BEATLES THE: A vintage printed 4to programme for The Beatles Show at the Odeon, Weston-Super-Mare (24th July 1963), individually signed to the cover by all four of The Beatles individually, John Lennon ('John Lennon'), Paul McCartney ('Paul McCartney, love to Sylvia), George Harrison ('To Sylvia, George Harrison xx') and Ringo Starr ('Ringo Starr'). Signed ('Clementine Princess Napoleon') and dated 1919 in her hand in bold black fountain pen ink to a light area of the image, on the reverse of a letter from a member of Clementine's staff that reads in part, 'Princess Napoleon is very pleased to send you her portrait. CARLOS I: (1863-1908) King of Portugal 1889-1908. Assassinated. A fine vintage signed 7 x 11 photograph depicting the King standing in a full length pose wearing a white military tunic and plumed helmet upon his head. Signed ('Carlos de Braganca') in fountain pen ink to a clear area at the base of the image and dated Elveden, 3rd December 1902 in his hand. Professionally matted in pale blue and framed and glazed in a gilt frame to an overall size of 12 x 16. Some very light, extremely minor age wear to the image, VG. King Carlos I visited England at the end of November 1902 and spent the weekend with King Edward VII at Sandringham before visiting Lord Iveagh at his Elveden Hall residence in Suffolk. Provenance: The photograph was presented to John Savile Lumley-Savile, 2nd Baron Savile (1853-1931) of Rufford Abbey, Nottinghamshire, who presumably was also a guest of Lord Iveagh when King Carlos I visited.

An excellent, rare vintage signed 22 x 17 photograph by Benjamin Harrison and various other judges, diplomats and officials involved in the International Tribunal held in Paris from June - September 1899 which met to determine the British Guiana border dispute between Venezuela and Great Britain. Some extremely light, minor age wear to the photographer's mount, VG In 1840, the British Government assigned Robert Hermann Schomburgk to survey and mark out the western boundary of British Guiana with newly independent Venezuela. Venezuela did not accept the Schomburgk Line, which placed the entire Cuyuni River basin within the colony. Venezuela claimed all lands west of the Essequibo River as its territory. The dispute continued on and off for half a century, culminating in the Venezuela Crisis of 1895, in which Venezuela sought to use the United States' Monroe Doctrine to win support for its position. American President Grover Cleveland used diplomatic pressure to get the British to agree to arbitration of the issue, ultimately agreeing terms for the arbitration which suited Britain. An arbitration tribunal convened in Paris in 1898, and issued its award in 1899. The tribunal awarded about 94% percent of the disputed territory to British Guiana.

T.L.S., Blanche Patch, by Shaw's secretary, one page, oblong 8vo, Whitehall Court, London, 7th September 1934, to Julius Klein. Patch writes on behalf of Shaw, stating, in part, 'Mr. Bernard Shaw asks me to say that he never met Casement and knew nothing about him that is not common property. He knew his cousin Mrs. Parry; and through her he strongly urged Casement not to make a lawyer's defence, which would inevitably hang him. Mr. Shaw drew up a plan for his procedure in court. But the lawyers over ruled it, and he was hanged….' Accompanied by the original envelope. Together with Rufus Isaacs (1860-1935) 1st Marquess of Reading. English Lawyer & Politician. JELLICOE EARL: (1859-1935) British Admiral of the Fleet during World War I. A.L.S., J R Jellicoe, two pages, 4to, n.p., 2nd October 1916, to 'My dear Sir Charles', on the blind embossed and printed stationery of H.M.S. Iron Duke. Jellicoe states that he should be most glad to welcome his correspondent in the Fleet, but is not sure it will be worth while him coming for a day, explaining 'Our circumstances are such that with great regret we are not able to put up visitors onboard for a night at the main base & consequently this means arrival at say 9am & return at about 5 or 6pm to Thurso & ourselves staying 2 nights at Thurso. It is quite comfortable there.' The admiral continues to offer further advice on making his correspondent's proposed visit as pleasant as possible, concluding 'I should avoid leaving London on Saturday, Sunday or Friday owing to train difficulties at this end.' BEATTY DAVID: (1871-1936) British Admiral of World War I. Vintage signed postcard photograph of Beatty standing in a three quarter length pose wearing his naval uniform. Photograph by Russell & Sons of Southsea and bearing their blindstamp. Signed ('Beatty') in dark fountain pen ink with his name alone to the image, across a darker area although perfectly legible. Together with two A.Ls.S., Beatty, four pages (total), small 4to, Regent's Park and Spring Gardens, London, 17th July & 27th October 1920, both to Sir Rennell Rodd. In the first letter Beatty thanks Rodd for a useful collection of quotations and continues 'Your digest on the value of Sea Power in the early ages is clearly indictive of the fact that it was recognised by those who ruled the destinies of the predominant Powers from the very beginning and further that as soon as it was neglected the predominant power began to crumble. I do not think that Prince Bulow could have answered your question without committing himself, and your deductions from history left him with but little to say except admit the impeachment.' Beatty's second letter again thanks Rodd for some Biblical quotations ('which is very apt as you say [for] the whole Service but more particularly to Submarines') further commenting 'I am a little prejudiced at quoting the Bible as it is not my strong point'. HAMEL GUSTAV: (1889-1914) British Pioneer Aviator. Hamel delivered the first official airmail in Great Britain on 9th September 1911. Vintage signed sepia postcard photograph, an historic image depicting Hamel and his aircraft preparing to leave Hendon for Windsor to make the first official airmail flight in Great Britain. Signed in bold, dark fountain pen ink to a light area at the head of the image and dated 1913 in his hand. Together with Marcel Desoutter (1894-1952) English Pioneer Aviator, founder of the Desoutter Aircraft Company. Vintage signed sepia postcard photograph of Desoutter in a head and shoulders pose seated in the cockpit of his aircraft. Signed ('M Desoutter') in dark fountain pen ink to the verso and dated Hendon, 28th August 1912 in his hand. Together with a second vintage signed sepia postcard photograph by Desoutter, the image showing several aircraft and onlookers at the London Aerodrome, Hendon. TEMPLE GEORGE LEE: (1892-1914) British Pioneer Aviator, the first pilot to fly upside down in Great Britain, 24th November 1913, and the youngest pilot to fly from Paris to London, October 1913. Series of four T.Ls.S., George Lee Temple & G L Temple, five pages (total), 4to, London Aerodrome, Hendon, 8th January - 12th February 1913, to Sidney Lee, on the printed stationery of the Temple School of Aviation. Temple outlines the particulars of his tuition in monoplanes, 'Our fees for tuition include breakages, personal accident insurance and 3rd party insurances are £58. That covers the pupil for a period of 6 months until he has obtained his Pilots Certificate from the Royal Aero Club. Our method for tuition is a carefully thought out scheme commencing on a slow monoplane on the ground and gradually increasing to faster machines in the air. The certificate is issued when the pupil has covered a distance of ten figure eights (being officially observed). He has then to rise to a height of 165 feet and land with the engine switched off.' and in the following letters offers his correspondent a reduced rate for tuition and refers to a Caudron Biplane which they are due to acquire. Together with two correspondence cards signed by Temple and the aviator's unsigned personal visiting card. Autographs of Temple are rare in any form following his tragically early death at the age of 22 in a flying accident at Hendon on 25th January 1914. Blackburn states that he has pleasure in sending his autograph to his correspondent. Together with a correspondence card signed by Blackburn, dated Hendon, December 1912 in his hand, and a vintage sepia postcard photograph depicting various aircraft at Grahame-White's flying school at Hendon, signed to the verso by Blackburn with his name alone.
