A Sir Cedric Hardwicke costume from The Hunchback of Notre DameRKO Radio Pictures, 1939. Designed by Walter Plunkett. Brown velvet full-length long-sleeved cloak with an additional burgundy and tan flocked undercloak sewn in, bearing an interior 'Western Costume Co.' label inscribed, 'Sir Cedric Hardwicke / 2[?]047' in black ink, with 'Harwick [sic]' written in black ink and a 'Western Costume Co.' stamp on the interior. This luxurious costume is evidence of RKO's sparing no expense for the sumptuous production based on the novel by Victor Hugo. Directed by William Dieterle and co-starring Charles Laughton and Maureen O'Hara, Hardwicke plays the wicked Frollo whose judgmental superiority and hypocrisy wreak havoc on Quasimodo and Esmeralda. Hardwicke wears the costume throughout much of the film, and his naturally regal bearing, the imposing design of this costume, and his superior performance make him the perfect villain of this piece; he ultimately meets his demise in this costume when he is thrown off the top of Notre Dame Cathedral by Quasimodo in the climactic end of the film. Accompanied by a DVD of the film.
A Christmas CarolMGM, 1938. U.S. one sheet poster, style C, linen-backed. The venerable Reginald Owen plays the part of Ebenezer Scrooge in this version of Charles Dickens' timeless classic. Lionel Barrymore, who had played the part of Scrooge annually on radio, was originally cast as the old miser when the arthritis that left him wheelchair-bound prevented him from taking the part. "Ballad of Easter Week" Behan (Brendan) Typescript (c.1951) by Brendan Behan of the republican ballad Who Fears to Speak of Easter Week, in eight verses, with corrections in Behan's hand. Attached to the two page typescript is a single page typed note from Behan to "Frank" (Francis McManus, novelist and broadcaster) regarding a proposed recording of the ballad for the popular 1950's Radio Éireann series The Ballad Makers' Saturday Night. Behan was a contributor of scripts and ballads to the show, including this incendiary version of the ballad commemorating the 1916 Rising which - as the note to McManus makes clear - Behan was keen to sing on air, as a typescript, w.a.f. Rare Unpublished LettersBy Flann O'Brien[O'Nolan (Brian)]: An important Archive of eight typed and ALs letters by Brian O'Nolan (Flann O'Brien/Myles na gCopaleen) and one letter by his wife Evelyn O'Nolan. The letters date from the period November 1956 to July 1960.This previously unpublished correspondence with producers Micheál Ó hAodha and James Plunkett (author of Strumpet City) deals with O'Nolan's broadcast work on Radio Éireann including his scripts Thirst, Flight and Cruiskeen Lawn and an adaptation of his novel At Swim Two Birds. The letters contain a lively mixture of O'Nolan's inventive ideas for various radio plays and panel-shows, plus more mundane matters related to payment for his broadcast work. Of particular note are three letters (March 1959 to March 1960), which outline O'Nolan's observations on the misuse and misunderstanding of words and the potential he sees for a radio show based on this concept. O'Nolan gives the word ULLAGE as an example which he says is mistakenly taken to refer to public house slops. In a letter dated 4 March, 1959, O'Nolan says;"My idea is to assemble a panel of three smart alecs and put questions like that to them ... the general plan - though never to be stated - is to show that important people are extremely ignorant, even illiterate. It is very cruel, but might make good entertainment."The correspondence also provides some insights into O'Nolan's domestic life at a time when he had retired from the Civil Service and was keen to generate other income from his writing. In one letter (26 March,1960), O'Nolan credits moving house from Belmont Avenue, Donnybrook to Stillorgan, Co. Dublin as the inspiration for a 30 minute playlet he has written (titled Moving Out?). The letter ( 22 November,1956) from his wife Evelyn, refers to an illness which required a hospital stay for O'Nolan. An Archive which highlights Brian O'Nolan's unbridled genius and his ambition to see his work broadcast in Ireland and abroad. The eight letters by O'Nolan all carry his strong and distinctive signature in ink, as typescript, w.a.f. (9). Provenance: Collection of Micheál Ó hAodha
