Accordingly, we shall have no right from and after this date to use the title and name “Philip Marlowe” and/or the character known as “Philip Marlow” unless we subsequently acquire such right pursuant to another agreement or agreements. PIERCE JOHN R.: (1910-2002) American engineer and author of science fiction who worked extensively in the fields of radio communication, microwave technology and computer music. Pierce coined the term transistor. A good T.L.S., J. R. Pierce, one page, 4to, Murray Hill, New Jersey, 31st January 1956, to Henri Corbiere, on the printed stationery of Bell Telephone Laboratories. Pierce responds to his correspondent's enquiries in four numbered paragraphs, in part, 'I became known in science entirely through my work at the Bell Telephone Laboratories. This has been my only source of income. I was educated largely at the expense of my parents, although I received some university support during my graduate years. I think that my work leading to the “Pierce gun” is most widely known. I have also become known through my work on traveling-wave tubes. I do not consider any of my work a masterpiece. Rather, I believe that I have done a good deal of analytical work in the field of high frequency vacuum tubes which has been in the forefront of contemporary work……Jacques-Louis David….is perhaps not one of the great geniuses of painting but his pictures are always professionally expert. If I can approach such expertness in my field of engineering, I feel I will have accomplished enough'. A letter of interesting content. VG

Lot 827

TERMAN FREDERICK: (1900-1982) American professor and academic administrator, widely credited (along with William Shockley) as being the father of Silicon Valley. T.L.S., F E Terman, one page, 4to, California, 13th January 1948, to Henri Corbiere, on the printed stationery of the School of Engineering at Stanford University. Terman responds to his correspondent's enquiries and states, in part, 'My entrance into scientific work was relatively easy because, during my last years of work for the Doctor's Degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under Dr. Bush, I was offered, and accepted, an instructorship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. However, I never served under this appointment since I spent most of the next year in bed……What difficulties there were revolved around the fact that, for a number of years, it was necessary to conserve strength and limit my activities as a result of this illness…..from about 1930 on, a substantial portion of my total income has been derived from sources other than the university, although largely based upon scientific work, such as writing of books……I consider that the most important work I have done is incorporated in the two books Radio Engineering and Radio Engineers' Handbook. In addition…..I organised and directed the Radio Research Laboratory, Harvard University, during the war which developed the countermeasures that were used by the United States Armed Forces against enemy radar. This was one of the largest war research activities in electronics'. A letter of good content. One very light, minor stain to the lower edge, only very slightly touching the signature, otherwise VG

Lindbergh, one page, 4to, Scotts Cove, Darien, Connecticut, 14th June 1967, to Colonel Louis Castex. Lindbergh states that he had departed the United States in April for a trip to Europe and continues to explain 'At that time I expected to return the first week in May. When I was in Amsterdam at the end of April, a phone call with New York resulted in my going directly to Viet Nam from Europe, and remaining in south east Asia throughout the month of May. During this time I was travelling almost constantly and without much pre-arranged schedule. For two weeks in Indonesia I was out of even radio communication. I made no attempt to have mail forwarded after I left the United States', giving this as the reason that he has only just read his correspondent's considerate letter and apologising for the late reply and for not having been able to accept an invitation. Some light staining and minor age toning to two edges, not affecting the text or signature. Montgomery writes concerning his travel plans and other matters, in part, 'It is with very great regret that I must tell you that I will not be able to visit Gstaad this year. As you know we have in England certain restrictions on foreign travel and currency and that will prevent me journeying to Switzerland. I am very sorry, especially as I will not now be able to present my cup for Ski Jumping on 22 February. I would be grateful if you will make it generally known that, because of the restrictions in force in England, I will not be able to pay my usual visit…..I suggest you should get an announcement put in the Press and also put out on the Swiss Radio' (6th January 1948), 'I fear I am terribly busy just at present and will not be able to see you for more than a very few minutes. If you come to the War Office at 9.30 A.M. on Friday next, 19 March, I could have a few words with you' (16th March 1948), 'I have a young friend in Switzerland and he often writes to me. Mountbatten further writes 'I see from your letter that you wrote the English version of the pamphlet you enclosed. I am astonished to note that no effort has been made to translate your English into French, for the French version appears to be entirely different in layout and phrases. I also regret to see that no attempt has been made to produce the diagrammatic figures with French titling in the French text. In fact anybody who understands both languages would be thoroughly lost trying to compare one version with the other. I wonder what the explanation is.' Accompanied by the original envelope.
