1964), Pavel Belyayev (1925-1970; Voskhod 2, 18th March 1965) and Alexei Leonov (1934-2019; the first person to conduct a spacewalk, Voskhod 2, 18th March 1965). The image depicts the cosmonauts standing outdoors together in two rows in July 1965, most wearing their uniforms and each with their Hero of the Soviet Union (on the left breast) and Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR decorations (on the right breast). Signed by each in bold black and blue inks with their names alone to the lower white border. About EXAn historic and rare signed photograph; by the time that the twelfth cosmonaut, Georgy Beregovoy, flew in space in 1968 Gagarin and Komarov were both dead.

A good vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of Kennedy seated in a half-length pose and holding a pair of spectacles in his hands. Photograph by Life magazine and bearing their copyright stamp to the verso. Signed by Kennedy in black fountain pen ink to a light area at the head of the image, ‘To Watson Talbert, with every good wish, John Kennedy, USS-Mass’. An appealing signed image of JFK. Some very light, minor age wear and a few minimal surface and corner creases, otherwise VGThe engaging photograph of Kennedy was captured by Henry G. ‘Hank’ Walker (1921-1996) who took a number of iconic political photographs during the 1950s and 1960s and contributed over a dozen cover images for Life magazine in this period. Walker was assigned to Washington as a White House photographer in 1951 and later covered JFK’s 1960 Presidential campaign. The present image dates from early in Kennedy’s first term as a senator for Massachusetts and was also the portrait chosen for the dust jacket to his Pulitzer Prize winning book Profiles in Courage (1956).

WILHELM II: (1859-1941) German Emperor and King of Prussia 1888-1918. A vintage colour postcard featuring an image of a painting by Willy Stower depicting the German Emperor’s yacht S.M.Y. Hohonzollern sailing out of Venice in 1905, signed (‘Wilhelm I.R.’) by the Kaiser to a clear area at the base of the image, further adding a greeting in German in his hand, wishing the recipient a blessed Christmas and Happy New Year 1906. Some light, minimal age wear, about VG Willy Stower (1864-1931) German artist and illustrator during the Imperial Period, remembered for his nautical paintings. Kaiser Wilhelm II was an enthusiastic supporter and patron of the artist and Stower accompanied the Emperor on several voyages from 1905-12.
