BETJEMAN JOHN: (1906-1984) British Poet Laureate 1972-84. T.L.S., John Betjeman, one page, 4to, Radnor Walk, London, 27th September 1976, to Mr. Threadcold [sic], stating 'When my friend Osbert Lancaster saw the photograph, he said “Headmistress of Roedean†and then continuing in holograph ' - but that was after the Radio Times art designers had done with it!', together with a 4to sheet of white card featuring the large colour magazine image referred to by Betjeman, neatly laid down, signed by Betjeman in black ink to the lower white border of the card and dated 1976 in his hand. Also including a second T.L.S., John Betjeman, one page, oblong 8vo, Radnor Walk, London, 29th May 1978, to Mr. Threadgold, stating, in part, 'The dreadful state of affairs at Kenilworth Station I am sure would now not be allowed to happen with Peter Parker as Chairman of BR.' A large red leather bound album belonging to Tommy Trinder and containing around 300 signatures by a wide variety of famous people including William Randolph Hearst, James Agate, Beverley Nichols, Compton Mackenzie, Hannen Swaffer, Naomi Jacob, Billy Cotton, Glynis Johns, Manning Sherwin, Bob Hope ('To Tommy Trinder, Please don't be so funny - My Best, Bob Hope', 1943), Chico Marx ('To Tommy, you have at least one of the Marxes, Best of everything, Chico'), Mickey Rooney, Marilyn Maxwell, June Clyde, Jerry Colonna, Mary Brian, Larry Alder, Glenn Miller ('To Tommy, I loved it, Sincerely, Glenn Miller'), Joe Davis ('Yours till the balls stop rolling, Joe Davis') Max Wall, Richard Murdoch, Wilfred Pickles, Freddie Mills, Ted Kid Lewis, Dave Crowley, Eric Boon, Robert Newton, Claude Hulbert, Henry Cotton, Richard Tauber, Constance Cummings, Aneurin Bevan, A. The majority of pages are multiple signed (although none are back to back) and most signatories have added a warm, friendly, admiring and, in many cases, humorous inscriptions to Trinder. The album dates from 1942-58 and many of the signatures were obtained following Trinder's performances at the London Palladium and other venues. To the cover, in gilt letters, appears the comedian's most famous catchphrase, You Lucky People! A wonderful collection of signatures and a great souvenir of one of Britain's best loved comedians. Some slight age wear, otherwise VG Quick-witted and fast-talking Trinder was one of Britain's most popular stand up comedians from the 1930s - 1960s and during World War II his shows brought welcome relief during the dark days of War. Trinder also appeared in films and on television, in 1955 becoming the first compere for the new programme Sunday Night at the London Palladium. The comedian was a lifelong fan and devoted supporter of Fulham Football Club and served as Chairman of the club in the 1960's. He was awarded the CBE in 1975. The album serves as a reminder of the great affection and respect Trinder afforded from his colleagues and admirers.
