SELLERS PETER: (1925-1980) British Comedian and Actor, a cast member of the British radio comedy programme The Goon Show. D.S., Peter Sellers, sixteen pages, folio, n.p. (Geneva, Switzerland?), 15th February 1967. The photocopied typed document is an original agreement made between Delegate Productions A.G. and Peter Sellers in which the actor agrees to play the part of Hrundi V. Bakshi in the film The Party, continuing to detail various clauses relating to the period of engagement, remuneration (the sum not specified, instead referred to as ‘the subject of a private agreement between Delegate and Mr. Sellers’ and to be paid in Swiss Francs), expenses and transportation (Delegate agreeing to a payment of $1000 per week for hotel bills and other charges incurred by Sellers and to the provision of first class transportation ‘from Europe to Los Angeles and return for himself, his wife, his child, her nurse and Mr. Sellers’ aide, plus an additional two transportations to be disposed of at Mr. Sellers’ discretion’), credits (‘….in first position of the entire cast, above the title, on a separate card on the screen….’), insurance, facilities and services (‘Delegate shall provide Mr. Sellers with such working facilities and amenities as are customarily enjoyed by international film personalities of the quality and reputation of Mr. Sellers, including a portable dressing room on the set with a private telephone’), approvals (including that of Blake Edwards as director, as well as major cast members and studios and locations for shooting, including those in and around Los Angeles) and public relations etc. Signed by Sellers in blue ink at the conclusion and countersigned by a witness and a representative of Delegate Productions. A rare original contract for one of the comic actor’s best films. The majority of the pages are stapled together at the upper left corner and each of the pages have two file holes to the upper edge, none of which affect the text or signatures. Some very light overall age wear, otherwise VG The American comedy film The Party (1968), which was directed by Blake Edwards and starred Peter Sellers in the role of the bungling Indian actor Hrundi V. Bakshi, is considered a comedy classic of cult status and has been described as one of Sellers’ very best films.
