Lot 624

Very late production 20-valve RR and believed to be the penultimate Quattro delivered to the UK.The Audi Quattro may not have been the first four-wheel drive production car (that honour belongs to the 1966 Jensen Interceptor FF), but its place in history is assured. Thanks in no small part to its enormous rallying success, the Quattro popularized all-wheel drive, and is now regarded as one of the most influential and important sports cars of the 1980s. The brainchild of Jorg Bensinger, an Audi chassis engineer, development work was started in 1977 and, three years later the finished product was released. Although the floor pan had much in common with the Audi 80 and the running gear was largely taken from an Audi 200, the Quattro used a manual centre differential lock (operated by levers next to the handbrake) to govern the 197bhp and 210lb/ft power outputs delivered by the 2.1-litre in-line five-cylinder turbocharged engine. By the time this particular car arrived in 1990, the crude cable-operated 50:50 split differential had been replaced with a much more advanced Torsen (torque sensing) diff and the engine had been uprated with double overhead camshafts and a larger 2,226cc capacity, upping power to 217bhp.Offered here is a very late production car and, indeed, it's believed to be the penultimate 20V Quattro delivered to the UK. First registered here on 17th January 1992, this lovely Quattro is superbly presented in Titan Grey with a mid-grey, half-leather interior and is one of only 295 right-hand drive examples. The Quattro has an indicated mileage of 95,821 at the time of cataloguing. During the current ownership, the Audi has been diligently maintained including an investment of over £3,000 with Audi and VW specialists, AM Cars, in March of this year, the full details of which are in the car's history file. The vendor has also recently fitted a Blaupunkt Bremen radio and the current MOT is valid until 13th June 2023. The history file is good and includes service records, detailed information of the car's life including an engine rebuild and a set of manuals. The value of 20-valve Quattros has been increasing exponentially and this super example appears attractively guided given its condition, sensible mileage, good history and the fact that it's one of the very last of these remarkable cars to arrive in the UK. Your early inspection is welcomed and encouraged to fully appreciate this very special Audi.SpecificationMake: AUDIModel: QUATTROYear: 1992Chassis Number: WAUZZZ85ZMA000252Registration Number: J680 SFATransmission: ManualEngine Number: RR001954 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 95821 MilesMake: RHDClick here for more details and images

Lot 635

A superbly restored, matching numbers example of arguably the first 'Fast Ford' that was to inspire Carol Shelby's GT350.Some say that the Ford Mustang created its own industry sector by offering an affordable sports car for the daily commute, performance to raise a smile when in the mood and enough space for the family when required. That may well have been the case, however, it mattered not as the Mustang became a worldwide success story. The second of two models, the Coupe was marketed as the hardtop version of the convertible, and is today known as the 'Notchback'. The sportier-looking Fastback Coupe was launched in early 1965, clearly defining the Mustang range and was the genesis for the line of performance Mustangs that followed. An early example of those hot (well warm) Mustangs from the production line was the 289 High Performance (Hi-Po) which was later to form the basis for Carroll Shelby's legendary GT350.Records show that just 466 1965 K-Code cars were built at Ford's Dearborn factory, many destined for Shelby's Los Angeles workshops. The example offered here is a February 19th 1965 registered Ford Mustang K-code Hi-Po refinished to the most exacting standards. It's possibly the finest early correct example available worldwide and all tuned Mustangs, even today, can trace their DNA back to this car. Purchased by our UK vendor three years ago in the United States, the restoration was carried out by the renowned Mustang expert and MCA judge, Denis Frances, of Danville Virginia. It was subject to a bare-metal, rotisserie restoration with the unusual brief to present the car exactly as it would have left the factory complete with factory overspray detail and crayon marks. Finished in Caspian Blue and with a black interior and Carlite factory tinted glass, it is totally faithful to the original specification and retains its original door plate. Its original V8 289 Hi-Po engine was rebuilt at the same time as the restoration at a cost of $7,000 by a top US engine builder. The 4-speed. "top-loader' manual gearbox was also rebuilt at the time and the full specification includes black Decor seats, 9-inch differential, front discs with dual master cylinder, date-correct seat belts, correct steel wheels and reproduced Arvinode exhausts. This Mustang really is as good as it gets, and with just 300 miles since the restoration it caught the eye of our vendor on a plinth at the Silverstone Auctions NEC Classic Motor Show in 2014. In more recent years, it has been rightly displayed on the 'Pride of Ownership' stand and the vendor has covered some 1,200 miles in the car since. Our vendor has subsequently added a spare wheel with cover, fitted a period correct radio with modern electrics, prop-shaft seals and a passenger side window regulator, with the works carried out by noted specialist Bill Shepherd Mustang at a cost of £2,358.Presented to auction with a history file that includes recent receipts, V5C, owners manuals, a book entitled 'The 289 Mustang High Performance Mustang Story'  and an odometer reading of 20,987 miles at the time of cataloguing.SpecificationMake: FORDModel: MUSTANGYear: 1965Chassis Number: 5F09K640857Registration Number: FNA 392CTransmission: ManualEngine Number: 640857 Drive Side: Left-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 20987 MilesMake: LHDInterior Colour: BlackClick here for more details and images

