THEATRE: An unusual folio hardbound scrapbook owned by Lynn Hope and containing many photographs of various sizes, theatre programmes, newspaper clippings and other printed ephemera, a few vintage signed photographs and some autograph letters etc., all collected during Hope´s career in the theatre, commencing with the Royal Shakespeare Company´s international tour of Titus Andronicus (with Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier amongst the principal cast members) across six major continental cities in 1957, including an official press release and tour itinerary, various railway and other travel tickets, an invitation to a supper held in honour of Leigh and Olivier in Paris on 24th May 1957 and a few other official invitation cards, tourist map of Yugoslavia and guide to Belgrade, programme for the performance of Titus Andronicus in Belgrade, June 1957, and another for the performance in Warsaw, a BOAC luncheon menu for the Stratford Memorial Theatre Company, Warsaw to London, passenger ticket and other ephemera for the flight (June 1957), a T.L.S. on behalf of Vivien Leigh by a secretary, to Lynn Hope, in part, ´I hope so much that we´ll work together again and that your plans for "The Entertainer" turn out well´ (8th August 1957), a vintage signed and inscribed 4.5 x 6.5 photograph of Laurence Olivier (with his initials), two programmes for The Entertainer at the Palace Theatre and the Royale Theatre (both starring Laurence Olivier), a handbill for Ivanov at the Shubert Theatre (starring John Gielgud and Vivien Leigh), various newspaper clippings relating to Leigh and Olivier and other thespians, a printed order of service for the memorial service to Vivien Leigh at the Royal Parish Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, 15th August 1967, an A.L.S., T.L.S., and signed Christmas greetings card (1955/56) by John Gielgud, in one letter stating ´We had a wonderful reception on Thursday, but, alas, the critics certainly do not share the enthusiasm of the audience´ (10th August 1963), an A.L.S. and signed and inscribed 6 x 8 photograph by Paul Scofield, a vintage signed postcard photograph and two different signed greetings cards by Margaret Rutherford, a vintage signed and inscribed 7.5 x 10 photograph by Robert Helpmann, and other signed photographs and letters by Claire Bloom, Alfred Lunt & Lynn Fontanne, Elizabeth Seal, Robert Morley, Peggy Ashcroft, Judi Dench etc. The majority laid down (most in multiples) to the pages, although a few letters and photographs only loosely inserted within the scrapbook. Also including a large 18 x 27 poster issued for the stage production of The Sisters Rosenweig at The Old Vic, London, 1994, individually signed and inscribed by the three prinicpal cast members, Maureen Lipman, Janet Suzman and Lynda Bellingham, and presented to Lynn Hope on the occasion of her birthday (framed and glazed). Some age wear and minor faults, generally about G to VG, 2Lynn Hope was the head costume mistress at the Aldwych Theatre in London and also performed the same duties on the tours of the Royal Shakespeare Company from 1955 onwards.

[CAPA ROBERT]: (1913-1954) Hungarian-American war photographer and photojournalist. An original vintage 8.5 x 6 press photograph by Capa, the silver gelatin print from the Normandy series of 1944 and the image depicting a Luftwaffe double decal helmet, with its national shield visible on one side, resting on top of a box containing an ammunition belt connected to a machine gun, possibly a Maschinengewehr 131. With the credit stamps of Capa for Life magazine to the verso and the brief original printed caption attached. Matted in cream and with a window in the backing mount, framed and glazed in a modern light wooden frame to an overall size of 15.5 x 13. Very slightly irregularly trimmed to the left white border, otherwise VG

RENOIR PIERRE-AUGUSTE: (1841-1919) French Impressionist artist. A good vintage signed 6.25 x 10.5 photograph, being a reproduction of one of the artist´s paintings of a female nude, standing in a three-quarter length pose and with her back to the viewer (strongly reminiscent of Renoir´s painting Apres le bain, 1901). Signed (´Renoir´) by the artist in black ink with his name alone to the lower white border. Also signed by the Mayor of Cagnes beneath a short statement confirming the authenticity of Renoir's signature, dated 10th January 1911. The lower border also features the Mayor's (slightly indistinct) official circular rubber stamp. Neatly mounted, otherwise VGThe photograph was originally part of the archive of French art dealer Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939). Vollard, in order to avoid any future disputes regarding the authenticity of works by Renoir, had all the original paintings photographed and then asked Renoir to sign each photograph whilst being witnessed by the Mayor of Cagnes.

