A very fine vintage signed and inscribed 13 x 12 photograph, the image depicting Chamberlain seated in a three quarter length pose with his young son, Francis, seated on his knee. Chamberlain's wife, Anne, appears at their side. Photograph by H. J. Whitlock & Sons Ltd. Signed in bold dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount, 'To Monty Barlow from Neville Chamberlain' and dated 1938 in his hand. Professionally matted in black and framed and glazed in a silver coloured frame to an overall size of 18 x 17. Signed photographs of Chamberlain of this size and quality are rare and desirable. EX

Signed ('Rommel') in bold pencil with his name alone at the base of the image, which also features a facsimile signature. VG
EDWARD VII: (1841-1910) King of the United Kingdom 1901-10. A.L.S., Albert Edward, as Prince of Wales, two pages, 8vo, Rome, 20th March 1859, to Lord de Ros. The Prince thanks his correspondent for their letter and the accompanying book, remarking 'I have already been reading some parts of it & find it most entertaining' , further stating 'I can assure you that I am enjoying my stay in Rome excessively; there are so many interesting objects to be seen, that I think it would really occupy fully a year to see everything properly', and continuing 'I am not aware if you know Mr. Pentland, the author of Murray's handbook on Rome, he acts as our guide here, & does not forget to show us everything that is most worth seeing during my short stay here'. Annotated at the head of the first page by Lord de Ros, 'The Prince of Wales on my sending him Forsyth on Italy'. Together with a vintage unsigned carte-de-visite photograph, the sepia albumen print by Mayall of London depicting the Prince seated in a full length pose at a writing desk. Photographer's imprint to the lower mount and verso. Some very light, extremely minor discoloration to the upper left corner of the first page of the letter, not affecting the text or signature. British Soldier & Politician who served as a Gentleman Usher to Queen Victoria (1836-39) and Captain of the Yeoman of the Guard (1852, 1858-59). Prince Edward spent an educational trip in Rome in the first few months of 1859 before spending the summer studying at the University of Edinburgh.

Signed ('Elizabeth R') by the Queen in blue fountain pen ink with her name alone and signed ('Philip') by Prince Philip in blue fountain pen ink, also adding the date 1955 in his hand. Both signatures appear directly beneath the image and a printed greeting appears opposite. With a gold embossed crown to the front cover. Some light overall age wear and a few minor stains, one only very slightly affecting the conclusion of the Queen's signature. About VG

