D. Smith, before becoming a Shakespearean scholar. Smith was a BBC radio producer who worked with and helped figures like Harold Pinter and Richard Burton at the outset of their careers, friends with others such as Louis MacNeice, Dylan Thomas and Bertie Rogers, and was also the inspiration for the character Guy Pringle in his wife, Olivia Manning's, Fortunes of War.
