Heading: Author: Diebenkorn, Richard, et al.Title: Drawings: Dixon, Diebenkorn, Hultberg, Kuhlman, Lobdell, StillmanPlace Published: Mill Valley, CAPublisher:Eric T. LedinDate Published: [1947 or 1948]Description: 17 offset lithographs tipped to mounts, each signed in graphite on the mount or the image. Includes 3 by Richard Diebenkorn; 3 by George Stillman; 3 by Frank Lobdell; 2 by Walter Kuhlman; 4 by John Hultberg; & 2 by James Budd Dixon. Plates 28x21.5 cm (11x8½") or reverse, the mounts are 32.5x26 cm (12¾x10¼"), set loose as issued in black paper folder with printed cover label. 1 of 200 copies. First Edition. Landmark portfolio of abstract expressionist prints reproduced in offset lithography, representing some of the earliest published work by Diebenkorn, Hultberg and other influential artists in the San Francisco Bay Area in the years immediately following the Second World War. David Acton, in his recent work The Stamp of Impulse: Abstract Expressionist Prints, describes the confluence of artists and ideas which led to the publication: "In about 1948 a group of artists associated with the CSFA [California School of Fine Arts, now the San Francisco Art Institute] began meeting informally in each other's studios, mostly in Sausalito. They were James Budd Dixon, Frank Lobdell, Richard Diebenkorn, George Stillman, and Walter Kuhlman, as well as [John] Hultberg, who recalled that they all wanted to distance themselves from other artists at the school who were overly devoted to Clyfford Still... One day Lobdell gave each of his colleagues paper offset lithography plates. His friend Eric Ledin, who owned a radio and television business, had received an old electric Multilith offset press in lieu of a debt. Ledin set up the machine in the basement of his house in Mill Valley, and as he taught himself to operate it, his friend Lobdell drew on a few aluminum and paper plates. Then he invited his colleagues to participate. Each of the six artists drew two or three plates, which were printed in Ledin's basement over eight days. They completed seventeen prints in editions of 200 and compiled them in an album, contained in a black paper envelope with a lithographed label. The artists offered the portfolios for sale at some of their exhibitions and in the CSFA bookstore at a cost of one dollar. In the end, the proceeds were just enough to buy a case of scotch and provided a rousing party." Portfolio with wear and fading, split nearly completely along the spine fold; slight marginal darkening to some of the mounts, two mounts with short closed tears at the top, a few of the plates neatly detached from the mount, else near fine, very scarce.