A good collection of original vintage unsigned 8 x 10 press photographs and smaller relating to Churchill, his family and career, largely covering the post-World War II period although some earlier, including images of him delivering speeches at Alexandra Park and other venues, with various other world leaders, politicians and individuals including King George VI & Queen Elizabeth, Charles de Gaulle, B. L. Montgomery, Josip Tito, Jan Smuts, Harold Macmillan, Anthony Eden, Lord Beaverbrook, Bernard Baruch etc.; in his study at Chartwell (one photograph showing his desk upon which appear family photographs and busts of Nelson and Napoleon); shaking hands with a patient outside the Prince of Wales hospital in Cardiff (1948); observing an artillery shoot at Florence (1944); at his grandson’s wedding party at Hyde Park Gate (with his cat, Jock, resting on his lap); at the christening of his grandson in 1952; in the uniforms of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and Knight of the Garter; waving from the balcony of the Ministry of Health on the occasion of VE Day; with his wife, Clementine, on the occasion of their Golden Wedding anniversary; returning home from hospital following treatment for a fracture; painting outdoors at Gardonne in Italy; feeding a lion at London Zoo etc. The majority of the photographs have the original printed captions neatly affixed to the verso along with various credit stamps etc. (Camera Press Ltd., Associated Press Ltd., PA- Reuter, Kemsley Picture Service etc., a few also taken from images by Vivienne and Walter Stoneman). NAPOLEON III: (1808-1873) Emperor of the French 1852-70, the nephew and heir of Napoleon I. First President of France 1848-52, therefore holding the distinction of being the first titular president and the last monarch of France. A.L.S., Napoleon Louis Bonaparte, one page, 8vo, Paris, 8th October 1840, to the bankers Messrs. Macaire & Co., in French. The Prince sends instructions to his correspondents to 'sell all my shares from the 1832 Austrian loan in their possession' and to return the proceeds to Monsieur Bure, further adding that they should proceed to give Bure 'all the support he would need for the management of my properties in Switzerland'. Together with Eugenie de Montijo (1826-1920) Empress Consort of the French 1853-71, wife of Emperor Napoleon III. A.L.S., Eugenie, on two sides of a correspondence card, n.p., 2nd August 1903, to Miss. Somerset, in French. The Empress returns some letters concerning Colonel Scott to her correspondent and further remarks 'I visited the cemetery myself, and I prayed next to him. Your flowers were placed on his grave, along with the little note that you wrote. You have lost, together with us, a good and loyal friend'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by the Empress. Also including an interesting selection of vintage unsigned photographs and a few pieces of printed ephemera etc., relating to Napoleon III and Eugenie de Montijo, including carte-de-visite photographs (6; four of which depict Napoleon III in various poses, one lying in state; photographers include W & D Downey, Disderi etc.) and a number of other original photographs of various sizes, a few postcards etc., most relating to the Empress and her death (several depicting her coffin in the crypt of The Abbey at Farnborough where it remained until a red marble sarcophagus had been made), invitation to the funeral of the Empress at The Abbey, Farnborough on 'Tuesday next, the 20th [July, 1920] 11am' (bearing the name of Miss. FitzRoy Somerset to the verso) etc. Several of the photographs are annotated to the verso in the hand of a previous owner. Some age wear, FR to generally G to about VG, 25
FERDINAND I: (1861-1948) Tsar of Bulgaria 1887-1918. Vintage signed sepia postcard photograph of Ferdinand I in a head and shoulders pose wearing a ceremonial uniform, sash and medals. Signed twice, in both English and Bulgarian, in bold black fountain pen ink to a clear area of the background and dated 1933 in his hand. VG
ROOSEVELT THEODORE: (1858-1919) American President 1901-09. Nobel Peace Prize winner, 1906. An ink signature ('Theodore Roosevelt', as President) on a slim oblong 8vo portion removed from the conclusion of a letter, with two lines of typed text, in part, 'With regards to Mrs. Kipling, and renewed thanks, believe me…..' and the typed name and address of Roosevelt's correspondent, Rudyard Kipling at Bateman's, Burwash, Sussex, at the foot. Accompanied by the slim oblong 8vo printed letterhead of the White House, Washington, removed from the same letter and with the typed annotation 'Personal'. An unusual association piece between two Nobel Laureates. Together with Harry S. Truman (1884-1972) American President 1945-53. Vintage signed 4 x 3 sepia magazine photograph of Truman standing in a full length pose conducting the Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra at a fund raising concert on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the orchestra. Signed by Truman with his name alone to the image. All three pieces are laid down and show signs of glue staining, most evident on Truman's image and also affecting his signature. FR to G, 3 Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) English Author, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1907. Sadly, the content of the letter from Roosevelt to Kipling is now lost, although they are known to have corresponded and a later letter from Roosevelt to Kipling, dated 3rd October 1914, is to be found in the archives of the Library of Congress manuscript division. Both men lost sons during World War I, although it is clear from the date of the present signature (between 1901-09 whilst Roosevelt was in the White House) that the two were acquainted with each other before their losses.
LOUIS JOE: (1914-1981) American Boxer, World Heavyweight Champion 1937-49. Vintage signed 8 x 10 colour magazine photograph of Louis standing in a three quarter length boxing pose. Signed in bold blue ink with his name alone across a light area of the background. Matted in cream and framed and glazed in a modern black and gold coloured frame to an overall size of 12 x 14.5. VG

Signed ('Emil Jannings') in bold black fountain pen ink with his name alone to the lower border. VG
ROBINSON EDWARD G.: (1893-1973) American Actor, Academy Award winner. A good vintage signed 8 x 10 photograph of Robinson standing in a three quarter length pose, withdrawing a pistol from his suit, in costume as Caesar Enrico 'Rico' Bandello from the classic gangster film Little Caesar (1931). Signed by Robinson in dark fountain pen ink to a clear area of the background. Annotated in ink in the hand of an unidentified collector to the upper and lower borders, seemingly indicating that the signature was obtained in person at the Albee Theatre in Brooklyn on 18th August 1931. Signed photographs of Robinson in costume from one of his most famous roles are scarce and desirable. Some light surface and corner creasing and a few small pinholes to the upper white border, G Little Caesar made Robinson a major film star overnight and is considered to have been his breakthrough role.
SINATRA FRANK: (1915-1998) American Singer and Actor, Academy Award winner. Vintage signed and inscribed sepia 7 x 9 photograph of Sinatra in a half length pose. Signed in bold, dark fountain pen ink across a clear area at the head of the image, ‘For Prince Francis Hohenlohe, With All Good Wishes, Frank Sinatra’. Very slightly neatly trimmed, otherwise VG

