Two vintage top hats, together with a brown leather carry case. (3) The grey hat: W.L.Thomson & Son Ltd, 25-27 Union street, Glasgow and at Edinburgh, Newcastle 1 & Middlesbrough. There is moderate wear to the exterior and interior shows wear also, requires cleaning. To the intererior the length is 19.5cm, the width 15.5cm and the circumference is 57cm. The black hat: Makers mark to the interior of `Special quality Trade Mark` within a shield. The interior has a tag with No.7 The Interior measurements are width 16 cm, 20cm length and diameter once again is 57 cm. This hat is in better condition and doesn`t require cleaning.

Two lady`s vintage fur coats. (2) The fur coat with the leopard print needs a small amount of re-stitching to the inside lining, only a very minor repair. There are also a few patches to the exterior which show wear - the right hand elbow of the jacket has worn thin and the reverse of the left shoulder along the seem. Neither of the jackets smell musty or require major repair. The leopard fur is slightly longer, aroudn 90cm, whilst the other jacket is around 80cm.

A group of five rare vintage gelatin silver prints from the photographer’s trip to the UK in 1977, photographs are of Dinas Mawddy, Ceredigion, 26 x 39cm, “Towards Aberdyfi, Ynyslas, Ceredigion”, 29 x 39cm, plus three similar size photographs of architectural details of Salisbury Cathedral, each with photographer’s Italian stamp to verso, all but one in thin matt mounts. These are part of the only known photographs Ciol has made of the UK. They have not been circulated or published other than in an issue of Ffoto Gallery magazine. (5)

* Pacific Islands propaganda. A group of seven large vintage gelatin silver prints, 1957/58, all mounted with pencil captions to mounts, including “Gilbertese dancers, Christmas Island” x 2 (one from 1957 and one from 1958), two titled “Apia, Samoa”, one dated 1957, both showing one adult with two children, plus two group portraits of happy Christmas islanders dated 1957 and 1958, plus one view of a line of thatched huts on Christmas Island dated 1958, approx. 35 x 41cm and sl. smaller, mounts a little soiled and one uniformly toned, no marks or credits to versos. During 1957 and 1958 Britain conducted nuclear tests in the Pacific including six at Christmas Island, then a British colony. British, Australian, New Zealand and Fijian servicemen were exposed to risks of radiation, as were the indigenous Gilbertese in the test zones. For decades personnel exposed to the radiation have sought compensation from Britain’s Ministry of Defence who deny negligence or that sickness is caused by exposure to the radiation. These fine photographs were probably taken by the British RAF to demonstrate how life was unaffected by the nuclear tests. (7)

CODY W. F.: (1846-1917) American Showman, known as Buffalo Bill. A.N.S., W F Cody, Buffalo Bill, on the verso of his printed visiting card, n.p. (London), 1887. In bold dark ink Cody has penned the statement `Was the kind ever seen in London before?` signing his name in both forms below. Professionally double matted in grey and white beneath an attractive vintage colour 7.5 x 11.5 print of Cody. Handsomely framed and glazed in a wooden frame to an overall size of 16 x 23.5. A few small pinholes and an extremely light band of discoloration appear at the edges of the card, otherwise VG Buffalo Bill performed in London in 1887 as part of the celebrations for Queen Victoria`s Jubilee.

Green ink signature (`Tenzing`) and date, 30th August 1955, in his hand on an envelope bearing a typed quotation by Edmund Hillary referring to Tenzing and himself reaching the summit of Everest. The quotation is surrounded by a colourful design. The verso of the envelope bears Tenzing`s typed address and is postally cancelled at Darjeeling, 30th August 1955. Signed by Taft in bold, dark fountain pen ink to the clear lower border, `For the Y.M.C.A. of Washington New Jersey, with best wishes, Wm. H. Taft` and dated Washington D.C., 4th April 1924 in his hand. Very slightly neatly trimmed at the edges, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG Taft served as 10th Chief Justice of the United States from 1921-30. He is the only Chief Justice to have also served office as President.

Signed in bold black ink across a light area at the centre of the image, with a lengthy inscription in Spanish, `To a great friend and partner from the struggle, Regino Boti and family, Until Victory Always, Che` and dated 1st November 1964 in his hand. Signed photographs of Che are exceptionally rare, and this is an excellent example with an interesting association. VG Regino Boti Leon (1923-1999) served as Fidel Castro`s first Minister of the National Economic Council in the Cuban Revolutionary Government Cabinet of January 1959. He had previously founded Cuba`s first school of economics in 1956.
