SULLIVAN ARTHUR: (1842-1900) English Composer. Vintage signed sepia cabinet photograph, the image depicting a monocled Sullivan standing in a half-length pose dressed in an elegant suit and jacket. Signed ('Arthur Sullivan') in bold black ink fountain pen ink to the image, and dated Leeds, 1898in his hand. Matted in cream and framed and glazed in the original ornate wooden frame to an overall size of 7½ x 9½. VG A contemporary typed transcript entitled Music Notes and apparently copied from the Jamestown Journal, 16th September 1898, is pasted to the verso of the frame and would appear to provide an insight into how the signed photograph of Sullivan was acquired. The transcript states, in part, 'While pleasure touring recently in England, James W. Butterfield achieved with a diplomatic stroke of the pen what a dozen reporters would have sweat a dozen hat bands off to have done half as well. Arrived at the Leeds Festival he found the tickets to be beyond price....he penned a winsome note to the director, Sir Arthur Sullivan hinting at the long pilgrimage he had made to attend the festival. Imagine our townman's surprise when he was invited to the director's room, and escorted personally by the great man to one of the best seats in the hall. Later he passed a week at Sir Arthur's home.....' The Leeds Triennial Musical Festival ran from 1858 -1985 and in 1880 Sullivan was appointed as director and principal conductor of the festival. He oversaw the production of seven festivals until 1898, the year in which the present photograph was signed.