Lot 742

Car 459 of a limited edition of 1,000 marking the end of production of VW South Africa's version of the iconic Golf Mk1 in 2009, UK registered and just 16,598km.When Volkswagen released the original Golf in 1974, the car was an overnight success. Easy, economical to drive and inexpensive to maintain. Volkswagen South Africa started the assembly of the Golf Mk1 under licence in 1978, however, when the second generation Golf arrived in 1984, Volkswagen South Africa found themselves unable to supply the demand for a small, affordable entry-level car, as the Mk2 was bigger and somewhat more expensive than its predecessor. The most viable option for VW SA was to continue producing a variant of the Mk1, designed to fill the gap in the market for a reliable, solid, safe car for the local population. Using the same body shell as the Mk1, the 'Citi Golf' was launched in 1984 as a mildly facelifted,1.6-litre, five-door, alongside companion saloon and two-door utility models. The Citi Golf's 25 year lifespan saw hundreds of modifications, both cosmetic, to satisfy consumer demand, and mechanical to comply with safety and emission standards. Cost savings from using the Mk1 shell allowed the Citi to be better appointed than its rivals, with accessories made available over the years from the Volkswagen Group parts department. To commemorate the end of production of the Citi in 2009, the Citi Mk1 was launched. This edition was limited to just 1,000 cars, with special features that included lowered suspension, 15” alloy wheels, tinted windows, a leather sports steering wheel with airbag, and chrome foil side-stripes. The lovely example on offer here is Number 459 of those 1,000 cars and is finished in Black Magic Pearl, one of two colours available, and optioned with half-leather seats trimmed with black cloth. It was imported into the UK and registered with the DVLA on the 1st October 2019 as 'YL09 OZK, however, our vendor thought that particular registration did not quite suit the little Citi, so it now wears the current private registration, RRZ 9617, which will remain with the car.Presented to auction in exceptional condition with just 16,598 kilometres or 10,313 miles at the time of cataloguing, the service book states that the most recent service was carried out less than 435 km ago 22nd September 2021 and the car has just been issued with an advisory free MOT. An official book commemorating the Citi, unused mats still in their Volkswagen packaging, VWSA brochures, main dealer service receipts, VW heritage letter, original radio and bill of sale accompany the car.Whilst the car’s condition and rarity warrants a place in a collection, it is also eminently suitable as a daily driver for the enthusiast that loves the retro looks of a classic car but appreciates the modern enhancements fitted by the manufacturer from new. It sits within its own niche in the market and elements of the car’s features may seem incongruous at first glance but make perfect sense in context, however, you'll probably never see another and despite its humble origins, its sheer rarity means it would be welcome anywhere.SpecificationMake: VWModel: GOLFYear: 2009Chassis Number: AAVZZZ17Z9U015442Registration Number: RRZ 9617Transmission: ManualEngine Number: AFX088681 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 10313 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Leather/ClothClick here for more details and images

