MURDOCH IRIS: (1919-1999) Irish-born Writer and Philosopher. A.L.S., Iris, two pages, oblong 8vo, Steeple Aston, Oxford, n.d., to Olivia [Manning] (‘Olivia dear’). Murdoch thanks her correspondent for their card and continues ‘We wd. love to see you, and to see Reggie, but it looks as if we shall be away in the west country during that bit of May’, further explaining ‘John has a sabbatical term – as a result of which he can do no work’ and commenting ‘John is dying to meet you again! (Ditto of course.) But I don’t think we can make London just then’. Together with a second A.L.S., Iris, two pages, 8vo, Steeple Aston, Oxford, 19th September n.y., to Olivia [Manning]. Murdoch informs her correspondent ‘I wd. certainly like to go on an Arts Council jaunt with you & Francis King! The dates wd. need some organising though – it wd. have to be in university term time, & I already have some appointments next spring.’. Also including J. G. Farrell (1935-1979) English-born Irish Novelist. A.L.S., Jim, two pages, 8vo, Egerton Gardens, London, 22nd August 1977, to Olivia [Manning]. Farrell announces ‘I’m now deep in The Danger Tree and am having the utmost difficulty in putting it down for long enough to scramble a meal together, let alone do any work of my own’ and continues ‘I expected it to be good but it turns out to be marvellous. Roll on the rest of the second trilogy. There’s no one to beat you for getting the feel of a time and a place….and your British officials and cultural hangers-on are incomparable. I’m also lost in admiration of the way you have done the military bits. I fear that mine will look very unconvincing by comparison’. Annotated in another hand beneath Farrell’s signature. Three letters of good association including a rare letter by Farrell owing to his tragic and untimely death at the age of 44. Some staining and age wear to each of the letters, only very slightly affecting some parts of the text, but not the signatures. FR to G, 3 Olivia Manning (1908-1980) British Novelist, Poet, Writer and Reviewer, wife of R. D. ‘Reggie’ Smith (1914-1985) British Teacher and Lecturer, BBC Radio Producer and a possible communist spy recruited by Anthony Blunt. Murdoch, her husband the literary critic John Bayley (1925-2015), and Manning were friends, although the relationship has been described as an uneasy one owing to Manning’s insecurities and slight jealousy over the younger Murdoch’s greater success. The Danger Tree was published in 1977 as the first novel in The Levant Triolgy. The work was a critical success although Manning was personally disappointed that, yet again, one of her novels was not shortlisted for the Booker Prize.
