Karel Anthony Nel (South African, born 1955)Cosmos inscribed 'Karel Nel/ 2011/ Cosmos: 259 Degree Field' (verso)sprayed pigment on bonded fibre paper55 x 210cm (21 5/8 x 82 11/16in).Footnotes:ProvenancePurchased at Art First, 2011.A private collection, UK.In 2004, Karel Nel was appointed as the resident artist on COSMOS - an ambitious project to map a two degree field of the universe. Working alongside a team of astronomers, Nel produced a series of pieces that were informed by the images and data collected from radio, x-ray, infrared and optical telescopes. This piece explores one of Nel's chief preoccupations: the visual and scientific conventions of representing vanishing points. He is fascinated by the way a vanishing point can determine a focal point, sidelining other objects to the periphery.Nel's medium is highly unusual, incorporating pastel, ochre, volcanic glass, sand and dust on a background of bonded fibre fabric. In 2012, Nel participated in the major exhibition African Cosmos, Stellar Arts: African Cultural Astronomy from Antiquity to the Present at the Smithsonian Museum of African Art.Nel's aesthetic fusion of scientific phenomena and artistic abstraction has been described by the South African poet, Stephen Watson, as an intellectual and spiritual investigation:'follow(ing) the trajectory of an inner journey, trawling amidst the rich multiplicity of the world's cultural traditions, their rites and symbols, searching for that imagery which might connect our conscious lives with the deepest spiritual potential within ourselves.' Rare WW2 Luftwaffe Ace Major Heinrich Ehrler (14th September 1917 KIA 4th April 1945) Knights Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves. Ehrler is credited with 208 aerial victories achieved in over 400 combat missions, 199 of his victories were on the Eastern Front (1942 44) with 9 victories of the Western Front (1945). On 1st August 1944 Ehrler was appointed Geschwaderkommodore of JG 5 in Norway which included responsibilities for aerial protection of the German Battleship Tirpitz moored at Tromso. On 12th November 1944, the RAF launched Operation Catechism and 29 Lancaster bombers of 617 Squadron (The Dam Busters) & 9 Squadron successfully sank the Tirpitz using Tall Boy bombs designed by Barnes Wallis. Despite being detected by German Radar the subsequent confusion and breakdown in German communications meant that the FW190s of JG5 failed to intercept the bombers and prevent the loss of the Tirpitz. Ehrler had scrambled JG5 but suffered a radio failure in the air and the bombers could not be found. Following the loss of the Tirpitz Admiral Donitz pushed for Ehrler to be court martialled. He was stripped of his command and sentenced to 3 years and 2 months Festungshaft (Honourable Imprisonment), probably being saved from the death penalty due to his exceptional combat service record (199 victories). After an appeal Ehrler was exonerated, Hitler officially pardoned him on 1st March 1945, his rank reinstated, and he was reassigned to a JG 7 fighter squadron in Germany. Ehrler claimed a further 8 aerial victories while at JG 7 flying the new Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter during the Defence of the Reich, actions that also made Heinrich Ehrler a rare Jet Ace. Ehrler died on 4th April 1945, having shot down two B 17 bombers and being out of ammunition, it is believed that he deliberately crashed his damaged Me 262 into a third bomber. The words of his last radio transmission being remembered as, Theo, Heinrich here. Have just shot down two bombers. No more ammunition. I am going to ram. Auf Wiedersehen, see you in Valhalla. A rare, signed Hoffman card approx 14 cm x 9cm bearing Ehrlers original wartime signature supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity. Good Condition. All autographs are genuine hand signed and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £4.99, EU from £6.99, Rest of World from £8.99.

Su Blackewell Miniature Penguins, 2020 Paper on Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Su Blackwell is an artist based in the South Coast of England and working predominantly within the realm of paper. Paper has been used for communication since its invention; either between humans or in an attempt to communicate with the spirit world. Su employs this delicate, accessible medium and uses irreversible, destructive processes to reflect on the precariousness of the world we inhabit and the fragility of our life, dreams and ambitions. Su expresses her unique art style through book sculptures (sculptures using books as the medium) and through themes such as fairy tales and folklore. Her pieces visualize the poetic space hidden within the pages of old tales; the sculptures created by cutting pages of old books are three-dimensional pieces of art that lead us to the world of imagination. Su has exhibited her exquisite sculptures around the World. Her illustrated book of fairy tales 'The Fairytale Princess', published by Thames & Hudson was re-released in 2015. Su has designed art fabric for Liberty London, and her illustrations have contributed to regular columns in 'Intelligent Life Magazine' and 'Harper's Bazaar UK'. Su has also turned her hand to art-direction for commercials, for clients such as Volvo and British Airways, and to theatre set-design. Lot 57

From the estate of Adolf Isenthal, an early and unusual form, possibly a prototype, of what appears to be a loose coupler from a crystal radio, constructed on an oak frame, the main large primary coil with copper wire wrapped around small wooden pegs on the outside, the secondary smaller coil constructed similarly but on a helical thread turned via the large wheel at the end, the main winding has a selector with stepped positions on the coil, tubes made of an early plastic material, main supports made from Vulcanite with brass fittings, faults and damage (AF). Adolf Isenthal, was an electrical engineer who immigrated to Britain in 1889 from Germany. He was an early supplier of X-ray equipment and, in 1898 along with and Charles Potzler set up ‘Isenthal, Potzler & Co.’ at 85 Mortimer Street, London. The company survived until 1925 when it absorbed by the Dubilier Condenser Co. Isenthal also supplied Guglielmo Marconi with electrical equipment.
