A CORAL, TURQUOISE AND DIAMOND BROOCHDesigned as a flowerhead set with oval-shaped corallium rubrum coral cabochon petals, marquise-shaped cabochon turquoise colour pistils accented with a trio of brilliant-cut diamonds, mounted in gold, length 3.8cm, width 4.7cmBorn in Milan in 1920 during the Interwar Period, Valeri's youth was permanently overshadowed by the looming threat of fascism and antisemitism. She solemnly recounts in Italian newspaper Il Corriere della Sera - "My youth started on April 25th (1945)" (The day of Liberation after World War II).Franca Valeri's extraordinary life and career spanned across two centuries and although, as she says, her early years were much defined by War, she did not allow this to stifle her dreams. After the war, determined to become an actress, Mrs Valeri moved to Rome to study acting. Despite being rejected by the Accademia di arti drammatiche, Valeri did not give up and went on to become an icon for an entire generation of women in cinematic comedy. Her characters provided a much-needed source of laughter in the grey, bleak Italian post-war years; and was particularly well-known for her notorious "Signorina snob" (Miss Snob) character. During the 50s, 60s and 70s, Valeri became a household name at home and abroad, working alongside the greats of the "Commedia all' Italiana", such as Alberto Sordi, Federico Fellini and Sofia Loren while developing close friendships with singers Maria Callas and Edith Piaf. A chameleonic talent, Valeri's work found different forms of expression as she moved across various mediums: performing in theatres as well as radio and TV. She was not only a performer but had a knack for the written word too, writing most of her lines and sketches. In the latter part of her career, she began directing lyrical theatre, however the passion for the theatre performance never left her and in her final years she often said that she would have liked to have returned to the theatre one last time.As was the case with most women in show business, Valeri was an avid jewellery collector, and had a close relationship with jewellery designer Nicola Capuano who had a shop in Via Condotti. As part of our May Auction, we are delighted to present a brooch from Mrs Franca Valeri's collection for sale. The brooch is designed in the shape of a flower, the five coral beads functioning as petals. Five small baguette-shaped turquoise interspersed between the beads, creating a pleasing colour palette along with the rich red of the coral. Finally, a spot of sparkle with three small diamond studs in the centre of the design to complete the composition. Fitting for a formidable woman that brought so much sparkle to the world during times of darkness.Condition Report: Coral: of red hue - all well matched in colourTurquoise colour stones: unsure if turquoises - all well matchedSome signs of gold oxidisation on the reverse of the broochMetal unmarked and untested - possibly 18KNormal signs of wear, overall in good condition
