Photograph by Gessford & Van Brunt of the Prince Studio, Union Square, New York, and bearing their imprint to the lower mount. Signed ('W F Cody, "Buffalo Bill"') by Cody in bold, dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount. Inscribed to his Counsel HAUPTMANN RICHARD: (1899-1936) German-born Carpenter and Criminal who was convicted of the abduction and murder of the young son of aviator Charles Lindbergh and his wife Anne Morrow Lindbergh. 'The Lindbergh Kidnapping' became known as 'The Crime of the Century'. An extremely rare vintage signed and inscribed sepia 7.5 x 9.5 photograph of Hauptmann seated in a three quarter length pose, smiling, apparently within the court rooms during his infamous trial. Signed in ink to the image, 'To my good counsel Egbert Rosecrans, sincerely, Bruno Richard Hauptmann', largely across a darker area and with weaker contrast and some fading. Autographs of Hauptmann are rare in any form and signed photographs are exceptionally so, the present example enhanced by an interesting association. Neatly trimmed to the right white border and with some light overall surface creasing, G £2000-3000 Egbert Rosecrans (1890-1948) American Lawyer, a member of Hauptmann's defence counsel in his trial for the abduction and murder of Charles Lindbergh's young son.
[STRATTON CHARLES S.]: (1838-1883) American Entertainer, known as General Tom Thumb, who achieved fame under the circus pioneer P. T. Barnum. An original unsigned printed oblong 12mo complimentary admittance ticket for one individual for General Tom Thumb's Entertainment, issued by the agent Alfred Gately. Together with an original vintage sepia carte-de-visite photograph, the albumen print published by E and H. T. Anthony & Co. of New York, c.1865, the image depicting 'General Tom Thumb and Wife, Commodore McNutt and Miss Minnie Warren in the identical costumes worn before Emperor Louis Napoleon and the Empress Eugenie at the Palace of the Tuilleres, Nov. 29, 1864'. With facsimile signatures of each of the subjects and the publisher's imprint to the verso. Some overall foxing and age wear to the carte-de-visite, G to VG, 2 £80-100
STRATTON CHARLES S.: (1838-1883) American Entertainer, known as General Tom Thumb, who achieved fame under the circus pioneer P. T. Barnum. Vintage fountain pen ink signature ('Compliments of Charles S Stratton') by Stratton on an 8vo sheet of plain notepaper, also bearing the signatures of Lavinia Warren (1842-1919) American Entertainer, the wife of Charles S. Stratton, Minnie Warren (1849-1878) American Entertainer, the sister of Lavinia Warren, and Commodore George Washington Morrison Nutt (1848-1881) American Entertainer. Annotated and dated Quebec, 1863, in ink in another hand. A rare set of signatures. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, otherwise VG £250-350 The present signatures date from the same year in which Stratton married Lavinia Warren, despite the advances of Nutt towards her. The marriage, spectacularly masterminded by P. T. Barnum, became front-page news and the wedding took place at the Grace Episcopal Church followed by a reception for 10,000 guests at the Metropolitan Hotel in New York. Nutt reluctantly attended the wedding as Stratton's best man and Minnie Warren acted as her sister's maid of honour. Following the wedding the couple were received by President Abraham Lincoln at the White House.
BARNUM P. T.: (1810-1891) Phineas Taylor Barnum. American Showman & Businessman, Founder of the Barnum & Bailey Circus. An excellent vintage signed 4 x 6.5 sepia cabinet photograph, the Betts image, from Bridgeport, depicting Barnum in a profile head and shoulders pose. Signed `P T Barnum´, a bold black fountain pen ink good signature example, and dated beneath 1885 in his hand. Extremely small overall age wear, otherwise about EX £800-1200
AMERICAN INVENTORS: Elisha Gray (1835-1901) American Electrical Engineer, remembered for his development of a telephone prototype in 1876 and considered by some as the true inventor of the telephone ahead of Alexander Graham Bell. Gray is also considered to be the father of the modern music synthesizer. Vintage signed sepia cabinet photograph of Gray in a head and shoulders pose. Photograph by Gentile of Chicago and bearing their imprint to the lower mount and verso. Signed by Gray in dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount; Amos Dolbear (1837-1910) American Physicist & Inventor, remembered for his invention of a system for transmitting telegraph signals without wires in 1882. Vintage signed sepia cabinet photograph of Dolbear in a head and shoulders pose. Photograph by J. W. Black & Co. of Boston and bearing their imprint to the verso. Signed by Dolbear in dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount; Douglass Ottinger ( - ) American Captain with the United States Revenue Marine, credited as the inventor of the Life Car. Vintage signed sepia cabinet photograph of Ottinger in a half length pose wearing an official overcoat. Photograph by W. A. Morand of Erie, Pennsylvania and bearing his imprint to the lower mount. Signed by Ottinger with his name alone in fountain pen ink at the head of a printed biography to the verso. With a couple of pencil and ink annotations in another hand to the upper edge of the verso. BRUNEL ISAMBARD KINGDOM: (1806-1859) British Engineer. A rare vintage signed carte-de-visite photograph by Brunel, the original image seemingly removed and subsequently neatly and professionally replaced with a vintage albumen image of the famous portrait of Brunel by Robert Howlett depicting the engineer standing in a full length pose in front of the giant launching chains on the 'checking drum' braking mechanism at John Scott Russell's Millwall shipyard in 1857. Signed ('I K Brunel') by Brunel in dark fountain pen ink with his name alone to the lower photographer's mount, the very upper edge of his signature slightly obscured as a result of the image being laid down above the signature. With the imprint of the London Stereoscopic Company to the verso. Some extremely minor, light age wear and a couple of light scuffs to the image. About VG £2000-3000 The iconic image of Brunel was captured by Robert Howlett as part of his commission for the Illustrated Times to document the construction of the world's largest steamship, the SS Great Eastern which had been designed by Brunel. The present image was taken in November 1857 to celebrate the launch of the steamship and has been described as 'one of the first examples of environmental portraiture'. Robert Howlett (1831-1858) British Photographer, a pioneer in the field who, upon his untimely death at the age of 27, was described by the Illustrated Times as 'one of the most skilful photographers of the day'. Despite the present example not being a signed photograph of Brunel in it's true, original state, it nevertheless remains an extremely rare example of a signed portrait of the engineer that would, in our opinion, certainly satisfy the desires of most collectors looking to acquire a signed photograph of Brunel.
