HUGHES HOWARD: (1905-1976) American Business Tycoon, Philanthropist & Aviator. A rare Air Mail cover issued for Howard Hughes and the New York World's Fair of 1939 individually signed by Hughes and the four crew members of his Around the World record breaking flight upon which the cover was flown, Thomas Thurlow (Navigator), Harry Connor (Navigator), Richard Stoddart (Radio Engineer) and Edward Lund (Flight Engineer). All have signed in dark fountain pen inks with their names alone to clear areas. The cover is addressed to Earl Daley of the Hughes Aircraft Company in Hollywood and bears several cachets and postage stamps tracking the flight, including two US postage stamps post marked at New York on 10th July 1938 (day of departure) and 14th July 1938 (day of return), a French postage stamp post marked 11th July 1938 and a Russian postage stamp post marked at Moscow on 12th July 1938. Only a small number of covers were carried on the Lockhead Super Electra piloted by Hughes on his record breaking world flight of just 91 hours and those that were were only given to people associated with the flight; furthermore an even smaller number of the covers were signed by Hughes and his crew. The present example was apparently previously owned by Nadine Henley, secretary to Hughes. VG

Photograph by James Kollar of Radio City, New York. Signed in blue ink to a clear area of the background with a lengthy inscription, 'To Arlene and George, The Greatest Sister and Brother act in show business - It was great working with you. Love & hugs, Max Baer' and dated 1947 in his hand. Baer's signature is a little light at the conclusion. VG
