Churchill (Sir Winston Spencer) My Early Life, A Roving Commission, second impression, presentation copy signed by the author on title, frontispiece, plates and maps, occasional foxing, original cloth, spine faded, 8vo, 1930.⁂ The presentation inscription reads "Inscribed for H.W. Thompson by Winston S. Churchill". Although written on the title-page, which is quite unusual for Churchill inscriptions, the recipient was the son of Churchill's long-serving personal body-guard Walter H. Thompson. Writing for Finest Hour, the online Churchill magazine, H.W. Thompson clarifies the events of his father's supposed suicide attempt: "The shooting incident referred to in Finest Hour 111 occurred during the war, in the flat that my father used as a resting place when he was not on duty. When getting up to answer a telephone call from Downing Street, his revolver became dislodged from its holster. My father caught the revolver with his ankle, and as he did the revolver fired. The bullet entered his right ankle and travelled the full length of his leg, flattening into a disc when it hit his pelvis and causing a very severe wound. It was found that the accident was due to a faulty safety catch on the revolver."Lord Haw Haw" (William Joyce), the German radio propaganda broadcaster, inferred in his evening broadcast from Germany that Mr. Churchill's bodyguard had attempted to commit suicide. Clearly this was not the case; if it were, no doubt he would have aimed a little higher!" (www.winstonchurchill.org/publications/finest-hour/finest-hour-119)

Captain Michael (Micky) Burn MC Escape from Colditz signed cover PM Douglas Isle of Man 8th May 2001 War Memorial VE Day. Following his capture Burn was first sent to Marlag und Milag Nord, a naval POW camp that was the destination of all Charioteers prior to the separation of Commando and Royal Navy personnel. He was then incarcerated in Spangenberg Castle, Oflag IX-A/H, where he began giving lectures to fellow POWs before being sent to Colditz Castle, Oflag IV-C. There, using shorthand learnt for his previous employment in journalism, Burn acted as scribe to Colditz's secret radio operator, Lieutenant-Colonel Jimmy Yule. On liberation, Burn sent dispatches to The Times about what had gone on in Colditz, published in the newspaper on 19 and 21 April 1945. [4] Burn had written a novel during his stay, which was published as Yes, Farewell in 1946. While at Colditz, Burn had received a Red Cross parcel from an old Dutch acquaintance, Ella van Heemstra. After his release from Colditz, Burn responded by sending packages with food and cigarettes to van Heemstra. The food helped the malnourished van Heemstra and her daughter, Audrey Hepburn, survive the hardships following the end of the war. Van Heemstra could also sell the cigarettes for penicillin on the black market to treat the seriously ill Hepburn, perhaps saving her life. Good Condition. All signed items come with our certificate of authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £3.99, EU from £5.99, Rest of World from £7.95

Lot 589

General Heinz Guderian signed 6 x 4 vintage Hoffman WW2 postcard in uniform. German general during the Nazi era. An advocate of the blitzkrieg doctrine, he successfully led Panzer (armoured) units during the Invasion of Poland, the Battle of France, and Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union. Guderian had developed motorized tactics in the pre-war army, while keeping himself well-educated about armoured formations in other armies. In particular, he implemented the use of radio communication between tank crews and devised shock tactics that proved highly effective. In May 1940, he commanded the Panzer divisions that overwhelmed the French defences at Sedan, France, leading to the surrender of France a month later. After the German defeat at the Battle of Moscow in December 1941 he was transferred to reserve. After the defeat at Stalingrad in early 1943, Hitler appointed him to a new position, rebuilding the Panzer forces, but he bickered with many other generals, who managed to get his duties re-allocated. He was then appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Army in July 1944, but this was largely a symbolic role since Hitler had effectively become his own Chief of Staff. Guderian was dismissed in March 1945. From 1945-48, Guderian was held in U. S. custody, but released without charge. He later served as an advisor overseeing the establishment of the military in West Germany. Guderian died in 1954. Good Condition. All signed items come with our certificate of authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £3.99, EU from £5.99, Rest of World from £7.95
