(Civil) Officer’s 2nd type breast badge, silver-gilt; King’s Police and Fire Service Medal, G.VI.R., 1st issue, for Distinguished Service (Robert Mitchell. O.B.E. Chief Const. Kincardineshire Constab.); Jubilee 1935 (Chief Constable R. Mitchell.) contemporarily engraved naming; Coronation 1937 (Chief Constable R. Mitchell, O.B.E.) contemporarily engraved naming, good very fine and better (4) £400-£500 --- O.B.E. London Gazette 11 May 1937: Robert Mitchell, Esq., Chief Constable of Kincardineshire. K.P.F.S.M. London Gazette 12 June 1947: Robert Mitchell, O.B.E., Chief Constable, Kincardineshire Constabulary. Robert Mitchell was born in 1883 and joined the Aberdeenshire Constabulary in July 1902, where he served for five years, latterly as a Clerk in the County Chief Constable’s Office. He transferred to the Ayr Burgh Police in August 1907, and was promoted Sergeant and Court Officer that same year. He was subsequently advanced to Chief Clerk and then Confidential Clerk to the Chief Constable, and was finally promoted Inspector in charge of the uniform branch in February 1923. Mitchell was appointed Chief Constable of Kincardineshire in March 1924, and served in this role for the next 25 years. During his period in charge of the Kincardineshire Constabulary he was responsible for ensuring that the force had their own patrol cars and radio communication, when other forces had been equipped with bicycles. He was created an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the Coronation Honours’ List in 1937, and was awarded the King’s Police and Fire Service Medal in the 1947 Birthday Honours’ List. He retired, following the amalgamation of Kincardineshire into the Scottish North-Eastern Counties Constabulary, in May 1949. Sold with the original Bestowal Document for the O.B.E., in named Central Chancery envelope, together with 10 Downing Street and Central Chancery letters regarding the award and investiture; copies of the recipient’s Application and Testimonials for the positions of Chief Constable of both Ayrshire ands Fife (both applications unsuccessful); a large photograph of the members of the Chief Constables (Scotland) Association 1945; a portrait photograph of the recipient; and other ephemera.

De Valois & Fonteyn in Dublin Autograph Book compiled by a Dublin theatregoer 1938-9, including signatures of the distinguished dancers Ninette de Valois (born in Co. Wicklow as Edris Stannus), Margot Fonteyn and Robert Helpmann, also other dancers, actors George Formby and Margaretta Scott, band leader Billy Cotton, comedian Jimmy O’Dea, radio host Joe Linnane, [Lord Mayor] Alfie Byrne (in English and Irish), and the great singer John Count McCormack. Some signatures on tipped in letters or photos. Ninette de Valois, born near Blessington in 1898, danced with Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes before setting up the Vic-Wells Ballet School in London, and later at the request of W.B. Yeats, the Abbey Theatre School of Ballet in Dublin. She invited Margot Fonteyn, then aged 14, to join Vic-Wells, where she danced with the Australian-born Robert Helpmann, becoming prima ballerina in 1935. The three signatures sum up a whole era in dance. With a printed menu for the Officers’ Dinner of the Irish Red Cross Association, Dublin Division, July 1943, 4pp, with about 20 signatures including the chairperson [Judge] Conor Maguire (later Chief Justice).  (1)

Single foolscap page, hand written critique by Seamus Heaney of the above volume: "It is one of the problems of trying to clarify the study of Celtic Art ... attracts the attention of sentimentalists and find itself linked with causes from Jacobitism to Art Nouveau. The Ossianic mists will never disperse ..."; Also included is part of a typed critique by Heaney of another book, one page: "It's an examination of the history and origin of words associated with nature, words associated with the earth and its processes and seasons, names of birds, beasts, flowers, plants, insects .. Namegiving is one of the archetypal roles played by Adam ... The story Genesis is short and resonant ..."; Also included are two postcards from Seamus Heaney to Kieran Sheedy, one from Detroit re documentary on John Field, Composer:"; Off to Philadelphia, not in the morning but in 10 minutes ... Hope Field was all right in the end ... "; The second postcard is from Dublin (1976) concerning documentary about the troubled first production of O'Casey's play 'The Plough and the Stars'; in 1926: "both Marie and I wanted to say how excellent - historical, perfect, unrepeatable we thought the O'Casey documentary to be ... ". Together with a Proof Copy of Patrick Piggott's book The Life and Music of John Field, 1782 - 1837, with scoring and correction possibly by Heaney. Provenance: Mr. Kieran Sheedy. In the early 1970's Seamus Heaney presented an R.T.E. radio book programme "Imprint" which was produced by K. Sheedy. They also broadcast a few radio documentaries, together, including one on composer John Field. Interesting collection.  (1)

1969 MG MGC GTCovering just over 51,000 miles in the hands of it’s three registered keepers, this C was subject to full restoration in the 1990’s and remains in, apparently, excellent condition throughout. Complete with photographic restoration record, expired MOT certificates and Heritage certificate which confirms that this example was originally supplied by University Motors, famed BMC tuners and suppliers. One of 176 cars marketed as “University Motors MG special edition” and one of the last “C”s to be produced. Just 3 owners with an indicated mileage of 51516 miles which is believed to be correct. Fully restored in 1990, this example remains in fine condition throughout.