KRUPP ALFRED: (1812-1887) German Industrialist, noted for his development and worldwide sale of cast-steel cannon and other armaments. A very fine vintage signed sepia 8.5 x 11 photograph, the oval image depicting Krupp in a formal head and shoulders pose. Signed in fountain pen ink to a light area beneath the image and dated Essen, 2nd January 1884 in his hand. About EX £100-150

An engaging vintage signed 8 x 10 photograph of the young actress in a head and shoulders pose affectionately holding a Siamese kitten in her hands. The publicity portrait, by Tunbridge of London and bearing their credit stamp to the verso, was issued for Leigh's role as the double agent Madeleine Goddard in the British spy film Dark Journey (1937). A vintage signed and inscribed neatly irregularly trimmed (approximately 5 x 7.5) sepia magazine portrait of Leigh in a head and shoulders pose in costume from her most famous role as Scarlett O'Hara in the historical romance film Gone with the Wind (1939). Signed by Leigh in fountain pen ink to a clear area of the image, the signature a little light in places. It was for her role in this film that Leigh won the first of her two Best Actress Oscars. A scarce A.L.S., Margaret, on two sides of her personal blind embossed monogrammed correspondence card, n.p., n.d. ('Thursday'), to Sir Rennell [Rodd; 1858-1941, British Diplomat]. The Princess sends her correspondent 200 krona as a subscription for the seats in church. Vintage signed 8 x 10 photograph by Hope, the promotional Paramount image showing the American comedian in a half length pose, in costume, in a scene of `Off Limits´, released in England as `Military Policemen´ (1953), alongside Marilyn Maxwell. Together with a selection of signed clipped pieces, A.Ls.S. etc., by various children and children-in-law of Queen Victoria comprising Victoria, Princess Royal (A.L.S., The Crown Princess of Germany & Prussia & Princess Royal, in the third person, to General Dillon, thanking him for some 'charming little souvenirs from India', Berlin, 1886), Prince Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (ink signature, 1882), Princess Helena (two A.Ls.S., in one suggesting an appointment at Buckingham Palace and in the other sympathising with her correspondent in regards to their illness and suffering, accompanied by the original envelope), Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein (A.L.S.), Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll (two A.Ls.S., in the first thanking her correspondent for a 'charming & useful warm woolly cape' and in the second thanking her correspondent for the 'beautiful photographs of the piazza and fountain at Palermo' and adding that they have given her much pleasure and made her long to go there), John Campbell, Duke of Argyll (two A.Ls.S., in one thanking his correspondent for a valuable article which he has read and commenting 'The chief danger….seems to me to lie in ignorance of the views of different parts of the Empire & even the Times of yesterday seems to insist on the old nonsense that everybody must be persuaded to be Free Traders', 1885), Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn (two A.Ls.S., in the first referring to an individual 'whom the Queen proposes giving the Order of the Royal Red Cross' and in the second thanking his correspondent for an enclosure, which interested him very much, and amusingly remarking 'I shall do my very best to procure the Irish brogue & hope that the next time we meet you will hardly understand me'), Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany (3; one being a clipped signature and the other two the signed front panels of autograph envelopes, one addressed to the Queen at Brighton and marked as private) and Princess Beatrice (A.L.S., writing on behalf of the Queen and asking her correspondent, [Emma] Prothero to let Mr. Dore know how very much the Queen admired his pictures and that 'Mama is very sorry that she could not this time see Mr. Dore's new picture, & particularly regrets the sad cause which has prevented him from finishing it'). Further including a small selection of A.Ls.S. (2) and printed ephemera etc. relating to Queen Victoria including an A.L.S. by Jane Loftus, Marchioness of Ely, to Lady Rosslyn, written two days after the death of Prince Leopold and stating, in part, 'The Queen knew the great affection our dear Prince had for you. Her Majesty is well in health, but sadly overcome with grief. The Duchess of Albany is also well in health but is unhappy & afflicted. Her brother came to-day & the Queen of the Netherlands comes to-morrow', two partially printed invitations to the English comedian and actor George Grossmith, and an attractive small 4to printed music programme for a performance at Buckingham Palace on 21st June 1871 etc. Some overall age wear and various minor faults, generally G to about VG, 22 £200-300

Signed in bold blue ink to a clear area at the base of the image and dated April 1951 in his hand.