KEYSTONE KOPS: A wonderful vintage multiple signed and inscribed 10 x 8 photograph by four members of Mack Sennett’s silent film slapstick comedy team the Keystone Kops individually, comprising Chester Conklin (1886-1971, ‘To Lovely “Lillian” from one policeman to another, Chester Conklin’), Snub Pollard (1889-1962, ‘To Lillian, Sincerely, Snub Pollard’), Hank Mann (1888-1971, originator of the idea for the Keystone Kops; ‘Kind wishes to Lillian, Hank Mann’) and Al St. John (1892-1963, ‘Yours for fun, Al St. John’ and additionally signed by him to the lower border ‘We will split in two for you, Al’). Also signed and inscribed by an unidentified show girl dancer (?) Gloria Randall (‘To Lillian from Gloria Randall’). The image depicts the four comic actors standing together in a row in full length poses, each wearing their policeman’s uniform costumes and holding Randall by her legs as she lifts her large frilled dress to reveal her black stockings and underwear. Signed by each in fountain pen inks to clear areas of the image. Some very slight, extremely minor smudging to the last few letters of Mann’s signature. SMITH ALEXIS: (1921-1993) Canadian-born American Actress. Vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of Smith seated in a half length pose. Accompanied by the original Warner Bros. envelope postmarked at Burbank, California. Together with Barbara Stanwyck (1907-1990) American Actress, Academy Award winner. Two vintage signed sepia 5 x 7 photographs of the actress depicting her in different head and shoulders poses. Both are signed in bold blue fountain pen ink to clear areas at the base of the images. HARLOW JEAN: (1911-1937) American Actress and Sex Symbol. An excellent vintage signed 10 x 13 photograph of Harlow seated in a full length pose wearing a plain black dress. Photograph by Clarence Sinclair Bull and bearing his blindstamp to the lower white border and his Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer credit stamp to the verso. A typed caption lightly affixed to the verso indicates that the photograph dates from the time of The Secret Six (1931), an early gangster movie in which the actress starred as Anne Courtland. Signed in bold black fountain pen ink to a clear area of the background and dated 4th June 1936 in her hand. Harlow has further added a brief sentiment in her hand, 'May yoeur (sic) life be happy always!' to a light area at the base of the image. Authentic signed photographs of Harlow are extremely rare - as the greeting on this photograph illustrates Harlow was only semi-literate and the vast majority of autographs were signed by her mother. A few light surface and corner creases, otherwise VG Provenance: The present photograph was originally in the collection of Jimmy Starr (1904-1990, American Screenwriter of the 1930s and later a Hollywood columnist) and bears his stamp to the verso, and was later included in the Alan Robinson collection of cinema autographs (IAA Ltd., lot 884, 29th September 2007).
MONROE MARILYN: (1926-1962) American Actress and Sex Symbol. Vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of Monroe in a head and shoulders pose in costume as Roberta Stevens from the film Love Nest (1951). Signed 'To Howard, luck and love, Marilyn Monroe' to the centre of the image. The signature and inscription, originally in ball point ink, are extremely faded beyond practically all legibility and can only now be seen when held at the correct angle as a result of the indentations left on the image by the pen used by Monroe. WOOD NATALIE: (1938-1981) American Actress. A good, early vintage signed and inscribed 7 x 9 photograph of the teenage Wood in an attractive head and shoulders pose. The original Warner Bros. publicity portrait was issued for the film Rebel Without a Cause (1955) in which Wood starred in the role of Judy alongside James Dean as Jim Stark. Signed in bold turquoise fountain pen ink across a light area of the background, ‘To dear Charles! Wishing you success and happiness always! Sincerely, Natalie Wood’. Signed photographs of Wood associated with this cult film, at an early stage in her career, are extremely rare and desirable. Slightly irregularly trimmed to the white borders and with one very minor crease to the lower left corner, only very minimally affecting one letter of the signature, G Natalie Wood was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her performance in Rebel Without a Cause.

Vintage signed 8 x 10 photograph of Miller standing in a three quarter length pose playing his trombone. Photograph by James J. Kriegsmann and issued as a publicity portrait for Glenn Miller and his orchestra by Bluebird Recording Artists. Signed by Miller with his name alone in fountain pen ink to a largely clear area of the image. An ink annotation in the hand of a collector to the verso indicates that the photograph was signed on 29th February 1942. FITZGERALD ELLA: (1917-1996) American Jazz Vocalist. Vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of Fitzgerald in a head and shoulders pose. Photograph by John Engstead of Beverly Hills and bearing his blindstamp to the verso. Signed in blue ink across a light area at the base of the image with a warm inscription, 'Rip you funny valentine, sweet comic valentine, you make me smile with your heart, smile, Ella'. A light crease runs horizontally through the centre of the image and with a few other minor surface and corner creases. Fitzgerald's signature and inscription are a little light in places, although legible. G Fitzgerald's inscription on the present photograph incorporates lyrics from the Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart song My Funny Valentine which became a popular jazz standard and was recorded by Fitzgerald.
PRESLEY ELVIS: (1935-1977) American Rock ‘n’ Roll Singer. Vintage blue ink signature (‘Elvis Presley’) and date, 1960, in his hand on a 12mo card. The signature is slightly faded although legible and with uniform age toning to the card. Matted in brown alongside two colour images of Presley and framed and glazed in a modern wooden frame to an overall size of 17.5 x 13.5. Together with ‘Colonel’ Tom Parker (1909-1997) Dutch-born Manager of Elvis Presley. Black ink signature (‘Colonel’) on an envelope from the Las Vegas Hilton hotel, bearing two identical colour United States postage stamps featuring an image of Presley and post marked at Las Vegas, Nevada, 8th January 1993. Matted in dark green beneath a reproduction image of Parker and Presley and framed and glazed in a plain black frame to an overall size of 12 x 16. G to VG, 2

