1927 AJS 2¾hp Model H4Registration no. XHH 524YFrame no. H74725Engine no. H74725The first AJS of 1911 was a single-cylinder sidevalve-engined lightweight displacing 292cc. The company first entered the Isle of Man TT that year, making an historic breakthrough in 1914 when it won the Junior event, the first such victory by a single-cylinder machine. From then onwards, the 2¾hp (350cc) sidevalve model remained a fixture of the AJS range. Light in weight (around 200lbs), robust and adequately powerful, the model is widely regarded as one the finest of early Vintage sports machines. This matching-numbers AJS was traded for another motorcycle with a well known dealer in Suffolk, who said it came from a Lincolnshire bereavement sale and had formed part of the deceased's large collection for some considerable time. It is believed that the bike was not on the DVLA system and was issued with the current registration when registered in 1982. The machine's smart appearance suggests that considerable refurbishment has been carried out at some time, although there is no information regarding any work. It should be noted that this machine was the subject of a total loss insurance claim in 2005. As a Vintage motorcycle the AJS will be eligible for the Banbury Run and other such events. Described by the vendor as 'A1' throughout, the machine has been recommissioned for the road and last ran in January 2023. Historic Vehicle status and a V5C has been obtained, and as such the machine does not require either road tax or an MoT. Keys present.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1980 Ducati 864cc 900SSRegistration no. DHT 527WFrame no. DM860SS*089571Engine no. 090078 DM860. Full engine rebuild by Paul Klatkiewicz of Ducati Technical Services.Otherwise highly original including factory supplied dual seat.Showing 22,123 miles, over a 1,000 covered from completing the 2006 Motogiro d'ItaliaWhen production of the original 750SS ended Ducati management had no intention of replacing it, believing that sports bikes had limited appeal and that the future of the bevel twin laid in the touring oriented 860 GT aimed at the US market. However the factory's hand was forced when Kenny Blake won the prestigious Australian production race at Bathurst in April 1975 on a roundcase 860SS, and was required to build a number of similar machines to allow the result to stand. Australia was an important market for Ducati and designer Fabio Taglioni was equally keen to produce a bevel twin with sporting and race winning potential; the result was the 1975 900SS with the GT's 'squarecase' engine, albeit a hand built special along the lines of the 750SS.To the surprise of no one outside Ducati's upper management demand for the 900SS outstripped supply and the model became a regular production model for 1976. Significantly outselling the GT /GTS every year (and eventually the Darmah too) developments were aimed at strengthening the bottom end, although in fairness weaknesses were often compounded by riders revelling in the low speed torque rather than revving the motor as Taglioni intended. To boost sales the UK importers requested a black and gold colour scheme which coincided with a switch to gold painted cast wheels. By 1980 the colour scheme seen on this bike was standard worldwide, along with cast wheels by Campagnola, Speedline or FPS; only the later (fitted to this machine) proved trouble free.Greg's dream of owning a bevel twin was eventually realised in 2005, persuaded by John Falloon of Made in Italy motorcycles, given his desire for a motorcycle to ride without reliability concerns, to buy this example which had an engine rebuild by Paul Klatkiewicz of Ducati Technical Services (receipts on file). Apart from the rebuild, braided brake lines, rear shock absorbers, alloy bellmouths and solo seat (original dual seat supplied) the bike is remarkably original including paintwork and decals often revisited under warranty or restoration. Faith in this particular 900SS was vindicated by a trouble free run of well over 1000 miles in the 2006 Motogiro d'Italia, despite it not really being the most obvious choice of machinery for an event built around vintage 175s.Although not run for a number of years and in need of recommissioning, this is a fine example of what for some is the finest Ducati ever built, an involving and charismatic motorcycle that can still show a clean pair of heels to modern motorcycles on sweeping roads.Supplied with original keys, dual seat, pillion footrests and - perhaps rarest of all - the original owners handbook.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Property of a deceased's estate1930 Sunbeam 347cc Model 8Registration no. OG 3898Frame no. D5743Engine no. K3343This Vintage-era overhead-valve Sunbeam belonged to the current vendor's late father, who acquired it in 2020. The father was a Detective Lieutenant in the Scottish police service and a keen motorcycle enthusiast, spending his spare time tinkering with bikes in the garage and going on various organised motorcycle rides. The Sunbeam has been kept dry stored in the garage since he passed away two years ago. The machine was previously on loan to the Marston Wolverhampton Heritage Trust between 1996 and 2007 (letter on file). 