The Property of a Connoisseur, London PHILLIP WILLIAM MAY RI alias 'PHIL MAY' (BRITISH 1864-1903) William Henry Crump alias 'Harry Champion'  (1885-1942)  Pencil 16.5 x 10 cm (6 3/4 x 4 in) Harry Champion was best known as a music hall singer, comedian and composer. His best known recordings include Boiled Beef and Carrots (Collins & Murray) 1909; Enery the Eighth, I am (Murray & Weston) 1910 and Any Old Iron (Collins, Terry and Shepherd) 1911. He was born in Bethnal Green and made his stage debut in 1880 at the Royal Victoria Music Hall in Old Ford Road. He also founded a carriage business hiring horse drawn broughams which evolved into North London Coaches (W H Crump & Son). He worked throughout the 30's and appeared frequently on the radio.