HUGO VICTOR: (1802-1885) French novelist, poet and dramatist. A fine and exceptionally large vintage signed and inscribed sepia 18.5 x 24 photograph by Hugo, the engaging image depicting the writer seated in a three-quarter length pose on an ornately carved wooden chair, resting the side of his head on one raised hand. The edge of a carved wooden bookcase can be seen to the right of the image. Photograph by Walery of Paris and bearing their imprint to the lower border, c.1879. Signed and inscribed by Hugo in fountain pen ink to the lower photographer´s mount, ´A ma bonne Virginie Noel, Victor Hugo´. Signed photographs of Hugo of this size and quality are extremely rare and highly desirable. Some light overall age wear, a few chips to the edges and with a few tears to the upper edge of the mount, neatly repaired to a good standard. About VGVirginie Noel was a maid in the service of Hugo and Juliette Drouet between 1877-79.

COSTES DIEUDONNE: (1892-1973) French fighter ace of World War I, and later a distance records-breaking aviator. Vintage signed and inscribed 5 x 7 photograph of Costes standing outdoors in a three-quarter length pose, smoking a pipe. Signed in bold black fountain pen ink to the image with an inscription in French, ´à l’homme à la pipe, en tenue.....des soins apportés au grand raid´ (Translation: ´To the man with the pipe, in his outfit.....the care given to the great raid´) and dated 31st May 1927 in his hand. Together with Maurice Bellonte (1896-1983) French pioneer aviator who, with Dieudonne Costes, completed the first westbound crossing of the North Atlantic from Paris to New York, September 1930. Autograph draft of a letter, unsigned, one page, 4to, n.p., 6th August 1937, to Louis Couhe, in French. The retained draft is written on feint squared graph paper and contains various corrections, stating that he is forwarding a copy of a letter which he had sent to the Minister for Air and further remarking ´Je profite de l´occasion pour vous remercier de la lettre me concernant que vous avez recemment adressee a Monsieur [Jean] Moulin et du point de vue que vous y avez expose a mon egard´ (Translation: ´I take this opportunity to thank you for the letter concerning me that you recently sent to Mr [Jean] Moulin and for the point of view you expressed about me in it´). Some very light, extremely minor age wear, and two small traces of former mounting to the verso of the photograph, otherwise VG, 2Louis Couhe (1889-1979) French politician who flew as a Lieutenant during World War I and later served as Secretary General of the Air Ministry as well as Director of Air France Transatlantique.Jean Moulin (1899-1943) French civil servant who served as the first President of the National Council of the Resistance during World War II and is remembered as one of the main heroes of the French Resistance. At the time of the present letter Moulin was employed at the Air Ministry under Pierre Cot.

A good, large vintage signed and inscribed sepia 8 x 13.5 photograph, the image depicting the young, dapper Chaplin standing in a three-quarter length pose with his hands in his trouser pockets. Photograph by Pach Brothers of New York and bearing their pencil credit to the lower right corner. Signed by Chaplin in bold, dark fountain pen ink to the base of the image, ´To Jules from Charlie´. The comedian has further added an original small pen and ink self-caricature in his hand to the lower right corner, depicting himself in a head and shoulders pose in his Little Tramp costume. To the side of the sketch appears the greeting Helleu in Chaplin´s hand, and with an arrow pointing in the direction of the self-caricature. A rare and impressive signed image. A good, large vintage signed and inscribed sepia 14.5 x 13 photograph (including card mount) of Liszt seated in a full-length pose at his desk within his study at Weimar, surrounded by various tables and chairs and with a piano visible to the left of the image. Photograph by Louis Held of Weimar (1884) and bearing his blindstamp to the lower right corner of the image. Signed and inscribed by Liszt in fountain pen ink to the lower photographer´s mount, in German, ´Meinem liebster "Badedecker" (Frau Carrie Lachmund) herzlich ergebend, F Liszt´ (Translation; ´Sincerely yielding to my dearest ‘Badedecker’ (Mrs Carrie Lachmund), F Liszt ´) and dated at Weimar, July 1884, in his hand. Matted in cream with a decorative gold edge and framed and glazed to an overall size of 21.5 x 19.5. Signed photographs of Liszt of this size are scarce, and the present example has a good association. The signature is a touch light, although remains legible. Some light staining and minor age wear, about VGLouis Held (1851-1927) German photographer and a pioneer of photojournalism. Held opened his first studio in Liegnitz in 1876 and six years later located himself in Weimar where he became a protege of Liszt and was appointed court photographer to Carl Alexander, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach in 1888.Caroline ´Carrie´ Lachmund (1854-1889) was a harpist and the first wife of Carl Lachmund (1853-1928) American pianist who studied under Liszt at Weimar from 1882-84.

All of the postcard photographs are bound together in the original presentation booklet with decorative paper wrappers, and one additional unsigned postcard photograph is included in the set, the image depicting Belyayev and Leonov seated together in half-length poses and engaged in conversation as they review some documents on the table before them. It is unusual to find such sets of postcards in their original bound form as the majority of similar signed postcard photographs which are encountered today have been separated from the booklets at their perforated edges.