'OG 3898' previously belonged to a Robert Webley of Wolverhampton (from 1991) and was then inherited by a Thomas Henry Webley of Leicester in 1997 (the aforementioned Robert was his uncle). Then, presumably, ownership was transferred to a Richard Sidney Webley of Burntwood following the death of his brother Thomas Webley in 2017 (DVLA letters on file). A 2019 letter on file from the aforementioned Richard Webley states the machine was in his possession since 2013, but he actually inherited upon his brother's death.Following a period of inactivity, 'OG 3898' will require re-commissioning to a greater or lesser extent before further use and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's originality and mechanical condition prior to bidding. Accompanying documentation includes a current V5C; copy of old V5s; DVLA correspondence; various invoices; and the aforementioned correspondence.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1930 Sunbeam 499cc Model 9 Twin PortRegistration no. BF 8892Frame no. D7865Engine no. LL4435•Originally owned and raced in Germany•Rescued from storage in 2007 and repatriated to the UK•Restored over the following 10 years•Only used for occasional show rides since completionThis Vintage-era Sunbeam was rescued in 2007 from a barn in Germany (near the Czech Republic border) where it had been laid up prior to WW2 and remained undercover for 70-plus years. Slightly modified from original specification by its original German owner, this machine was reportedly campaigned at various European dirt-track races during the early 1930s. Apparently the bike was crashed in a race and the forks and front wheel were damaged. A replacement set of NSU forks was fitted to continue campaigning, and these were subsequently replaced with a complete (and better handling) 1932 Sunbeam front end (forks, hub, wheel, etc). The motorcycle was subsequently repatriated to the UK. An exhaustive tear down, inspection, and reassembly was conducted over the following 10 years, requiring only the reinstatement of the original kickstart lever and fitting a kickstart return spring, kickstart shaft, and quadrant. The main engine bearings were renewed, new valve guides fitted, and the valves and seats refreshed; these being the only renovations needed. A new, correct left-side tank knee grip was installed also and the wheels shod with new Dunlop tubes and Avon tyres. We are advised by the private vendor that the Sunbeam shifts and stops as it should, and that it is an extremely light, fast and manoeuvrable machine, capable of 80mph-plus with the right rider. It has only been used for occasional show rides since the rebuild. The machine is offered with a V5C document; VMCC dating certificate; Marston Sunbeam Register and Club dating certificate.Key not requiredFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1930 Montgomery-JAP 996cc V-Twin Registration no. KF 4391Frame no. MG 42193Engine no. KT/W 3293/S•Completely restored 2000-2006•Present ownership since 2016•Ideal Banbury Run participant•Outstandingly original'These Montgomery machines are for the men who prefer a distinctive mount in appearance and performance. That extra degree of soundness – those little touches which distinguish the 'super' machine from the mere motor cycle, come naturally to the Montgomery and at a price that is amazingly low.' – Montgomery advertisement. The Suffolk town of Bury St Edmunds is a long way from the British motorcycle industry's West Midlands heartland, yet this was where William J Montgomery chose to set up in business as a manufacturer in the early years of the 20th Century, although after WWI he relocated to Coventry. Like many of his contemporaries, including rivals Brough and McEvoy, Montgomery relied heavily on proprietary components, although the frame and forks were manufactured in-house. Indeed, Montgomery supplied frames and its own sprung fork to George Brough in the latter's early days. Montgomery had begun by manufacturing sidecars, and motorcycle combinations continued to be the mainstay of his business for many years. The company diversified after WWI, extending its line-up to encompass a 147cc two-stroke at the more affordable end of the range while offering a 996cc v-twin at the other. A make that did not re-emerge after WW2, Montgomery is best remembered today for its 8-valve Anzani-engined v-twin: one of the Vintage era's first 'superbikes' and a worthy rival to the Brough Superior SS100. This highly original JAP-engined Montgomery was formerly registered in the Isle of Man as a motorcycle combination (from 3rd July 1948) and comes with its old Manx logbook (issued 1987). Previous owner Geoff Keeling acquired the Montgomery in 2000 and completely restored it over a six-year period, taking the utmost care to preserve its originality. The work was finished in 2006. (Photographs of the machine 'as found', and still carrying its IoM registration, are on file.) The Classic Motor Cycle then featured the machine in a six-page article by Roy Poynting in its August 2007 edition (copy on file). Geoff Keeling rode the Montgomery on the Banbury Run once but used it infrequently thereafter. The current vendor has owned the Montgomery since 2016 and has used it sparingly. Kept in dry storage, the machine is presented today in fundamentally the same condition as it was immediately after the high quality restoration. Other accompanying paperwork includes a VMCC correspondence and dating letter; DVLA correspondence; some expired MoTs; and a current V5C document. The provision of a three-brush magneto is the only notified deviation from factory specification. A beautifully presented and rare machine which would grace any museum or private collection.Key not requiredFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