Lot 732

An impressive collector quality, Mk1 2-litre Transit, LWB, twin-wheel panel van from 1972.  On offer here is a very special example of one of the best selling commercial vehicles in history. Naturally, it's a Ford Transit, specifically a Mk1, LWB, twin-wheel, panel, 'custom' panel van. The vendor informs us that being a 'custom' model, it boasts features such as both left and right-hand side loading doors, up-and-over barn doors, improved seats and wood-effect dashboard trim. The odometer reads 7,071 miles, which could well be correct, and the owner believes it to be, as it was kept in a heated garage for over 40 years during the early part of its life. Once this long-term storage ended, the Transit was then bought by a previous owner, who decided to paint the van inside and out and detailed the engine whilst it was removed for the paint job at the same time. This work was carried out by the, then, owner over a long period of time to ensure that it was done properly. The previous owner mentioned to our vendor that the van has never been welded, which we can't confirm, but given its history that may well be the case. Once the respray job was complete, the Transit was taken to various shows and competitions to show off its originality with a great deal of success.Shortly after this, our vendor bought the Transit to add to his private collection of significant Fords and it's resided in his collection ever since. It's complete with lots of 'period' touches including Air Horns, period wheel trims, a Radiomobile 8-Track player complete with some cartridges, a push button radio, an Operators Manual and an old copy of the Daily Mirror.Excitingly offered at No Reserve, this is a potential 'best-of-breed' contender when you consider its originality and condition and is perhaps an unrepeatable opportunity to acquire a rather special example of what is becoming a highly collectable vehicle.SpecificationMake: FORDModel: MK1Year: 1972Chassis Number: BC05MD54245Registration Number: EVN 137LTransmission: ManualDrive Side: Right-hand DriveMake: RHDClick here for more details and images

Lot 690

Displaying an odometer reading of 22,363 miles, this magazine-featured 450 SEL is the best example we have seen and is supplied with historical main dealer service receipts, the most recent of which is dated 2nd August 2022 - Offered Without Reserve. The Mercedes-Benz W116 range was produced between 1972 and 1980 and the first model to officially carry S-Class nomenclature, the S derived from the word ‘sonderklasse’, meaning 'special class'. If the S was partnered with an E, then the car was fitted with fuel injection, or ‘einspritzung’ and if it was tailed with an L, then it was the long wheelbase model. The W116 range offered smaller engines in the line up on standard wheelbases, but it was the 450 SEL, with its 4.5-litre V8 engine and extra legroom, that filled the gap in the market between the expensively ostentatious Silver Shadow and the cheaper, but thirsty V12 Daimler. Performance was comparable and the build quality set an industry benchmark, whilst the three-pronged star remained aspirational for a new generation. Produced between 1973 and 1980 the 450 SEL was the third most popular W116 model with 59,578 cars sold.As ever with a popular car, very few remain today in this condition, rarer still as a right-hand drive car, and naturally UK-supplied cars have faired the worst due to our weather. Cars of this era in this condition are rare but occasionally available, only found however when the first owner and subsequent custodians have cherished it. As such, this UK-supplied 450 SEL in Silver Blue metallic with dark blue velour interior is a testament to the car’s first owner, who took delivery on 1st September 1979. For whatever reason, he sold the car to a wealthy pub landlord in Bristol, William Mace in November 1979 and he kept it a bit longer, until 2005 in fact, as evidenced in the original registration documents that list the three subsequent owners, with the current keeper since 2014.The car was featured in the June 2006 edition of Classics Monthly, copy included, and the odometer reading was 13,608 miles. It sits on the correct set of 14-inch ‘Bundt’ alloy wheels and is shod in Michelin XWX tyres. Factory features include self-levelling suspension, an electric sunroof, climate control, electric windows and a period-appropriate Hitachi radio cassette player. The condition is commensurate with the odometer reading of 22,263 miles and the history file includes historic service receipts, previous MOTs and owner’s manuals. The car was serviced at a Mercedes-Benz main dealer on 2nd August 2022 and the MOT is valid until 1st August 2023.Quite simply one of the finest examples we have seen.SpecificationMake: MERCEDES-BENZModel: 450Year: 1979Chassis Number: 11603322093886Registration Number: XTC 494VTransmission: AutomaticEngine Number: 11798622049879 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 22363 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Blue VelourClick here for more details and images
