SHAW GEORGE BERNARD: (1856-1950) Irish Playwright, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1925. Vintage signed and inscribed postcard photograph, to the verso, the image showing Shaw standing in a full length pose on a doorstep. Signed in black fountain pen ink to the verso, `Bernard Shaw for Brian Nicholson` and dated Ayot Saint Lawrence, 19th September 1947 in his hand. A slightly earlier date, of January 1947, appears at the head of the verso in Shaw`s hand (although in a different colour ink) most likely indicating when the photograph was taken. Some light staining to the verso, only very slightly affecting a small area of the signature and inscription, G

DOYLE ARTHUR CONAN: (1859-1930) Scottish Author, creator of Sherlock Holmes. A good vintage signed cabinet photograph, the image showing Doyle in a profile half length pose. Photograph by Elliott & Fry of Baker Street, London. Signed (`yours most truly, Arthur Conan Doyle`) in bold, dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer`s mount. Very slightly neatly trimmed to the edges, not affecting the image or signature, G Elliott & Fry, the eminent Victorian photography studio, occupied 55 & 56 Baker Street in London before moving to other premises in 1919. It seems appropriate that Doyle would have his portrait taken in Baker Street, his great creation, the detective Sherlock Holmes, living at the fictional 221B Baker Street.

TWAIN MARK: (1835-1910) American Writer. Vintage signed and inscribed sepia postcard photograph, the image showing Twain seated in a full length pose. Signed and inscribed in dark fountain pen ink to the white border, `With best respects to Miss Naurie (?) the irresistible, Mark Twain` and dated March 1909 in his hand. Additionally annotated in his hand to the verso, `Sometimes very very fair & just & upright people send me their pictures. But this time....alas!` The image is heavily scuffed and stained, making Twain barely recognisable as a result, also lightly affecting the signature and inscription (although these remain perfectly legible). The verso is unaffected, although there is some slight smudging to the text. P
