Afghan War Rug Collection, A Collection of 5 vintage Afghan war rugs, each hand woven rug depicting Russian military equipment, guns and ordinance, each 80cm x 62cm A Brief history of the war rug (Dari: فرش جنگی, romanized: farš jangi) The tradition of war rugs in Afghanistan traces its roots back to the tumultuous decade of , persisting through subsequent military, political, and social upheavals. Following the Soviet Union's invasion, Afghan rug-makers swiftly integrated the machinery and tools of war into their designs. The labels "Baluch" and "war rug" are broad classifications coined by rug dealers, commercial galleries, collectors, critics, and commentators. What sets these rugs apart is their unique ability to articulate the experiences and perspectives of their creators regarding the circumstances and politics of war and conflict in the region. Even after the USSR's withdrawal, the same themes and motifs persistently reemerge and undergo reinterpretation. Notably, in the aftermath of 9/11, the events of that fateful day found expression in these carpets. More recently, since 2015, drones have become a prevalent subject matter in the evolving narrative of war rugs.
