EXHIBITION QUALITY WORKING SCALE MODEL of the Second World War 'Abdiel' class Royal Naval mine layer, 'HMS Welshman (M84)' (1941-43), launched 1939, built by Hawthorne Leslie of Hebburn, 2415 tonnes, 400.6ft long with a 40ft beam, drawing 11.3ft, powered by four Admiralty three drum water tube boilers with Parsons geared steam turbine on two shafts, saw service with first mine laying squadron in the early part of the war in Scotland and Bay of Biscay, Gibraltor and Dover, followed by refit and operations in the Mediterranean escorting convoys and transporting stores to Malta, sunk whilst transporting stores and personnel in February 1943, torpedoed by Submarine U Boat U617 with loss of life. Fitted with electric motor for radio control with two propellers. Overall length of model 132cm approx. On a display stand within a fitted wooden transporting box. (B.P. 21% + VAT) Overall appearing in good condition. Rather dusty but no obvious damage. Provenance: these models by Robert Gerald Iles (1940-2019), a former British Army Officer who had always been interested in model making but did not have enough spare time whilst serving, resident in Pembrokeshire and joined the Pembrokeshire Model Sailing Yacht club where he won numerous trophies at club and national level. He also started his own business 'The Top Rig' making sails for model yachts, he then started making model ships for his own enjoyment, primarily British war ships and he took his models to modelling exhibitions all around the UK. Particularly well known in Wales.

EXHIBITION QUALITY SCALE MODEL of the Royal Navy 'Battle' class destroyer 'HMS Cadiz', so named after the Battle of Cadiz in which the French besieged the Spanish town in 1810, the seige being lifted in 1812 after the French defeat at the Battle of Salamanca, launched September 1944, built by Fairfield Ship Building & Engineering Company, joined the Fifth destroyer flotilla as part of the Home Fleet and served around the world before being sold to Pakistan in 1956, sunk during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. 3290 tonnes fully loaded, 179ft long by 40.3ft in the beam, powered by two steam turbines on two shafts with two boilers producing 50,000shp. Very well detailed model, believed fitted for radio control with electric motor onto two shafts, on a display stand within a glazed display case. 1.12m long approx. (B.P. 21% + VAT) Appearing in good condition for display or use. EXHIBITION QUALITY WORKING SCALE MODEL of the Royal Navy 'Flower' class corvette 'HMS Crocus' K49 launched June 1940, built by A & J Inglis Ltd of Glasgow, 1036 tonnes, 2005ft long with a beam of 33ft, single shaft propulsion with two fire tube Scotch boilers and one triple expansion steam engine producing 2750 horsepower. The term corvette was originally a French name for a small sailing war ship and in the Second World War the Royal Navy returned to this concept of a small escort war ship used in shipping protection roles, there were two types of vessels in this class, the later versions being slightly larger and somewhat better armed. With electric motor for radio control. 65cm long approx., on wooden stand and within blind wooden transportation box case.
