DE GAULLE YVONNE: (1900-1979) Wife of Charles de Gaulle, President of the French Republic 1959-69. Well-known for her quote “The Presidency is temporary, but the family is permanent”. Yvonne and Charles de Gaulle escaped an assassination attempt in 1962 when they were attacked by machine gun fire. Yvonne was reputed to be very discreet; as such, despite numerous appearances, she never gave any radio or televised interviews, and the broader public never learned the sound of her voice. Rare and very intimate A.L.S., `Y. de Gaulle´, two pages, 8vo, mourning paper, Colombey les deux Eglises, Haute-Marne, 15th February 1948, in French. The present letter was written during the mourning of their daughter Anne, stating `Nous avons été profondément touches, mon mari et moi, par votre bonne lettre. Nous sommes si tristes de ne plus avoir notre petite fille… Sans doute Dieu a-t-il besoin de cette chère petite âme si pure  pour mieux protéger le Général dans l´oeuvre qu´il a entreprise.´ (Translation: `We were deeply touched, my husband and I, by your kind letter. We are so sad not to have our little girl anymore… No doubt God needs this dear little soul so pure to better protect the General in the task he has undertaken´) The letter has been very neatly and lightly affixed only to the left border to a larger card. VG Charles and Yvonne de Gaulle had three children, Philippe, Elizabeth and Anne (1928-1948) who was born with Down syndrome and died at the age of 20. The present letter was written nine days after she passed away.

LORRE PETER: (1904-1964) Hungarian-American actor who starred in Casablanca (1942). D.S., Peter Lorre, two pages, 4to, Beverly Hills, California, 22nd December 1938, on the printed stationery of Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation. The typescript document takes the form of a letter addressed to the advertising agency Ruthrauff & Ryan Inc. from William Goetz in which Twentieth Century-Fox agree to Peter Lorre's engagement to perform on the Al Jolson Lifebuoy radio programme to be broadcast from a studio in Hollywood, California, on 27th December 1938, and stating, in part, 'It is understood and agreed that you or your sponsor shall be permitted to use the name of the artist and his photographs in any manner or means that you may deem commensurate with the dignity of the artist, in connection with the advertising of the aforesaid broadcast…..provided, however, that your use of the same as aforesaid shall not in any way be an endorsement of the products of your sponsor…..It is understood and agreed that you are to pay as full compensation for the artist's services rendered hereunder the sum of One Thousand Five Hundred Dollars ($1500)……It is understood and agreed that in connection with both the broadcast and rebroadcast aforesaid, you will cause the following announcement to be made during the course thereof: “Peter Lorre, who has just completed his motion picture 'Mr. Moto in Puerto Rico' appears through the courtesy of Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation”.' Signed by the American film producer and studio executive William Goetz (1903-1969) at the conclusion in his capacity as Vice President of Twentieth Century-Fox and countersigned by Lorre and a representative of Ruthrauff & Ryan Inc. indicating their approval and acceptance of the agreement. A couple of very minor staple holes to the upper left corner of each page, otherwise VG Al Jolson's comedy and musical variety radio programme The Lifebuoy Show was broadcast on Tuesday evenings from 1936-39 and featured many guest stars as well as regular appearances from Martha Raye. The show was sponsored by Lifebuoy Soap who engaged the services of the Ruthrauff & Ryan advertising agency. Ruthrauff and Ryan coined the term 'B.O.' for its Lifebuoy ads to solve the problem of readers being offended by the term 'body odour'. A modern compact disc recording of Peter Lorre's guest appearance on The Lifebuoy Show on 27th December 1938 is included in the present lot.