WAGNER RICHARD: (1813-1883) German Composer. A good vintage signed sepia carte-de-visite photograph by Wagner, the sepia albumen print by Franz Hanfstaengl of Berlin depicting Wagner in a profile half length pose wearing his velvet suit, cravat and beret. Signed ('Richard Wagner') with his name alone in ink to the lower photographer's mount. With the photographer's imprint to the verso, which is further annotated in bold black fountain pen ink in an unidentified hand indicating that the photograph was received on 15th September 1893 from [the antiquarian bookseller] B. Seligsberg of Bayreuth, 'Wagner's own collector of curios etc., who, in letter of same date, absolutely guarantees the authenticity of the autograph'. Some light, very minor age wear, otherwise VG
TCHAIKOVSKY PYOTR ILYICH: (1840-1893) Russian Composer. A good vintage signed and inscribed sepia cabinet photograph by Tchaikovsky, the image depicting the composer seated in a half length pose. Signed in bold, dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount and with a three line inscription in Cyrillic to Margarita Aleksandrovna Eikhenvald, dated 11th November 1891, in his hand. With a small blind embossed coat of arms to the lower photographer's mount. Traces of former mounting to the verso and with a few vertical and horizontal cracks to the image and mount (professionally repaired and only especially visible when viewed at an angle). A rare signed portrait with a good association, G Margarita Aleksandrovna Eikhenvald (1866- ) Russian Vocalist. Eikhenvald was born in Moscow, the daughter of the noted harpist Ida Eikhenvald. The singer worked with the Bolshoi Theatre (1899-1901) and the Tiflis Opera in Georgia (1901-17). Following the Russian Revolution in 1917 she emigrated to France and was living there in the 1940s.
RACHMANINOFF SERGEI: (1873-1943) Russian Composer and Pianist. Vintage signed sepia postcard photograph of Rachmaninoff in a head and shoulders pose. With a printed caption and date, 1918, to the lower edge. Signed ('Sergei Rachmaninoff') in fountain pen ink with his name alone across a clear area at the centre of the image. DEMPSEY JACK: (1895-1983) American Boxer, World Heavyweight Champion 1919-26. Vintage signed and inscribed 10 x 8 photograph of Dempsey standing in a full length pose in the neutral corner of a boxing ring as his opponent, Gene Tunney, receives the infamous 'long count' from referee Dave Barry during the seventh round of the rematch between the two heavyweights at Soldier Field in Chicago on 22nd September 1927. Signed by Dempsey in bold black ink across a clear area of the image and dated 1966 in his hand. Together with a second vintage signed and inscribed 10 x 8 photograph by Dempsey, the image depicting a different action scene from the same fight as Dempsey stands above Tunney, having just floored the heavyweight champion for the first time in his career. Signed by Dempsey in bold black ink across a light area at the centre of the image and dated 25th December 1966 in his hand. Accompanied by the original envelope signed by Dempsey in the return address panel in the upper left corner. Also including a brief A.L.S., Jack Dempsey, to the verso of a colour picture postcard featuring a reproduction of James Montgomery Flagg's image depicting Dempsey knocking out Jess Willard to become World Heavyweight Champion, n.p. RENOIR PIERRE-AUGUSTE: (1841-1919) French Impressionist Artist. A good vintage signed 5.5 x 11 photograph by Renoir, being a reproduction of one of the artist's paintings depicting a tree lined country lane. Signed ('Renoir') in black ink by the artist to the lower border. Also signed by the Mayor of Cagnes beneath a short statement in French confirming the authenticity of Renoir's signature on the original painting, dated Cagnes, 13th January 1917. The lower border also features the Mayor's official circular purple ink rubber stamp. HUXLEY ALDOUS (1894-1963) English Writer. An unusual vintage signed and inscribed 6 x 7 photograph of Huxley seated in a half length pose admiring a figurine which he holds in his hands. Signed in bold, dark fountain pen ink to the lower paper mount ‘For RHN. Looking at Smokey’s Madonna, Aldous Huxley’ and dated 1963 in his hand. A couple of very light, extremely minor creases to the mount, VG The present photograph was presented to the California based artist Richard H. ‘Smokey’ Newton by Huxley in the same year as the writer’s death. Newton had served as a Coast Guard during World War II.