KOESTLER ARTHUR: (1905-1983) Hungarian-born British author and journalist. A correspondence collection of ten T.Ls.S., A. Koestler, each one page, 8vo, Montpelier Square, London, November 1978 - September 1980, to [Adalbert] Reif. Koestler largely writes concerning his works and essays, in part, 'Your wife has certainly done an excellent transcribing job, and you have done a good job in editing…..The Sperber Trilogy arrived safely a few days ago. Many thanks. Re “Reflections on Hanging”: a much shortened version of this book is to be found in the Danube edition of “The Trail of the Finosaur” (sic), in which this shortened version is included' (10th November 1978), 'Re “Diebe in der Nacht”. I wrote a postscript to the Danube edition of this novel (Hutchinson, 1965) which I think puts the book into historical perspective. It could be shortened a little and used either as a preface or as a postscript to the new German edition' (14th November 1978), 'Regarding the title, I quite like “Rebellion in a Vacuum”. Should I have a better idea, I'll let you know' (3rd February 1979), 'I agree with your suggestion to publish the essay volume in your own Europa Verlag. The details, as you say, can be settled with Anthony Gornall. However, I would suggest to publish the volume in 1981 and to postpone “Ein Mann springt in die Tiefe” for the next year, because the essays are more topical than the novel. As for Der Stern, I hope you will forgive me for not wanting an interview for the time being. My health has not been too good lately and I have had to refuse all sorts of requests from television, radio and the Press' (8th May 1979), 'I quite like the S. Fischer short story idea…..The story in Harpers is the same which appeared in The Times, but I would like the Harpers typography to be used, as it makes it easier for the reader. But there is one essential condition: I must see the German translations in typescript before they go into galleys, because the stories have that dry English irony which often gets lost in translation' (26th October 1979), '….I have never heard of the American anthology that you mention….There must be some misunderstanding' (25th November 1979), '….concerning the collection of essays to be published by Scherz. I agree with your selection, with the following exceptions. (1) “Return Trip to Nirvana” (Kostproben des Irrsinns) appears twice on your list. The second time as “Adventure in Insanity”. I think it should be left out from Part I. (2) By eliminating this duplication you will have gained some space, and I suggest using it by including two more essays from The Heel of Achilles: “Science and Parascience” and “Science and Reality”. (3) There are also two vital footnotes lacking in “Kostproben des Irrsinns”…..' (28th January 1980), 'How silly of Scherz not to have noticed their blunder, But as you ask my advice, there seems to me no point in rubbing their nose into it, since it is too late to undo the damage' (21st September 1980). Together with two T.Ls.S. by Koestler's third wife, Cynthia Jefferies, each one page, 8vo, Montpelier Square, London, 18th January 1979 & 24th January 1980, also both to Reif, replying on behalf of her husband and making a reference to The Pathology of Memory. Each of the letters have two file holes to the left edges, none affecting the text or signatures. VG, 12Adelbert Reif (1936-2013) German Journalist & Publisher.

Two T.Ls.S, Mountbatten of Burma, both with holograph salutations and subscriptions, each one page, 8vo, Hampshire, 27th February 1969 & 30th June 1969, to Frank Harcourt-Munning. Mountbatten states, in part, 'War on Want is doing a really wonderful job for the Gandhi Centenary Committee and I don't know what we would have done if you hadn't come along...' (27th February 1969), 'Professor Catlin is an old friend and I enclose a letter of introduction to Mr David Stinson, the Vice-President of Westminster College at Fulton, who personally made all the arrangements with me for my visit...' (30th June 1969), together with two T.Ls.S. by Patricia Knatchbull, 2nd Countess Mountbatten of Burma (1924-2017) British Peeress, elder daughter of Mountbatten, each two pages, 8vo, in part, '..thank you so very much for the really wonderful evening you organized last Wednesday for the presentation of the World Humanity Awards for both my parents... Although it was decided that "Mountabatten Memorial Lecture" would indeed cover both my parents, it now does seem to me that your original alternative suggestion of "Louis and Edwina Mountabtten Memorial Lecture" is really the more appropriate name...unless we keep the name "Edwina" people may forget that the lecture is in her memory as well as in that of my father' (25th November 1980), 'I was so very interested to hear of the way the Marr-Munning Trust is supporting a memorial tribute to my mother in Tunis and...to my father in Bethany... Your idea of further establishing an annual tribute on television or radio to my parents is of course a most interesting one' (19th January 1981), also including a T.L.S. two pages, 8vo, by the Private Secretary to the Countess Mountbatten of Burma, discussing a speech, 8th December 1959, and a selection of printed ephemera and letters etc relating to the death of Louis Mountbatten and the establishing of tributes and memorials etc. G to VG, 14
